    Dont pay any attention to this video, the Astra is a great car, complaining about issues that are so minor they dont matter and his last statement about as the years go on he is sure more faults will develop is a pointless statement as this applies to any car. Loads of car have recalls to fix faults, so what! What a moaner! Almost all cars have faults, I have owned cars from loads of different manufacturers and the only one the have no faults or recalls was a Toyota.

      He's ridiculous isn't he? I've had my Astra for a year now and none of the made up issues this idiot flags up have materialized. Annoying personality vacuum and Top Gear wannabe. He should rename his channel Flop Gear.

      @@stevelampard I also viewed this video and the things he love and hate video's and i must agree.
      Seems like a fixed narrative, where he MUST find things that are good and bad and when there are no real problems, he just finds small stuff to moan about.
      I would very much doubt that the collision warning goes off, if he is stationary and someone walks past his car.
      Maybe the parking sensors, but not the collision warning system.

      The collision alert did go off unnecessarily. He was not headed towards the parked car. Totally normal situation in a city.

  • @jamescutting5472
    @jamescutting5472 6 ปีที่แล้ว +125

    1. Turn down your forward collision sensitivity, which you can do. I have it on the lowest setting and have not had an issue with it. It doesn't happen when people walk in front of you.
    2. Because the sensitivity was so high, it saw your car going at 'x' speed and saw the parked up car, so it went off, as you would expect it too.
    3. The lights is a silly thing to moan about. Just use the lights manually!
    Have had mine for 8 months and have not had much of an issue. It is such a great car to drive, very quick and a good overall car. You seem to post so much hate and dislike for this car - get rid of it? Definitely blowing a lot of this out of proportion.

    • @JohnnyB43
      @JohnnyB43 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, from your instant replay clip you can see that you were coming up behind that parked car that was parked well in your driving lane and that is why the warning light went on and beeped. You can see that in the same moment you have moved more to the middle (right side) of the road to pass the parked car whereas you were previously in the middle of your lane. I would see that as test passed not test failed.
      Sure, you could say that the warning is a little over sensitive. However, it is better to be more cautious / careful than to have an accident.
      And unfortunately many accidents occur where someone has parked on the side of the road or on the motorway lay by and a driver somehow ends up driving straight into them.
      I note on another of your videos that you criticised the lack of space for storing a mobile phone in the centre console. Actually, that lip of plastic in the centre console works very well to place your phone in and have it held there. It is not perfect however because storing your phone in that pocket and connecting the USB port at the same time can be a pain (depending where the port connector is on your phone). Also, 5.5" phone will not fit side on and can only be put in vertically (which isn't the best). But for phones smaller than 5.5" it is great.
      Anyway, interesting review all the same.

    The collision warning goes off because the car on your side of the road, it's their to let you know their is a hazard in front of you, it also goes off if you move to the side suddenly as it thinks you may be falling a sleep. The system pick up the car parked on your side of the road (hazard) due to you getting close to it at speed and seances you not slowing down. That is what it's designed to do. It's a warning. You can turn it off. The auto head lights come on when visibility is not optimal but again you can turn this feature off. Hope this helps.

    Happen to drive the astra for half a year now. In regards to the Anti Collision System radomly going off: it's mostly caused by parked cars at side of the road which are mistaken as the end of a traffic jam. But I keep it on as it saved a distracted pedestrian's ass one time. All together I have to say it's a great car I recommend buying, especially when you look at the prices for one year old examples.

    Had my 1.4T nearly a year now. 1: headlights) I don't find it an issue, half the time I use manual lights anyway because that's what i was used to in my fiesta. 2: collision detection) as many people are saying in the comments just turn down the sensitivity, but I like it, I'm not going to lie it has actually saved me a few times.. we've all done long drives in the dark when we're tired and probably shouldn't have. 3: everything else) not had any of the other issue mentioned, I've had other issue but a few of them were down to the previous owner not maintaining it properly. Only issue I've had worth mentioning is the brake light wiring can start acting up giving you warnings on the dash telling you to 'check brake light' I put mine into vauxhall and they fixed it for free. Hi. The Collision Alert doesn't just monitor the direct front of the vehicle. It monitors from left to right and vice versa. I've got a 2016 Corsa with Collision Alert and it has happened to me before, where there is no car in front of me and it'll alert me for a collision for a car that is on my left or right FRONT. If you look closely at your video, you'll see there was a car on your left. Nothing wrong with the system and it can be turned off as well.

    I have Sports Tourer 1.5 Diesel, 136hp. The only annoying thing I have is a noise coming from the rear wheels. I don't know if it is from the tyres or the poor soundproofing. Otherwise Intellilux headlights are the best I've ever seen, silent motor, good consumption, nice acceleration, very stable on road. There was two false collision alerts, but I turned down sensitivity. I have bought it with 52000 km, in march 2018, now it has 62000 km and it's working fine. No problem with the dashboard or something else.

