If you bought a D810 and here for start up info- Just watch it. You will be 100% satisfied- take my word for it!! one of the best and the most clear tutorials ever- i just upgraded from D5100 to D810 and was completely at loss at this magical instrument which has been my dream from last few years- and finally got it. the best part is , i got complete control over my camera- which is so much more advanced than 5100- in like 1 hour- and thats simply amazing. I kep shooting practice shots with the video on- and i have to say- i shoot with complete control. So if you have just bought a D810 and come here- just watch this video. Totally worth it. OUTSTANDING tutorial. I've been looking to upgrade for a long time. I've always been a Canon guy, but due to a pending year long project, my old crop sensor Canon D60 just isn't going to handle my needs and I can't wait for the Canon 5D Mark IV any longer so might have to take the plunge and jump ship to Nikon... and truth be told, Nikon cameras have always been somewhat intimidating as I knew so little about them Your tutorial changed that and I feel like I have a basic understanding of the controls. Obviously a tremendous amount more to learn with this camera, but your video was a great start.

The thing about Tony's videos which makes them so useful, and such a "go to" resource, is the way he's able to seamlessly integrate his real-world experience and wealth of knowledge into his explanations of various features and technical elements of gear. As an advanced photographer, I almost never watch one of Tony's videos without taking away at least one or two really useful bits of knowledge. (Actually... Tony is part of the reason I AM an advanced photographer.) The stuff he gives away in these videos is better than many of the paid courses I've purchased, and I would highly recommend his other materials as well. He's a great resource for the entire photography community, and shares his knowledge without a hint of spin, arrogance or bias.
Superb video. I do read the manuals but this is the best overview and instruction on the D810 I have seen anywhere and keep coming back to this. Thank you Tony. Yes I might get your book!

This is REALLY good content on the Nikon D810. I also own and recommend this camera. It is a much better camera than I will ever be when it comes to photography. Very good video! I just got my D810 today, using my D7100 as a backup. Using this video and the settings I have on the D7100 I was able to quickly get the D810 configured the way I work. My favorite part of the video was the auto-iso idea as a handy way to complete the exposure triangle. Thanks again for the video!
AWESOME video - I just bought my D810 today (because you speak so highly of it in other videos) - actually making a switch from Canon with this purchase... I just now got around to watching your tutorial. It was very helpful. I'm coming from a large format film background (4X5, 8X10) after a long time out of photography. The D810 seems to fill all my needs. I just have to get a handle on the technology. Thank you again. Your video hit most of the highlights of the camera and gave a jump start in it's operations.
I was skeptical when I saw this was an hour and sixteen minutes. I definitely thought "holy hell, this is going to be really dry" but you pulled it off! I wasn't super bored, I got useful information, the camera angles you used were great so that I could follow along with my D810 as you went. I appreciated the explanation of some of the functions and how and when you might use them but also appreciated that you didn't make the video 3 hours long talking about every little thing. The areas where I wanted a little more explanation you made it easy for me to google the specific functions I would have otherwise never learned about or learned about after I needed them to take a better picture. Thanks for putting this together!

Great overview! Thanks for putting this up. I really love my D810, and this definitely explained a few things I hadn't looked up in the manual and didn't know I even needed to look up. Also, I had to double take, around 48m in, when talking about the max recording time for video, you originally say 30-minutes, then later say 30-seconds. All I heard was the 30-seconds at first and thought that couldn't be right! Thanks again!
Tony. You're the best. I just bought a D810 off one of my students, and you've saved me a couple of hours of fiddling. Of course it takes a while to develop muscle/cognitive memory for settings but that will come with time . next up is CF/SD media selection. Thanks again!

