Those Jack in the Box "smash" patties look indistinguishable from the patties they use on all their other burgers haha. Great video as usual, Greg! Your renditions looked amazing and after all these years, I'm still super jealous of your outdoor setup 😀
Greg I got all three sizes of your smashers and I love them. Gave away the deepest one to a friend but I still use the other ones my self. You should bring them back.
You are a historian, a teacher, an artist and documentarian all rolled into one my friend! It’s always a pleasure to watch you and learn something new.
Hi Greg, it's Mike Florence and I sincerely hope your family arrangements have gone well. Just great to be watching another well researched and meticulously presented video. Your attention to getting the sauce right for many of your burgers is one of the things that sets your channel apart from the rest. Two great burgers for the price of one in this video!!! And yes, I noticed the high quality close-up photography!!! Cheers for now Greg, Mike.
Those recreation videos are great, the effort you put into it can be felt while we watch ! Agree with you about the "misleading" denomination here...Great job again Greg and thanks for the nice content.
We used to produce pattys for Jack, just the jumbo. I’m guessing they run the firmed Pattie’s thru two rollers, that will give you split edges. Good video!!!
A local food truck used the same misleading nomenclature. They advertise "smash burgers", but were smashing the patties before putting them on the flat-top when I got a burger from them
looks like a good burger. I know you're doing a copy cat but to me a good burger has a nice slice of tomato and lettuce too, lol maybe its just me. love watching your vids on both your channels. keep up the good work. and again lettuce and tomato and of course dill pickles LOL.
Cook them like a a Oklahoman onion burger, they’re better and more flavorful because they put the onions on top of the meat and then flip it over with the onions on the grill the meat above it but the bun on the top and it flavors everything with steamed onions, lots softer and a lot more tasty
hey greg! quick heads up - some of the links in your description are not working when i go to try and find the items listed. also, i would love to buy that hat youre wearing if its available. just looking out for ya. thanks for the awesome vid.
I live near Chicago - many decades ago we had a Jack In The Box in town but that closed at least 40 years ago I'm surprised to hear they're still around
Greg, a question about the stainless steel flat top. It seems less non-stick and harder to clean than the traditional cast iron type griddle. SS also doesn’t distribute heat as well as cast iron / carbon steel. What do you prefer about this style griddle? Love the content and thanks for your sharing your knowledge and recipes!
Stainless steel doesnt require super high heat because your smashies will almost always stick, even when using oil. This means you get a pretty consistent smash sear and you have room to move with adding oil and leaner mince. Cast iron, ive found you have to get your temp up decently high and you have to make sure the surface is dry before smashing, so it relies on your burger having good fat content.. also makes it harder to cook mulitple burgers. If you got a stainless steel pan, do some experimenting.. just make sure you have a solid scraper.
I find it interesting how painstakingly you recreated the boss sauce, it was the low light of the smashed Jack for me. The star really was the patty. I don't know if I'm up to dropping another eight dollars, but if I did, I'd go boss sauceless. I also liked the bubba burger comparison.
I miss the southwest Jack. think that's what it was called. It had roasted anaheim pepper on it. Got some roasted anaheim pepper in the freezer waiting for burger day. Misleading ads...give me the Spock eyebrow. But they had to call it something.
I agree with you Greg, it is misleading. They just want to get on the "smashed burger" bandwagon. These two burgers you just made looked really good, I'm sure the ones from Jack in the Box are no way near as good.
I don’t think it’s a matter of controversy, I think it’s all fact. I agree, homemade is generally better and in my opinion, that does not look like a smash burger. Good job with this one.
I agree! A true smash burger is my favorite! To call a burger a smash burger that isn't actually a smash burger is misleading. I've wanted to open a place called "Smash Burgers" for a few years. Every burger on the menu would be a smash burger. There is probably already a place like that, since everything has already been thought of (haha). And, financially, I can't do it. But, if such a place existed near me I would patronize it regularly!
I had it when they 1st released it last year, I'm assuming nothing has changed. It's not a Smashed burger, at all. I never saw the commercial, but the logo for it shows the Jack head looking drunk, so they were going for smashed like drunk? I don't know, but it was decent, pretty good for a chain. If I had tried it not knowing the name, I would have never known it was called a smashed burger. And I hate Mustard so I'm distressed to find out the sauce has it in it lol. I don't remember liking or not liking the sauce, I guess I need to go try it again before it gets pulled.
