Because as Truss well knows NOW, from hard experience ,any UK PM or senior cabinet member, trying to be optimistic, when the European financed and influenced, International Monetary Fund, is breathing down your neck after yet another ' unprecedented and it seems, unexpected Covid Pandemic.
The IMF in 2010 told Cameron and Clegg, by way of Osborne that if the UK Government increased borrowing and spending to the UK infrastructure and economy the UK ,Three AAA credit rating would be cut! This now the indoctrinated fear given to Sunak and supported by the Remain UK MSM on programmes of political influence
The IMF state, that excess borrowing to support the crushed UK backbone and frail elderly and poor,is bad and will encourage inflation!

What I can't get behind is her whole presentation, her emphasising certain words to give herself the image like she has any authority, the pause followed by her smiling like she's waiting for teacher to give her a gold star.
Too many leaders concentrate on buzzwords like 'leading the world' and fail. Look at Trump and Boris as prime examples; all they did was talk bollocks. The government could invest in this country if they wanted and yet what do they choose to do? Build a high speed train network from Birmingham to london-which let's face it, its the Tories toy set.
Could we turn old coal power plants into hydrogen facilities? Granted it would cost a bit of money but would mean future generations would not have to rely on a power supply being important from other countries. What did they do instead? Gave it to China.

There are exceptions to the rule, but specially in the Tory party, where ideals are more... let's say "flexible" (Truss being the perfect example of this), there is a reverse selection process. A selection of the unfittest if you will.
Example: who was the highest rated member of BoJos cabinet? Ben Wallace. A smart, educated, disciplined military man who everyone agrees is very competent at his job and someone who CARES about his job... and OF COURSE knew better than to run for next PM! Another Example: Rory Stewart... like him or not it is undeniable he is, intelligent, principled, competent and again: genuinely cares. These people have other interests, other options, opportunities to pursue... unlike BoJo, Truss, Raab, Dorries, Patel... I mean the list is just an all-star lineup of incompetent fantasists who will say whatever it takes one day and the opposite the next in krder to het the next pay-check.
When I say "thick" I'm not talking about raw intellect, but about the required qualities to govern. By definition, it is IMPOSSIBLE to govern without principles, without direction and without morals. We can disagree on what those are, but the total lack of any of those things is what got us here in the first place.

@@Unethical.FandubsGames No she doesnt. Much of the world is seasonal and consumes domestic produce and exports produce appropriate to its growing season. There are also countries using technology to extend its growing season, like the Netherlands. We also have great tech for preserving produce either 'fresh', or using other preservation methods like drying, freezing, pickling, preserves, salting, smoking.
If the Netherlands can do it, New Zealand can do it, (also without any farming subsidy, unlike the EU), the UK can also do it, but it takes several things. A market at home that supports buying domestic product, R&D into maximising capacity and sustainability practices, as well as technical solutions for harvesting and storing food at optimum quality for extended periods.
Theres also room for us to buy products from elsewhere on fair trade terms, like tomatoes from Ghana, outside our own growing season and what we cannot cover domestically. Theres nothing wrong with encouraging good trade and having multiple supply lines for lots of countries...natural disasters, weather changes, war, all effect food security globally, so some diversity of supply and international import and export helps ensure global resilience. The trick is to have a balanced approach.

I woukd say Liz Truss is very bright, determined to succeed and hard working as went to a comprehensive school and then to Oxford, before it had quotas to people who could be accepted .Truss praised her comprehensive with some brilliant teachers, but has the honesty to admit that the inverted snobbery of left wing ideologies, her parents had supported were being used ,to hold back from aspiration, so many of the UK indigenous, population ( of all race and creed). Loyalty to her boss is important to her, which is why she supported Cameron's Remain policies ,but also has the humility to admit that project fear is used for party politicking and she has understood ,why people outside of EU and Labour controlled EU Centric London voted for Brexit.
Sunak has been trained in a narrative to protect the reputation of Tory grandees to always avoid over borrowing as threatened by the IMF in 2010, with a reduction in UK credt rating.
In normal times, this is understandable. However, we are experiencing two wars at the moment . One with an unseen enemy in a Covid pandemic and the other in Eastern Europe. Truss is quite right to say that times are far from normal and obeying usary bank diktat on borrowing ,as we did in 2010 ,to play safe with the profits of international trillionaires,, oligarchs and multi- billionaires is what is actually questionable as immoral, when UK people are being made to pay unfair, EUC generated,, regressive taxes on everything they consume or use and made homeless due to an inflated private rental policy, based on investment in UK property by international, property developers and buy to let mortgages, based on profit from supply and demand

Why not? The Netherlands is the second largest food exporter in the world. It has similar climate and a lot less land and a higher lived density. The Netherlands has invested in R&D and sustainability innovation. Its animal welfare standards are decent, within EU standards, rated B overall. The UK is also rated B and far exceeds EU laws.
The UKs food standards also exceed the minimums set out by the EU, and there is now a focus on reducing unnecessary food waste, which has been a problem under EU regulations, under which millions of tons of food is wasted due to misleading 'use by' and 'best before' dates. It's a good ruse for selling more product to people, but not great for sustainability.
The UK has good resources, standards and food quality. Why would we not create a worldwide brand for promoting that and not only be more self sufficient, but also provide food for countries that cannot sustain themselves on their resources?

@@shelleyphilcox4743 As an ex ag scientist, u are right but I don't believe current farmers would turn over their land to "glasshouse cultivation" I think the UK could indeed produce enough horticultural produce to feed the approx 60 million but it would def have to be intensive horticulture and high tech for sure. This would not fit in with the push (if it is indeed a push) for lower CO2 emissions as a lot of glasshouse grown crops have higher than atmospheric concentrations of CO2 injected into them to increase crop yields. How knows. Tough times ahead for the people of the UK.

@@BushCampingTools The UK is somewhat resistant to innovation and has a poly tunnel vendetta. It comes from a pathological desire to look at wildflower meadows instead of looking at food, and an unreasonable squeamishness at admitting we love a roast dinner and slaughter pigs to eat, and that we are good and wholesome people because we love dogs and horses and cats...and we are nice to our piglets before we eat them in much loved bacon sanwiches and a tasty sausage for breakfast. Yum. We are a funny lot.
Joking aside, we have to get real about food capacity and sustainability. If the last two or three years have shown us anything, it should be that pandemics, natural disasters, climate change and war mean that everyone should be taking food production very seriously, domestically and because of effects internationally. We need diverse supplies domestically, inward and outward. WW2 should also have taught everyone that and about the horrific consequences of inadequate domestic supply and the inability to get any food to other places where there is enormous suffering. So I sincerely hope we review our attitudes and prioritise appropriately.
I really appreciate your input as someone with some actual experience and knowledge of the sector, so thank you :)

      3. There's only so much farm land in this country.
      4. Even in a perfect situation, just where do you think we're going to get the labour to work the farms? For the second year running, farmers are letting crops rot in the fields because they can't find workers.
