Nikon D810 - The Power of Imagination "The Bedroom"

  • Joe McNally takes his active imagination to a new level with a Halloween gone awry in this photo shoot. Watch Joe work through a complex lighting scenario yielding spooky fun! A little girl stays up past bedtime, reading a scary story. Then, out of the darkness of her room, a shimmery woodlands creature comes alive from her painted wall mural. What might happen next?
Thanks to an amazing crew: flawless production by Lynn DelMastro, brilliant body painter Anastasia Durasova who transformed our lovely model Tanya Sinkevica into the creature living in the wall, hair stylist Jerome Cultrera, prop stylist Katherine Hammond, and terrific mural painting by Dana Heffern. *Happy Halloween* You know when Joe thinks about a sweet little girl reading a book in her room, there has to be a twist, right? This time the twist is that the lovely mural on her wall just so happens to have come alive. Just this _one_ night. Here's the making of The Power of Imagination: The Bedroom: Nikon D810 - The Power of Imagination "The Bedroom"

Iconic picture, is what we get here. Maybe not for the general public, but it should be for every photographer. Technically, it shows a clever mix of big fat studio flash combined with speedlights. I'd argue that all the indoor light could have been done with SB-800/SB-900/SB-910 where there are Profotos - but that's just a matter of using what you already have. Just those 3 Profoto 2,400 W.s pack strobes outside mimicking moonlight at broad daylight - brilliant (I would equate that to about 96 SB-910 speedlights, btw.) The whole production is a great collaboration. Joe's modest, slightly victimy, report of how he is sailing through Scylla and Charybdis and manages to get past that - not sure that is necessary but it makes clear to outsiders that serious work was done. There is no "chance" here. Remember the noble words of Louis Pasteur "luck favors the prepared mind" (associated with accepting a 1907 Nobel prize), or Eisenhower's variant to that: "luck is where preparation meets opportunity." Here, preparation enforced the result and bad luck was really mitigated. PPPPPP: prior preparation prevents p... poor performance, fellas on an island between my neck of the woods and the US would say.

I loved this, however, PLEASE be more professional and wear a mike. It is amateur to do it with possible ambient noise. I am not being negative, just realistic. And drop the hiphop music, I almost turned if off after 5 seconds of it. otherwise awesome!

All that work and honestly it’s just a nice photo. Doesn’t wow me or that I would buy as a print and hang on my wall. Pretty sad though for all that effort from the photographer and collaborators. I’m sure they are talented but it just doesn’t work.

  • @SwitiCarma

This is a what a top professional comes up with? Stick to lighting and stay away from the fantasy. I'm amazed Nikon doesn't recoil from this depiction of a middle-aged man using a half-naked model to indulge his limited sense of expression. Anyone with a full frame camera and a $20,000 budget should be able to come up with something a lot more compelling and curious than this piece of inanity, and I mean this visually as well as lyrically. And do something about the audio recording: the absurd swishing around the voices is a devastating indictment of incompetence on set. I'd like to see what Joe can do with a single camera and no crew and a couple of flashes with a deadline to tell a story, something with some depth, not adorned with this faux Madison Avenue elaboration. Is he capable of something brilliant? Prove it.