As you know, "electronic front curtain shutter" is a very cool trick, that yields substantial benefits in areas where tack sharp focus is important. Macro and Astrophotography immediately come to mind. For those that don't know, few if they watched your video and bought the camera, the mirror is there so you can look through the viewfinder, and see out the lens at the actual scene, and the aperture is fully open so you can see out the lens. When you push the shutter button, the mirror flips up, the aperture stops down, and the lens is now focusing on the sensor (and not being diverted to the magic focus phased detection array, the magic exposure array, and to the viewfinder screen. Quite a trick. Rube Goldberg like, but it works.). In Live View, like you said the mirror is always up, and you are looking at the image through the lens, as the sensor sees it, stopped up so that it's visible. You now essentially have a "mirrorless camera", but with the weak points like slow focus still present. It's essentially much simpler. The auto focus is terribly slow, and won't work at all if the light is low. But it's very accurate. You're focusing on the actual sensor that is going to capture the image. When you take a picture, the Live View goes blank, and in "Mirror Up" Mode, it also goes blank, even though the mirror is already up. It is stopping down the aperture, and I've just figured out that it's doing one additional thing. Hitting the sensor with a reset to clear out it's "pixel accumulators" (I have NO clue as to the proper vocabulary here, sorry.). From there, a "normal" camera just takes a picture. Which means the shutter opens, and closes after the shutter setting interval. With the FC, the shutter has already been opened, and the release of the reset on the sensor acts as an "electronic vibration free shutter opening." Cool trick. I think "Front Curtain Shutter" (FCS) should have been mentioned because it's so combined with "Mirror up Mode". When you have the FCS turned on (When wouldn't you Tony? Can it do harm, even if not needed?), you'll normally have the camera on a tripod, and when you're in Mirror Up Mode, the first push of the shutter button raises the mirror, the second takes the picture (Or just enter Live View, and it's already up, but you have to hit the shutter button twice anyway to use the FC. WHY? The front curtain, does everything that would ordinarily occur after the mirror is raised, AND opens the shutter, AND releases the reset on the sensor. When you hit the shutter button the second time (remotely or via timer if you''re this worried about vibration), the sensor that is cleared is now turned on to accumulate light (as if the shutter opened), but it's electronic, there is no shudder motion. When the shutter closes after the exposure interval, vibration caused by the closure isn't caught by the sensor. Even zooming in on a regular photo will reveal a slight increase in clarity with the Front Curtain. I'm sure to astrophotographers it's huge. When Mirror Up Mode is selected, two button presses are necessary to take the picture. One being to lift the mirror, the next to take the picture. Two are also necessary in Live View, but the first push doesn't raise the Mirror, it already is raised, so it does the other house keeping chores that even have to be done in view finder mode. I thought you should have mentioned it, but seeing how long it took me to explain it, never mind. I'll read your book!

Great video, Tony. Got SDP last month and it's nice to read an actual book again. Btw... trivial tip: Clicking up in menus gets to the buried items fast. E.g. Once you're in Shooting Menu, Movie Settings is just one click up.

I watched your whole video this evening and picked up several great ideas. like assigning the record button to ISO. Also, I agree with you on the Nikon flashes. They do take abuse if you happen to have one fall out of your hand or vest but you can buy a nice Yongnuo for the about the same as it cost to repair one of my Nikon SB910's that I bought when I didn't know any better.

This is REALLY good content on the Nikon D810. I also own and recommend this camera. It is a much better camera than I will ever be when it comes to photography. Tony, your gentle style is much appreciated. There are some real ass-hats doing reviews / explanation(s) of gear on YT, but you, sir, are head and shoulders above all the other wanna-be's. Very good video! I just got my D810 today, using my D7100 as a backup. Using this video and the settings I have on the D7100 I was able to quickly get the D810 configured the way I work. My favorite part of the video was the auto-iso idea as a handy way to complete the exposure triangle.

I was skeptical when I saw this was an hour and sixteen minutes. I definitely thought "holy hell, this is going to be really dry" but you pulled it off! I wasn't super bored, I got useful information, the camera angles you used were great so that I could follow along with my D810 as you went. I appreciated the explanation of some of the functions and how and when you might use them but also appreciated that you didn't make the video 3 hours long talking about every little thing. The areas where I wanted a little more explanation you made it easy for me to google the specific functions I would have otherwise never learned about or learned about after I needed them to take a better picture. Thanks for putting this together!

