      At the rate mice reproduce, he isn't killing them fast enough. I can see him doing pest control besides demonstrating the traps. But they mate too quickly & add in that they're drawn to farms, he won't run out of test subjects any time soon.

    I think the sound of a trap going off has become something of a dinner bell to the mice, sure they might have to crawl over the corpse of their dead brother to get to the food, but that just means its safe now.

    that trap is pretty awesome how ever . were the bait is set in i seen the rat looking over the wire and grabbing the bait and setting it off. what if you made like wings on the sides above the bait spot it wont get in the way of the trap or anything but would make the rat stick its head under the wire rather then over it

    I noticed that the top leading edge, where the toggle sets into a carved slot broke off at its thinnest point, making it impossible to set the toggle in place.

    If you put a "roof" on that trigger mechanism right above the striker when it's in its primed position, then the rats would not be able to go over the striker.

    That rat was a boss. He took the bait from the top of the trap. When the trap went off he didn't even flinch. He stayed and finished his snack like a boss.

    Needs a cover on top and just a hole for the bait hook to go through and it will catch rats. That way they can't get the bait from above.

    Given that many serviceable designs of mousetrap have been devised, why do you think that so many different types exist? Other machines do not get reinvented so many times.

      I don't know. Maybe the just-right combination of a bit of evolutionary pressure, but not so much that it discourages crazy ideas, aswell as some excentrics wanting to kill mice in the most wicked way possible.

    +Shawn Woods - I see that after use a piece of wood is missing from the end of the trap armature, where the block for the kill bar suspension string would rest in the notch. Did it break, or did one of the rodents gnaw it off?

    You don't need a bigger version of it to kill rats. I'm quite confident that that trap would do it, you just have to block off access to the bait over the bail from the top. Build a shroud or housing for the trap. Set the trap up, then place the housing or shroud over the trap to cover the bail. The rats can smell the bait and put their head under the bail and over the nails where it belongs and trigger the trap the way it's supposed to work.

    If you're impressed with how technologically advanced a 1590 mousetrap is, you should check out some of the flying buttress cathedrals or astronomical clocks that predicted eclipses, that they were building 200 years prior to that.

    bro, you realize that was the renaissance, right? Da Vinci was designing tanks and flying machines a hundred years before this mouse trap.
    The middle ages gave us massive and complicated siege weaponry and steel that was both lightweight and invulnerable to weaponry, plus all of the major colleges we know today.

    Before I found your Videos Shawn, I never knew I had any interest in mouse traps. Now I love them. Also it looks like TH-cam has eased up a bit on live kill traps.

    Adding two half circles pieces of wood on the left and right of the top arm will stop the rats from getting the Bait from over the kill bar.

    The wood on mouse trap was broken where it holds the trigger mechanism at the end of the video seems like a lot of work for a trap that you can only use a couple times?

    If there was a cap on top kind of like whats on the bottom, it would close off the opening on top when the trap is set. The rats would have no choice but to go through the bottom or leave it alone. Larger is probably the better idea though.

    The trap didn't look like it was in great condition towards the end of the video. It was missing some spikes, there were a few cracks in the wooded base and the notch looked like it had been chewed off.
    I'm curious as to the endurance of this trap.
