Ernie, thank you very much for the wonderful video you shot of Naval Station Tresure Islang. I was stationed there from 1992 to 1994 in the Post Office. I remember all the housing there and the Navy exchange like it was yesterday (fond memories). I think the most shocking thing is the that the guard booth is a coffee shop now. Still is was nice to see the Island again. Thanks a bunches

I went to ET school there in 1958/59. As a seaman I had no way to get around the island but walk and never did that. Wish there was some information as to where all of this was in relation to the old barracks and school buildings. You mention a "fire" would that have been when the hobby shop burned in the fall of 1958??
I remember night watches on the western side where the "special circuits" school was located. Those were good times - when I was young!
The radioactive materials had come from decommissioned ships after WWII, strange they never thought or talked (??) about the hazards in those days.
Thanks for a walk down memory lane - even if I never saw this part of the island. lol

I lived at 1323F Westside Drive from 74-78. My house was in the worst contaminated area and it is the one closest to the camera at 9:06. My room was the one to the right on the 2nd floor. It's the first house next to the fence. I went to the same school as you. It was hard making out the landmarks but I do remember the playground. I found out a few years ago about the contamination. Really unhappy about the whole situation there. I don't think anyone should live on the island anymore.

This is amazing! I lived @ 1308 Gateview Ave from about 1990 till 1994! I can't believe there was radioactive material around where I played and had been!! I'm planning a trip to the SF area sometime!!

I used to live at 1253-A Exposition Dr between 1990-1994. I went to T.I. Elementary for 5th grade before going to Everett. Funny how some things never change. Even knowing the base was selected for closure, they still spent money re-siding all the housing units, lol. I remember they had just resurfaced the playground, and it was so nice rollerskating there. Lots of kids played in the schoolyard even during summer and weekends. I remember busing into SF and seeing just a white wall of fog.

I was a kid then but I have many great memories of the place. What could beat having the ocean as your backyard? As far as I know I haven't had any problems steming from living above radioactive materials and my mom didn't give me the fluoride water. For whatever reason.

wow. i once live there from the late 70's to 88. i attended the elementary there too. and yes, the yard was green. that infamous track you mentioned was where i used to race on. but what got my attention was the teacher you mentioned. 'Mr. Ryan'. Not sure if he was the same one, but I had a teacher there by that name when i was in the 6th grade. Mr. Hansen was my 5th grade teacher. where the hazardous dump is, the kick ball court was there. thanks for bringing back the memories. i had a lot of great memories there, especially on YBI.

During my 22 year Navy career, I spent a lot of those years on TI. 54 weeks of Electronics Class A School 1966-67. 48 weeks of Advanced Electronics Class B School 1968-69. Instructor Duty at Advanced Electronics Class B School 1969-73. ADCOP Program 1973-75. I lived at 1224F Bayside Dr for 7 years, 1968-75. To this day my daughter, who was born while on TI, has had health problems most likely from the buried radioactive material in the housing area.

We lived on TI from 1991-1995 1203 B Bayside Drive, my eldest son who is now almost 25 years old attended the elementary school. This was a fantastic place to live back then, and what a view!! I remember walking around the island on the road that is closed. Back then there were still statues from the 1939 world's fair that were kept behind a closed fence by the marina. I have such great memories! Thank you for sharing!! Do you have anymore pics or videos?

I attended "A" school there in 1991, and have fond memories of TI.
We caught small sharks while fishing off of a small pier on the north side of the island, and enjoyed the small skate park that MWR had installed...next to the brig, if I remember correctly. It was always a joke with a shipmate of mine that everywhere else, skateboarding was a crime, and yet the Master-at-Arms would wave at us while we skated there.
    Thanks for posting this!

It wasn't easy walking around the island and seeing all the decay. What was even harder was seeing little children, just a bit younger than I was when I lived there, running around and playing and breathing in who knows what. The house I lived in was built right on top of a radioactive decontamination training area.