Perhaps, just perhaps, the red pieces in the relish are pimentos pieces. A thot. So many burgers look alike and have 1000 island "special" sauce. One knows when they get an exceptional burger (it's the meat!!!). Fun video up to usual standard for BB. Thanks.
We lived down in El Centro when I was a kid then up to Monterey later on. Still wish they would bring back the old Mayo Onion sauce. The copy cats dont do it justice. I think because they used a soybean based sauce. My buddy and I got a job at a Jack in the Box back in 1995 here in Washington state. We both hated it.
Sup Greg, great sauce, reminds me of a famous sauce but cant think? Thought like yum yum but🦧, been to a jack in box in Nashville, had an ultimate bacon burger? So good, then had a butter burger? Good, went 3 days in row, but over smashburgers, if do it do right, pre smashed is like McDonald's puck! You know real smashburger effect is cooking in own fat throughout 👍, id still eat it, just cant have bacon🧟, great job, love how you research everything 👍. Happy Easter to you and your family 🐇, haven't grilled rabbit in about 10yrs but🎉. Tyvm tc 🍔 P.S. i didnt mean to single out McDonald's for flat pucks, they do a decent wuater pounder but still pre smashed/formed, but still its not pre cooked either, make sense? 😂🤣
I smash my "smash" burgers between parchment paper also. Then slap on the flat grill. It's a "smash burger"!!! The real idea is to get the patty thin and then cook it super hot to crisp up the patty. The patties you smashed between parchment are wayyy to thick! Also, since the patties are to thick, the ratio to crispy to the beef is not correct.for a smash burger. I totally agree with your view of Jack In the Box regarding, better than McDonalds but below In N Out. I grew up in San Diego and love The Box!
I’ve been going to JnB for my whole life. It’s just not really good anymore 😢. Of Course your Burgers are Absolutely Amazing ✅🙏. Thank You So Much Greg 😊. I just copied a Carls Jr. Western Bacon Cheeseburger 🍔. Excellent. $3.00 at home compared to $9.00. 😂😂. Cheers 🥂
Smash Jacks are not smashed burgers. compared to In&Out which actually are smashed, A 3x3 In&Out costs about the same as a Smash Jack single, Google AI describes the In&Out smash technique for the documentarians, freshly smashed to order, not preformed like the Jsck! The 3x3 gives you 6 grilled sides (might weigh more than 1/4 lb) vs just 2 for the single Jack. I get extra sauce packets.
Ballistic Burgers: You should have swapped out the ketchup for a spicy barbecue sauce that isn't very sweet. It would have made it better. You also should have left the mustard out. I absolutely hate ketchup, mustard, pickles, and relish on hamburgers in any form. I'm guessing that the goal in this video is to make a burger exactly like that one that Jack in the Box sells. I still say the very best burger is a triple BLT Burger with mayo and onions (yellow onions only). Triple meaning three patties and two slices of pepper jack cheese, or sharp cheddar cheese.
Haha, Word Salad is something else, but that was funny. NOT a Smash Burger. Too many places are using the wording for a Pressed Burger. Good work, Sir.
Mcdonalds gets a bad wrap, their QP in the US with fresh beef made to order is better than any fast food burger I can think of besides InNOut, Culvers and Freddies. Hardies/Carl's are especially terrible, they are just like BK, frozen patties run through a conveyor belt with an acrid smoke flavour.
Great video as usual, thanks Greg. But I don't know why you don't add any MSG to any of your burgers, sauces, toppings, etc., you know they do. I thinks it's safe for you to do so, it's not a racist thing anymore. And I know there is already a lot of umami in there but they still do.
They are being intentionally misleading! JITB abandoned Chicagoland in 1980, their nearest restaurant to us (now) is in Southern Illinois… Their tacos were the ultimate late night drunk junk food back in the 70’s, Cheers!
It's funny, years ago (YEARS AGO) I used to work concerts. I'd get off work very late, and would hit Jack's for two tacos on the way home. To this day, if I'm driving home from a late event or something, I crave Jack in the Box tacos. LOL! Thanks for watching!
"Homemade is better ..." I was a big fan of the JITB Bacon Double Cheeseburger back in the 90s but I got really turned off when several in a row ... rubbery, undercooked bacon. Disgusting. As for using the term "smash" burgers, I'm not surprised. How many pizza chains use the term "New York Style" pizza, you order it and wonder why the claim it's NY style?
Was that 80/20 ground beef that you used Greg? A "real" smashburger? - Totally NOT! Who knows what went into those patties (flavors, fillers, spices) in the factory they were pre-formed in? We all know how popular the real smash burgers are among buger fans - It was only a matter of time for a chain to try and "cash-in" on them. I agree they both look like great burgers, just not actual smash burgers. - Cheers!

