What it's like to hike alone in Iceland | Laugavegur Trail

  • Alone in Iceland on my first solo hike. Dwarfed by the magnitude of the mountains & feeling grateful for where my legs take me on a slow-paced journey across one of the most stunning landscapes I’ve ever experienced - the Laugavegur trail.
After 4 years of full-time travel, Tania & I have been fortunate enough to have hiked some epic trails together. Most recently Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. However, Iceland was my first experience taking on this kind of adventure alone. And even though I was ill-prepared and made some rookie mistakes, I am certain that this won’t be my last solo adventure.

Hey gang! Tania here - just want to say how proud I am of Adam for capturing and editing such a beautiful film. When we go out adventuring together we work as a team to film (sharing ideas, setting up the tripod, changing lenses etc.) and to film something solo in such a way that captures the essence of the trip is a testament to Adam’s storytelling craft!
I hope you enjoy watching as much as I have and if you do please let us know & share this film with a friend who you think might appreciate our channel💛
Let us know in the comments if this is something you have ever considered doing, and if so where would you like to do it? We are always looking for new ideas on places to hike - and we need recommendation on lightweight, quality trekking gear to slowly begin to invest in.
As always, a huge thanks as always to our Patreons who’s monthly support helps us continue to make our films ✨Patreon.com/jitsintothesunset

    That backpack is a monster.
For a lightweight backpack would recommend ATOM packs (in the UK), fantastic packs, and can be really customised to fit/colour. If you can get there would recommend emailing them to visit the offices, and make sure you select the right size.
For a lightweight tent, my money is on the Durston gear, I have the X-Mid 1 (original not pro), and I love it. I am also a fan of the Big Agnes Copper Spur, this comes in a bit heavier than the X-Mid but is free standing.
There are some great TH-camrs out there who focus on lightweight backpacking.
Good luck with the hiking journey......gear buying can become addictive.

Hi Adam what you did was the first and most difficult step to go and walk. I will only advise on some things, some pieces of kit and some tips. If you walk every day you will get stronger very fast. You also get used to a backpack, after some days you will feel like flying if you are not carrying it. As a walker we did use some important things, first our Hilleberg tent. But what type of tent to use depends on your trip, are you with two or alone? This depends on the size of tent you buy and take with you. I will give some advice, some to save money! We like it a lot as we are dutch, however some tips are expensive, let's start with that. We bought several tents and only in the end our dream tent, a Hilleberg, something that is tested thoroughly and you can experience during use. We save money by buying that online, we have marktplaats and there is lots of gear there. Furthermore, while carrying a big backpack we used a walking pole, very practical and relieves your knees. Helps also in mountains to keep balance. In iceland a walking pole was not very needed, but often they are. As we are also very experienced we will not share specific tips but simply concepts.
To get less weight this is a continuous game that i played in my mind. What do i not use, and what things can be used for multiple uses? We for example only carried some bio degradable washing up liquid. We used that for hand wash clothes (sport shirts dry quickly), to wash ourselves, our hair, to shave, and of course do do washing up. Also we used Therma rest 3/4 size mats and for our feet simple light (non inflatable) isolation mattress which doubled as a seating mat. Later on when we got older we really liked the Exped inflatable mattresses. The last tip, if you want to get away simple and very special, choose a canoo route. We used a tandem kayak (prijon) and used that on Dalsland canal in Sweden but also in Friesland in the Netherlands. This was a walkers dream! We could easily bring a bottle of wine and books (this was in the time that ereaders and smartphones were not there so our enjoyment in the evenings was extremely simple)

I love solo backpacking and usually do 2 or 3 trips per year. But I started with 20kg loads too and it's no fun, especially uphill. I now only carry 10kg loads, sometimes less for a one-nighter. The Durston Xmid is a good lightweight tent at a fair price(but long waiting list) or a Lanshan2 if the budget is tight, the BRS3000 stove is 30g and works great. And a good down sleeping bag and inflatable mat. Waterproof socks are expensive but worth it for winter-type conditions(bogs and snow). And make sure to put a waterproof pack-liner in the bag, it's the only way to keep things dry! And always carry spare socks and undies for sleeping in(and for emergencies). Finally, you need trekking poles - they *really* make a difference when carrying a load (and double as your tent poles!).

