Less is more when battling a level scaling opponent. Nice stuff.

I think if you just take spinach early, you'd generally be fine rather than leaving it late and searching for it without the map.

Not necessarily. He had several runs where spinach was fully leveled, but he was getting overrun late in the stage cause he couldn't kill enemies quickly enough.

It is weird how hard it starts, and how easy it gets once you unlock sammy the infinite gold worm.
Last time I played my Sammy got 250M gold in 15 minutes, and I stopped putting eggs on him at 14.5k for fear of crashing the game. I can't pick up chests because of the cat eye craziness

so what's the reason hollow heart was so inconsistently in level ups, is there some kind of first run mechanic I'm not remembering?

he hadn't unlocked it yet, the only reason it was available is because he picked it up from the map. Items picked up while you don't have them unlocked yet act weird, only showing up sometimes even if they should show up every time; for some reason Vandalier is the same way even if you do unlock it.

@@SheffiTB Ah, what a weird interaction. I guess it's not really a priority for them to "fix" because it's an uncommon occurrence
