  • This video is a how-to video about adjusting flute keys. Before you adjust, you need to level the pads, seat the pads (if needed), and then you can adjust the keys. After adjusting, you need to regulate the keys. The video on regulating flute keys should be published on Monday.
    The videos mentioned in this video are in my playlist "Replacing Flute Pads". Here is the link to the playlist:

    thanks! my friend gave me her old flute and she said she was afraid she had bent the f sharp key, but it turns out it was just misaligned! all I had to do was tighten one screw and the keys were all adjusted and regulated properly :)

    Helpful information and good demonstrations. Should also mention the use of a leak light to check for full pad closure and correct adjustment between keys. Thank you for your contributions!

    Hi, may thanks for the complete guide (with the other videos).
    Fabulous! I spent 3 days to repad my old flute and obtain a good sound now.
    Without your videos, I think I never got it done.
    A tip:instead of using flattened ear Qtips, I used a strip of synthetic chamois.
    Works well!

    I've had this one problem with all three of my flutes, and I haven't had a clue how to fix it because there weren't any tuning screws between the two buttons (the F key and the Bflat key). It's even a problem with both of my old school's flutes. I'll be careful about it, but I can't wait to start fixing them!

    I'm repairing a flute that doesn't have adjustment screws on all the touch pieces, which makes things more difficult. I assume that in this case I'll need to get the touch pieces without screws closing well then adjust those with screws to match. I'll be searching out other videos for clues!
    I'm also battling with sticking rods between pinned keys, and some keys moving with unconnected keys, so that will be my next job. I have found the video for that.

    Thx for the videos! My flute got a little bit harder to play so I was trying to adjust it in the past few days. There was a moment that it sounded really great but then I did something (which I had no idea what I've done) and my high D couldn't sound. Really frustrated to get it fixed today as everything looked right to me. Do you have any clue about solving this problem?

    • @tpark89
      @tpark89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every pad has to seal perfectly all around the tone hole individually before you adjust/ regulate. Check with feeler gauge, especially near the top of the instrument (closer to the HJ).

  • @Neuro_Spicy887
    @Neuro_Spicy887 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi there. If the feeler gauge fits under a closed pad, does it mean the screw needs more adjustment to eliminate the space for the feeler gauge?

    Hello thank you so much for the informative video. Unfortunately my flute fell down and the G key (the outside one) got bend and when i press down the F key of the body it not only closes the Bflat key but also the A key. this is a big problem because it makes me unable to play the Bflat.. The A key closes too now.. Do you know how i can fix it ? is it also fixable with the screws or is there another issue with the flute?
    Many thanks in advance !

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it took me so long to answer you. My first guess is the spring came off of the A key. Check under that key to see if the spring is pushing on the spring cradle. My second guess is the rod inside of the A and Bb keys is bent causing the A key to be stuck. I hope this helps.

    Hey so I’ve been playing for 5 year and my first 2 keys on my flute won’t stay up not like they are sticky but loose and I made sure my screw isn’t loose and cleaned everything around it but I distill don’t know what’s wrong

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      My first guess is that one or two springs came unhooked from the spring cradle(s). Take a look under the key and see if there is a spring that is not hooked on the little piece of metal that is hanging down from the key.
      I hope this helps.

    Can you do the foot joint low c? It has an airleak in the back when i press the keys

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First you need to make sure the pads are level. Then you can adjust the Low C key by carefully bending the touch piece on the C# key up or down as needed.
      I hope this helps.

    THe F key to Bb hole can only be adjusted by brute forcing the lever? no screw?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are only a few manufacturers that use an adjustment screw there. However, it does not take a lot of force because the metal is very thin and soft in that spot.

    I have a question my g and a keys fell off when I was cleaning my flute how do I put them back on?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pivot screw is at the end of the high C hinge rod. That hinge rod has probably backed its way out. Screw it in and it should work. It may work its way loose again if it already did it once though.

    When I press my F key it works fine,, but after pressing the E key then F again the E key will lower and close with the F key, almost as if the mechanism is gummy, any ideas what I can do to fix this?

      I've got this issue. The E key raises by itself fine, but if I press F, the E goes down too and doesn't come up. It also goes down with the D key. Did you solve it?

    I'd love to bring my 7 flutes to you. Anyway, my question to you is: Can one change the brass keys on a closed hole wood flute to silver plated keys?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that can be done, but it would require removing all of the pads and corks, so it would be expensive. I suggest you wait and do this when the pads go bad and it is ready for all new pads and corks.

      @@TheBrassandWoodwindShop The brass keys turned silver after one polish. They now glisten. There are no good pads on that flute. I have to replace the tenon cork at both ends of the flute. Problem is, I dont know the thickness of the cork. Is there a way to be certain? Btw. Thanks for responding. Much appreciated.

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you remove the old cork, check the thickness and replace it with cork that is a little bit thicker. you will need to sand it down to fit. I would guess it is 3/64 or 1/16 inch.
