It's just a practice. Actually in reality the concrete members resembles with rectangular and cylindrical shape. That's why these shapes are used
Sir, want to ask you a question, why shear checking is usually not considered in slab/retaining wall？ Thanks
in case of slab, due to small thickness(compair to plan dimension) shearing strain is much less, thus stress, so we ignore it.
