When I was in my 20's I wrote my grandfather a letter just letting him know how wonderful he was and how much he meant to me. A few years after he passed away his wife sent that letter back to me. It is one of my prized possessions.

The first year I was married, my sister made me a cookbook and included all of my Mom's and Mother-in-law's favorite recipes so I could make my childhood favorites and also my husband's. It was so sweet of her to reach out to both of them and put it all together. She also asked for family photos from both sides to add to it and I have to say...I use it ALL the time!

A few years ago I wanted to give my dad the gift of paying for him to adopt me. But my state (Michigan) doesn’t allow adult adoptions. So I wrote him a letter saying everything I felt. I’m 39 now and he is the man that raised me. I’ve only called him “my dad”. So the letter was explaining everything. And if you want to see a grown man cry that’s the letter to do it. It made us all cry. ♥️

I just wanted to get on here and comment about how everyone has very rough seasons like Jessie said, I myself have been through some very tough seasons in my life. There is a way put of that and it will come when you least expect it. I went from moving from Alabama to St. Louis to try and form a relationship with my mother only to find myself homeless with just what I could pack in a little 99 ford Taurus with a 2 year old daughter that was luckily with her dad. I had just enough money to get back home to Alabama, but i made it and now i own my own home and have an awesome job! I do not make a lot of money at it but the people actually care about us. That is worth way more then the big pay check. I'm not telling this story to brag, but to let someone that may read this know that seasons change and you WILL get through it and never look down on yourself for the mistakes you made to get where you are now. Lord knows i made plenty of them and will continue to make them. Keep your heads up and keep pushing forward.

    • @Shay2theT

Omg. What a wonderful story. Perseverance is so much about appreciating that you got through the rough times and not putting yourself down because of them. And I personally think that when you have struggled like that it makes you not need the finest things in life. It helps you treasure the finest moments and people instead. Thanks for sharing your comment. Wish I could give you a big hug right now. 💓

Felt your heart when you started crying! Thank you Jessica for thinking of everyone! My family had such a tragic loss this year. My cousin had triplets 7 years ago (all three girls) and we lost one of them in May (nothing COVID related) but it was so heart breaking seeing my cousin hurt, and still hurt. Losing a child is not easy and this season makes it hard. But we all love on my cousin, her husband, and the remaining sisters so hard that it helps. We cry at the thought of their loss, but the Lord is their strength and comfort.

Letters are so underrated. My mom wrote her grandmother, my great grandmother, a letter when I was just a few weeks old. It was a general life update which was mostly about her newborn (me!) My mother passed when I was 17 and my great grandmother passed a few years later. The letter was sent to me and it was the best gift I ever got! Being able to read something from my mom and hear her voice in every word was was precious and meaningful.

I love this gift guide! Every year for Christmas I gift my grandfather a letter and let him know I’ll be making him soup for the year. Once a month or so, I’ll make a big pot of soup and freeze the leftovers in individual portions for him. After my grandma passed away, he’s struggled cooking for himself as she cooked him every meal. It’s the best gift because it costs very little but shows a huge amount of love and care. It means so much to him to know he’ll have an easy hot meal a few times a week. And it doubles as a gift for my mother who does so much to care for him. Knowing that he has these meals covered offers her a break and some peace of mind.

    My Dearest Jessica,
What a light you shine in this divisive, angry, cold world we are experiencing! I love your compassion, your empathy, and your babyheartedness.
I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area where not only is California leading the country in Covid awfulness, but we had horrifying fires that destroyed much of the northern part of the state leaving destitution in its path. People are leaving California in droves. Over 300 restaurants, people’s life and livelihood, have closed. No one I know has the funds, the desire, or the will to celebrate the holidays this year. With that in mind, I am so utterly tired and just disgusted with certain TH-camrs whose suggestions for gifts this year are things like a $325 bottle of perfume or a $75 candle or some sort of luxe sweater for $250.
And then there’s you. You with your extraordinary list of wondrous ideas that is meant to lift up the lives of both people in the equation.
You make me light up inside and you and your wonderful family give me joy...and hope. Emily Dickinson wrote, “Hope is the thing with feathers
    That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
    And never stops at all.”
    Thank you Jessica, for everything.

As soon as you got emotional, I was right there with you. I have lost two loved ones during this time of year, and although the ache lessens as time passes, this year the pain and sadness seems to be coming back. This year, not being able to be near the loved ones that ARE still alive, makes the reminders of the ones passed more noticeable and more painful.
Thank you for pointing that out at the end. There are a lot of people that have never experienced loss during the holidays, and they don't realize that there is pain during this season for some and its not always cheer.
You're definitely a kind and thoughtful soul. We're lucky to have you on this platform to watch and enjoy!

