Thanks for the mention, guys :-) I always love your discussions!
In the Heat of the Night was such a pleasant surprise - I was completely underwhelmed by the crime story, but oh the two main characters were so so good! It is a pity that Sidney Poitier did not at least get a nomination!!!
What struck me during the watch was that this movie was so groundbreaking, but somehow it is not really very much spoken about any more and plays literally no part in pop culture (via references i.e.).
Btw - this fourth son is actually a (first?) daughter.

Great movie and you all had great points that you covered. I was 11 when this came out and we were not allowed to see movies like this. We went to Disney, Doris Day, Don Knots movies. I didn't see this until I was an adult. I loved it for all the reasons you spoke of. I think it's biggest competition that year was The Graduate. This was better. Of course the Academy nominated Dr. Dolittle as well. If you want to see how bad the nominations get just watch that!!! I put In the Heat of the Night toward the top of the list. It just showed at the theaters about a month ago. We went and enjoyed it immensely.

Steiger did a great job with the subtleties his role required, not an easy task.

A Raisin In The Sun, many years and films before this one, put him on the map.