Great overview! Thanks for putting this up. I really love my D810, and this definitely explained a few things I hadn't looked up in the manual and didn't know I even needed to look up.
Also, I had to double take, around 48m in, when talking about the max recording time for video, you originally say 30-minutes, then later say 30-seconds. All I heard was the 30-seconds at first and thought that couldn't be right!

As you know, "electronic front curtain shutter" is a very cool trick, that yields substantial benefits in areas where tack sharp focus is important. Macro and Astrophotography immediately come to mind.
For those that don't know, few if they watched your video and bought the camera, the mirror is there so you can look through the viewfinder, and see out the lens at the actual scene, and the aperture is fully open so you can see out the lens. When you push the shutter button, the mirror flips up, the aperture stops down, and the lens is now focusing on the sensor (and not being diverted to the magic focus phased detection array, the magic exposure array, and to the viewfinder screen. Quite a trick. Rube Goldberg like, but it works.).
In Live View, like you said the mirror is always up, and you are looking at the image through the lens, as the sensor sees it, stopped up so that it's visible. You now essentially have a "mirrorless camera", but with the weak points like slow focus still present. It's essentially much simpler. The auto focus is terribly slow, and won't work at all if the light is low. But it's very accurate. You're focusing on the actual sensor that is going to capture the image. When you take a picture, the Live View goes blank, and in "Mirror Up" Mode, it also goes blank, even though the mirror is already up. It is stopping down the aperture, and I've just figured out that it's doing one additional thing. Hitting the sensor with a reset to clear out it's "pixel accumulators" (I have NO clue as to the proper vocabulary here, sorry.). From there, a "normal" camera just takes a picture. Which means the shutter opens, and closes after the shutter setting interval. With the FC, the shutter has already been opened, and the release of the reset on the sensor acts as an "electronic vibration free shutter opening." Cool trick.
I think "Front Curtain Shutter" (FCS) should have been mentioned because it's so combined with "Mirror up Mode". When you have the FCS turned on (When wouldn't you Tony? Can it do harm, even if not needed?), you'll normally have the camera on a tripod, and when you're in Mirror Up Mode, the first push of the shutter button raises the mirror, the second takes the picture (Or just enter Live View, and it's already up, but you have to hit the shutter button twice anyway to use the FC. WHY? The front curtain, does everything that would ordinarily occur after the mirror is raised, AND opens the shutter, AND releases the reset on the sensor. When you hit the shutter button the second time (remotely or via timer if you''re this worried about vibration), the sensor that is cleared is now turned on to accumulate light (as if the shutter opened), but it's electronic, there is no shudder motion. When the shutter closes after the exposure interval, vibration caused by the closure isn't caught by the sensor. Even zooming in on a regular photo will reveal a slight increase in clarity with the Front Curtain. I'm sure to astrophotographers it's huge.
When Mirror Up Mode is selected, two button presses are necessary to take the picture. One being to lift the mirror, the next to take the picture. Two are also necessary in Live View, but the first push doesn't raise the Mirror, it already is raised, so it does the other house keeping chores that even have to be done in view finder mode. I thought you should have mentioned it, but seeing how long it took me to explain it, never mind. I'll read your book!
Jumping from D7100 to D810 i was thinking that is losing time to watch this video,i was sure that i know almost everything,guess what...I didn't...This is a MUST WATCH TUTORIAL if you have a D810 !!! Thanks Tony, I have just about worn out my D810 over the last 6 years and have studied the manual a bunch. I watched your whole video this evening and picked up several great ideas. like assigning the record button to ISO. Also, I agree with you on the Nikon flashes. They do take abuse if you happen to have one fall out of your hand or vest but you can buy a nice Yongnuo for the about the same as it cost to repair one of my Nikon SB910's that I bought when I didn't know any better.