I was stationed on T.I. in the early 90's. I was one of the Gate Guards and was in Honor Guard. I will go ahead and say...I was the one that smiled....all the time on gate duty! I loved what I did. How could you not, with the view I saw every time I stood watch! That job was long, monotonous and a killer on the feet but If I made your day, then right on! I also lived on T.I. at 1404F Sturgeon. Loved the Seawall, walked it daily. I have to say...I had NO IDEA there was toxic/radioactive materials buried where I was living and working! This does not make me happy! Where can I get more info about this!?

I lived there twice once 1974 to 1978 then 1983 to 1985. I helped as a kid to paint the skating rink. I saw star wars in 1977 on base and snuck into jaws the same year. I used to love fishing of the pier on the Oakland side the one on the san Francisco side was just too cold. Did you realize there was a prison under the other part of the island. I've been in it. It's all blocked off I had to climb in a window you could see from the marina side. It went down at least 7 floors I was to scared to go down any farther being only in fith grade. First house was 1212 mariner drive second was gateway ct I think 2637.

      P. Castillo. The prison is on YBI island. Bunch of me friends went many floors down. And yep ,started to get spooky. Being in the 6th grade. I also did a lot of fishing. The piers are not there anymore
My dad was lucky to get housing there on TI. We started out living at Hunters Point navy base. Our house was at the fence line near the ghetto. That was rough.......
Played little league baseball up to Pony league. Knew all the names from the Oakland As,,, and S.F. Giants.

Sad to see the state that the island is in. I went to the school from k-2nd grade (77-80). I remember the painted line that separated the two playground yards...you were not supposed to cross that line! We lived at 1312D Gateview Ave. Memories....Thanks Ernie

I was there from 88-90 and from 94-96. It sure saddens me on how well they have taken care of this base. Seeing all the toxic waste and stuff, I see a few people living there, and they have a pizza parlor there. I sure hope no one got sick there living on this island which has gone to hell in a hand basket. Remember the Love Canal?

I was stationed there for my DC "A" school in the Spring of 1992. At 19, I was in awe of the island and the surrounding areas. Other than being locked on base during the Rodney King riots, it remains one of my favorite places I've visited. In between some of my bucket list travels I plan on going back to sight see with a more mature set of eyes. Lol

With the rising ocean level and possibilities of major earthquakes, I don't think the island is stable enough to have permanent dwellings. When I was on the island, I noticed that the water was a lot higher than I remember. High winds could have sent waves crashing onto the perimeter road.

When I was there in 1984 as a third class Ordnance man, during the height of the Urban Cowboy craze. I went to one of the clubs there on base, and drank a lot of Michelob bear. It woke me from my sleep at 5:00 AM. I was sick as a dog for three days. I haven't touched a bear since, lol. I still have my boots and Urban Cowboy hat with all of the feathers on it, lol.

Even in 1983 & 1984, as a 4 yr old kid, this place was fk'n scary. It felt safer playing out in the front yard than it did in the back (Alcatraz & the Bay)... and that fenced off gravel road (being right there and all) with all those dump trucks that used to run on it. A Nazi concentration camp would've provided more warmth than this barren, windy, cold and old, run-down shithole.

ANOTHER COMMENT: I just remembered MR.RYAN!! He actually taught Science. Every week, we go to Science lab. Do you remember he toss quarter at you, if you get the correct answer from his questions? There was also a kickball court in the corners of the annex playground! Fun times living as a kid on Treasure Island.

    • @erniesbudolab
      @erniesbudolab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

lcirej71 Mr. Ryan was my teacher in 1979. You may have had him later when he had more freedom to teach the way he wanted. From what I can tell from other people's accounts, he mellowed out a lot. He was a fun teacher, but he was also very strict. The most valuable lesson he taught me was the importance of laughter.

Too bad that they couldn't restore it back to the days when it was a truly wonderful amusement park, for with Playland At The Beach long since out of business the Bay Area has no amusement park that I know of even though they usually draw big crowds. What a shame. Just think how magnificent it would look at night instead of all that land going to unimaginative housing - Yuck!