One of my fav things about Greg is he deep dives into these recipes .

You are a historian, a teacher, an artist and documentarian all rolled into one my friend! It’s always a pleasure to watch you and learn something new.
I work at Jack in the box and i can tell you that the double smash jack is a premium sandwich. the meat comes pre smashed and its a premium patty
I dug out my burger press i got from you. Now im cooking smashed burgers. Grew up in San Diego and Jack in the box!❤

you should try to recreate the Diablo burger from Carls Jr. @@BallisticBurgers
The lav mic pointed straight down at the petunias to hear what they have to say about the smashburgers is sending me 🤣
Those recreation videos are great, the effort you put into it can be felt while we watch ! Agree with you about the "misleading" denomination here...Great job again Greg and thanks for the nice content.
I like it! J in the B was never my favorite but also reliable for a greasy messy burger. Greg, yours looked killer!
Thanks for showing how you reproduce the sauce. 👍🏻
Turmeric would give you more of that orange color

Could you tell us one more time how disappointed you are that they’re calling it a smash burger 😂😂😂. Love this channel
I loved how you had Jack’s commercial in your video. Thanks for the great video.
What kind of oil do you use on the flat top or like in general ?

I have one of your old SS Smashers ✅❤️. It’s awesome 😎 Thank You So Much 😊 Greg 🤘Rock n Roll
Ok I have to ask... where did you get those smashers, cause those puppies look nice and heavy duty??
possibly msg added to enhance the flavour?
Good lookin burger Greg! Haven’t had Jack in The Box in some time. Think I’ll give yours a go, thanks brother!
Another great looking burger. Cheers, Greg! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️🍔

Holten beef has a frozen smashburger in our freezer section here, it’s a really good burger for being frozen

I agree with you Greg, it is misleading. They just want to get on the "smashed burger" bandwagon. These two burgers you just made looked really good, I'm sure the ones from Jack in the Box are no way near as good.
Adding beef flavor is a interesting concept... 👀🤔👍
I wish I had done a third burger with a little broth added.
You still got some nice malliard reaction on them like smash burgers.
I don’t think it’s a matter of controversy, I think it’s all fact. I agree, homemade is generally better and in my opinion, that does not look like a smash burger. Good job with this one.
Can you believe that the grocery store was wiped out of hamburger and hotdog buns on Good Friday.😢
I had to settle for Texas toast.
all i know in B-Town {Bakersfield} it was unavailable,
Im glad you spent your money on that burger 😅 . So we don't have to. 👍🏻
Your burger looks great 👍🏻.
I think I'll stick to making smash burgers at home. There is a Smashburger store local here in Boise, Idaho, but they are outrageously expensive.

The salvation burger you did a video on used a tortilla press before grilling yet you had no problem calling that a smash burger.

Greg, half a teaspoon of cayenne is encroaching on Chef John territory! Don't be abashed about calling out trickery, false advertising, or fraud!
When it tastes good eat it. Most (if not all) commercial joints add something to tickle your tastebuds just so you buy more.
