    This is exactly what I was looking for. My old laptop doesn't even turn on, so I needed a more brutalistic approach to ensuring my old data was gone.

    This technique will not wipe the hard drive. If you want to erase a hard drive you need a much much more powerful magnet than what is used in this video. A pull force of at least 450 pounds is needed to have any effect on a hard drive, and that kind of force is incredibly dangerous.

    ok serioulsy for wiping data and not destroying you could just format the hard drive, but its better to use a wiping software such as DBAN. you can boot on the dban cd and just type in QUICK. it will take a few hrs depending on the size of your hard drive.

    This is just to attempt to destroy the drive. If you don't actually have the magnet make contact with the patter it won't really do much. On top of that there is 0 chance that it will destroy any data on the lower platters. If you can't wipe the drive using DBAN, since the drive has failed, best bet would be to gut out the platters and then take them outside on the street and slide them around with your shoe. This is going to scuff them up pretty good.

    • @exgenica
      @exgenica หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of these drives have quite a few platters and use both sides of each platter for data (except the ones that use servo positioning tracks on at least one of the platters). You'd also have to disassemble the platter core to remove each platter and mangle them individually. Screwdriver likely won't help in disassembling the platters.

    Why does so many people say it make your drive spoil, but useless, I thought main purpose its to make a drive spoil? I have old hard drive that I want to destroy all data before throwing it away, will this method work? Thanks

  • @DalTexGuy
    @DalTexGuy ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is helpful because my mother in-law lost the charging cable to her notebook computer and we haven't been able to find a replacement. So, she gave it to me to take to the hazard recycle facility but first I removed the hard drive in case any of her banking information was still on it. I don't see her getting another laptop in the near future that the old hard drive can be installed in so the best thing to do is to just get rid it.

    o I get it, but I'd spray the platter down with the special wiping ingredient that comes in a spray can. make sure to spray on the top and bottom of platter. use the whole can to be sure its good and wiped. dry with a lent free cloth.. :P

  • @ZZsfnChannel
    @ZZsfnChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    dont waster your time opening it up. just take the screw driver and rip up the outer cable connections. takes like 5 seconds. true somebody could load that platter in another reader but not without the right tools like a dust free environment. very few peeps can do that.

If the data wiping of a *_mechanical_* HDD has got that far, and recovering the data is that important and worth the expense, then by the time the alphabet agencies are examining the media they're not using any off-the-shelf tech that remotely looks like standard hard drive software, electronics, read/write heads, etc.

    Use a punch and 3lb hammer. Set the punch on the top of the aluminum cover and drive it through with the hammer. It will shatter all the drive platters rendering them useless.