Wow. You touched my heart, what a wonderful list of gifts to share your love. I was quite moved when you talked of writing a letter to tell someone what they mean to you. I decided after 43+ yrs married, I am going to write a letter to my mom-in-law. I do love her, we have had special times together. She just turned 90 last August, and is a hero to me. I can't wait to write that letter, because I will mean every word. We've shared memories that were priceless, while living all over the US and when she visited us when we lived abroad for 3 years and our son was 5mths old (to 3-1/2yrs), who is now 40. Thank you so much for the inspiration...

Of course I cried right there with you Jessie. This year has been a very hard year. More than I expected. Lost my father to cancer after a brief but fierce battle, he gave everything he had because he wanted to be with us longer. God needed him more...
Your letter idea is genius! I found my father's journal, where he wrote his thoughts, dreams and hopes, where he bared his heart and soul and wrote about his children with so much love and so much pride and it broke my heart but at the same time it comforted me.

I also started to cry when I saw you crying. It’s so true that this time of year is so very difficult. I have a family member that hates holidays because he thinks he is alone. His wife left him 10 yrs ago and got the house and 90% of everything including the kids. He was suicidal for a few years. Now he just exists and does not enjoy life at all. Recently we lost our mum and dad which makes things even more difficult. So while some families/people love the holidays we must remember that not everyone does. It can be a very hard time of year. My best friend lost her dad to Covid in the Spring so this is her 1st Christmas without her dad. There are a million reasons why Christmas can be sad. Let’s all be aware and just be grateful for what we do have. Merry Christmas to everyone and Thank You, Jessica!!

i could go on for a while about how much the holidays aren’t a happy time for me, but seeing someone with such a large platform posting a video like this warms my heart ❤️i wish we put more emphasis on time together, simpler gifts and nice gestures over buying stuff (i mean of course who doesn’t enjoy opening a present). but i’ve been asking friends and family lately what they need whether it’s an experience together, help with a bill, a book they’ve had their eye on. possibilities are endless and it’s gone so well!

Do them!” Instead of getting stressed about buying, wrapping, planning, and mailing, I remind myself who I am doing those things for and remind myself how wonderful it is to have them in my life...and if that means the presents don’t get bought because we are busy visiting with each other, that is GOOD.

I love this video & it reminded me of the poem I wrote my mum about 20yrs ago & she still has it, in a frame on her wall & I do believe it's the only gift she has kept over the years, we didn't talk for 4yrs & this poem gave her strength that things would be ok again between us & now we are best friends , my dad passed away 18mths ago & this is the hardest time of year as Christmas is all about family to us & he loved xmas, I got emotional watching this video too x

Jessica I love that you acknowledged how difficult this time of year can be for people. I lost my mum when I was 16 and my dad when I was 23. I still love Christmas but it’s a family time and every year it hits me that I don’t have a family. It means a lot when people acknowledge other people’s struggles and make them feel seen

The recipe binder will be the greatest gift you can ever leave your kids and grandkids. My mom passed away 2 1/2 years ago and it is amazing how many memories are tied to food. I have her recipes as well as my grandmothers. Having a few in their handwriting is always special too. I have asked my aunts for ones in their handwriting too. I have 3 binders for my boys significant others, Thanksgiving, Christmas & Family Favorites. Just irreplaceable things to have! Tyler with his little spider plant clippings reminded me of my mom. She always had jars of those in water setting around to give to everyone. I got emotional with you!!

Definitely agree with the letter idea. I’m terrible at writing to people or sending Christmas cards but, a few years ago I decided to write a letter to my Granny who lived in the UK. I hadn’t been able to visit her for years and due to Alzheimer’s she wasn’t really able to communicate much. But I wrote her a letter. It was so simple, just an update on how I was doing and my family. My brother told me that it meant so much to her because she could read it at her pace, read it as many times as she needed to understand and kept it on her mantle. I actually never got the chance to see her again before she passed but I know that letter brought her joy and it means so much to me to know that we had that little interaction.

You really made me tear up when you were about to cry. I'm in one of those tough phases in life since may 2019 and hearing you say that everything in life changes and that there will be better times coming genuinely made me hopeful. The best gift for me would be my friends surprising me at my doorstep as I struggle to leave the house since I had panic attacks in may 2019. And them driving to me and spending time with me would make me feel loved and give me new motivation to fight against the fear.