I'm still not sold on trekking poles, because I'm always carrying a camera I find they get in the way. Only on extreme incline or decline have I found them useful. Maybe I need to give them another go.
Thanks for taking the time to give me all these tips! Adam :)

I find with trekking poles if I carry the camera in a peak design shoulder strap clip I can just drop the poles and let them dangle by the wrist straps and grab the camera. They are awkward if you are moving around a lot getting different angles though. But the extra stability and drive they give when carrying a big load makes them worth it for me.

And yes, doing things separately is so important. It gives us the chance to miss each other, and a new appreciation for spending time together.
We'd love to post more often, but I find film making very hard and much less fun if I try and rush it. But we're working on it! 🤓. We have been so busy filming and now we have 4 (maybe 5!) films shot, waiting to be edited, I'm excited to get stuck into them 🙂 ⛺️ 🎥 Adam

Yeah I presume you didn't have any options for rental? As soon as I saw you walking along what appeared to be a glacier with a Coleman tent I was concerned for your safety lol. Looks like a pretty rugged environment.
Off the top of my head I carry a Gossamer Gear The Two, it uses trekking poles for tent poles to save weight. A light of ultralight tents do. If you want something easier to set up, freestanding or semi freestanding, I'd get a Big Agnes, like a Copper Spur in the former case or Tiger Wall in the second. For the pack, I have a Granite Gear Crown 2. It's kind of moderate, much lighter than that Fjallraven. I'd keep away from the huge Osprey packs. They're like 4+ pounds from the pack alone. My Granite Gear is half the weight and half the price but just as durable and carries nearly the same amount.
I'd get a Thermarest camping pad, either a closed cell foam to start out (Z-lite) or if that's uncomfortable or you need more warmth, get a Neo Air X-lite. More expensive but it's super comfortable and thick.
Get a down quilt instead of a sleeping bag IMO. I'd say Enlightened Equipment or UGQ for budget. Hammock Gear also makes some budget top quilts. Keep in mind that temperature ratings aren't usually the temperature you'll be comfortable at. If you want to sleep well at 20°F, get a quilt rated for 10°F. I also carry an Enlightened Equipment synthetic "Torrid" coat I sleep in for cold weather.
Look for introductory guides on r/ultralight. You don't need to immediately jump to 10lb base weights. Just getting down under 20lbs will make your life so much better. And it's not all about spending money. A lot of ultralight is just learning to not bring things you don't need. Just don't do it all at once, especially in really remote, extreme environments, maybe leave the experimentation to summer at lower latitudes instead of in Iceland, even in Summer lol. Your cook kit actually looks not bad. It seems kind of big for an isobutane stove, but I presume it's made to take multiple fuels, which isn't a bad idea if you plan on doing a lot of winter camping. Pot might be a bit big for one person unless you regularly make stew. Maybe re-use disposable 1L water bottles instead of a big Nalgene or a metal bottle. Carry a water filter so you can afford to pack in less water. Unless that big bottle actually contains a filter (edit 13:49 Okay yeah so it does have a filter, nothing inherently wrong with that, might be worth weighing it though). 13:23 reusing containers for cold soaking is great, but in the future I'd recommend something plastic. Making a peanut butter container. Some people really like used Talenti Gelato containers.

      @JitsIntoTheSunset  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Wow, thanks so much for this! Some great advice there. Lots of food for thought. I do like the gas stove we have, I can't imagine anything much smaller than that. It's the gas that's bigger, but I guess there isn't really a way around that!?
The water bottle is a little heavy, but the fact that its a filter and bottle combo means I'm kind of happy to accept the fact that it's a little bit on the heavy side. It's also a great bottle for travel in general, it's nice to use one thing for multiple situations.
Thanks so much for taking the time to give such in dept advice, really appreciate it! 😊 ⛺️ Adam
