When I started flying we always wanted to rent the one plane in the fleet with the DME.
If you had a plane with RNAV you were really styling.
Flying through the open desert in a Piper Warrior if I really wanted to know where I was I flew a radial to or from one VOR and got the radial I was crossing from another.