I completely understand the emotion .. I have felt guilty for being happy this year because we had our first baby on July 4th 2020. So I feel guilty for being happy for all her firsts when others are struggling or suffering or sad.. but when I give in to that guilt I feel guilty for feeling like I’m shafting my daughter. She deserves for me to celebrate the little things. Man mom guilt! Lol. But we just have to pray for those struggling and do our best to not let covid get us down as well as just the day to day struggles. Stay positive and try to make the best of what we have. It’s been so hard to do that with the gloom of covid. The birth of my daughter and all her first holidays have def been so different that what I ever imagined but I am so grateful to have her for each holiday! We feel so blessed. Sending love and hugs to everyone this season! Thank you Jess and Tyler for all you do and for sharing GiGi with us.

One year, my husband had just lost his job and I was the only one working. I had been diagnosed with pneumonia twice and continued to work through my sickness. We had little money for our Christmas so we did what we could for the kids and didn't buy for each other. I lost my last chapstick that morning somewhere and was offhand talking to my husband about how that was my last chapstick. He knew how much I loved chapstick so he went to Walmart and bought five or six as a gift for me. It wasn't much but it's still one of my most favorite memories because he simply listened to me, solved the one problem he could and knew it would make me happy.

    Getting teary over here!
Just to expand on the letter idea...its wasnt for Christmas but every year when I was young my mom would write me a letter and tuck it away and then showed them all to me when I was older. They make me cry everytime I read them because they're all about what she was proud of me for that year and different memories that I may not have because I was too young to remember etc.

My in-laws live many many hours away. So my kids don’t get to see their grandparents very often. She has always sent those hallmark books, the ones you record your voice reading the story. This year my kids decided that they would record a reading for her, the book is called “Under The Same Christmas Star”, it’s about love.
She opened up her Christmas package on FaceTime with us all and flipped through the book listening to each one of my children reading a page.
She said it was the best gift she has ever gotten! Best 35$ spent! Tears, so many happy tears! ❤️
Sometimes just a simple gift will brighten the spirit!

I love this idea for a video!! Especially with how difficult this year has been for a lot of people financially.
It's not free as it involves money, but since high school, my family has always donated in honor of our other family members for Christmas. For example, in previous years I've done angel tree names for my aunts and uncles. I've donated money to shelters (homeless, women and children, and animal shelters in honor of my mother, sister, aunts and uncles. This year I took the money I would have donated to give to my friend's family to help pay medical bills and medication fees. Our family still does actual gifts for birthdays, but we really like giving to others in need for Christmas to spread the love of Jesus. And I've been telling my family for years that if I really need or want it, I am so very blessed and fortunate to be able to buy it on my own while others are not. It makes me happy knowing I made a difference in a person or animal's life by providing a meal, clothes, linens, etc..

The bit about letters is so good. I have a valentine that my mother wrote me when I was a kid & a graduation letter from my godmother. Both are framed and I reread them when I need to remember that I am loved and have such amazing people in my life. Words truly do make such a long lasting impact
I love this video so much. You've nailed the concept and follow through on this one. I really love these for christmas, but also for ways to gift around the year. Idk, I'm just feeling so optimistic about the upcoming year and love this kind of mindset

Last year I gave my grandpa a photo album for Christmas. My maternal grandma sadly passed away late last October and so I wanted to give him something extra meaningful. He is also 89 years old and so it is difficult to get him something that he actually needs. I included older pictures with people who have passed away and newer ones that I took myself. My mom and I also sat down and wrote a bit of text to each picture. So nice to know that he has that and that he can look at it when he wants to. Cost a bit to do it, but it is quite inexpensive if you can get pictures printed at a good price.
Such a lovely video and so many good ideas I will save away. Lots of love from Norway❤️

This is my top favorite video you've ever done. Great ideas. Heart-felt gifts are so needed in this buy everything world. I love that you mentioned the emotion to the days and that they are a kind of an odd time to the year. I lost my brother to suicide right before the first lock downs. We luckily got his funeral arranged and done before everything changed and we had guests be able to come in a "normal" way. While I've had most the year to grieve all my emotions are 180 again its going to be a long winter until next February where we completed the first year without him 💔 its been the most painful year of my life and all those gifts would mean so much to me to receive from anyone💜.

One Christmas my family and I all wrote 5 things we loved about my grandmother or our favorite memories we had with her. I decorated a jar and placed them in it as a Christmas gift. That way if she ever felt lonely or down or just wanted to read something nice she always had it. She still has it next to her bed. ❤ Great reminder that what matters the most in this world is family, love and memories.