  • @Chris-eo5zs
    @Chris-eo5zs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Part of the reason the collision alert went off as shown in the film, is no doubt due to the fact you were driving at 35mi/hr when the appropriate speed was more like 20mi/hr. Furthermore, the collision alert doesn't go off until it detects the car on the other side of the road as you go over the blind summit.

    That dashboard is hard to follow. Only small screen is usable. I had that front sensor go off a lot for no reason. I thought some debris, but now it seems faulty. But the car has bigger issues than just sensors. Clutch has issues and its engagement changes once you drive. So you can't have smooth ride or easy start uphill because clutch has mind of its own.

    The only annoying thing about the K Astra is the parking sensors constantly always beeping like mad even when you set the gear to neutral (manual gearbox OF COURSE) and turn on the parking brake. The thing still keeps beeping like mad. Always have to press the button. Otherwise a very good car for the price, very comfortable, handles very well despite the steering being a bit too light, ergonomically superb and doesn't use a lot of fuel.

I got the car back and not only had the chattering not disappeared but now there is growling when I fully release the clutch peddle... 1st gear is the worst and reverse but then gets quieter in 2nd and 3rd.... It’s in the second time and now they have contacted me that they need to contact Vauxhall UK and see if there are any TSB (technical service bulletins) on this engine and transmission. Has anyone else had this issue with the 1.0turbo in general as all Vauxhall models use this engine and trans combination as the petrol ecoflex option differences being drive shafts and engine and transmission mounts.

    i have owned the Aussie Astra RS (1.6T) since 2018 and I agree on some of these points. There just seems to be a lack of refinement in the 'smarts'
    - Auto headlights I completely agree with, and you can't turn them off, even manually, there is no Off setting!. Not a huge issue but this means the infotainment and other lights stay in night mode such as the blind spot indicators which makes them impossible to see sometimes.
    - Auto Wipers often come on in complete dry for no reason. The auto is basically only 'on', not speed, you still have to manually control the speed. If the windscreen is wet when you start the car, it does a half wipe, meaning you manually have to activate them again. To activate a 'single wipe' you have to push it out of 'auto', through off, then to 'wipe', then back to Auto again.
    - Collision warning is overactive, or not sensitive enough, there is no in between.
    - Parking sensors constantly screaming at you, even with the handbrake on, or just randomly activate when the car is not even moving
    - Blind spot monitoring is often disabled with a message on the dash 'Blind spot monitoring temporarily unavailable', seems to do it on the freeway often.
    - SSA is drastically overactive. 5 degree morning, starting the car and it stops the engine 20 seconds later at the end of the driveway. Stops immediately when vehicle stationary, which caught me out several times so now it gets turned off every time I start the car
    - Lane keep assist remains off too because 3 times I went to go around a car turning across traffic and it steered me back into the car I was approaching (and then promptly comes up with the collision warning, duh!)
    - Mirrors can't be set to auto fold when the car is locked.
    - Supports Car Play/AA but not really anywhere to put your phone
    - Black is wearing off some of the door buttons, despite the fact that I barely use/touch them.
    Mechanical issues I have had:
    AC Fan clutch started 'chirping' when it kicks in. Gets progressively worse over time as it wears out? Replaced under warranty, started chirping again about 2 years later hasn't got bad enough to fix again yet.
    PCV Valve went at ~75k Km - Yeah, you'd think that would be a cheap and easy fix but no, it means you have to replace the whole rocker cover with an OEM part. That costs ~$1k for the part, plus seals, labor etc. Expensive to fix. There is one place in Poland(?) that apparently reconditions them at about 1/2 the cost + shipping etc so not that much cheaper. I was JUST in warranty to cover this. It sounds like a belt slipping on deceleration/high vacuum but the noise is actually air going past the front main seal. This is a COMMON fault!
    I love the car but if they just spent a little more time refining the smarts and creature comforts, it would have made negligible difference to the cost, but would really have brought the car to the next level.

    They aren't hard to find! and some settings are even on the steering wheel?

  • @linusgk5042
    @linusgk5042 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a Astra 1.4t ST. And I think that you are wrong and focus on totally the wrong things.
    First, collision warning distance can be set on the steering wheel, normal use I have it on the lowest and I have never had it gone of on that setting, even tho there have been some "close calls" when I am overtaking someone who decides to change lane before looking in the mirror... On long rides I set it a bit higher so I get a warning if I don't have maximum attention on the road.
    I do however have had some issues with parking sensors "seeing ghosts" and being a bit to senetive, it beeps constant and show the closest when there is more than 10 cm (4 inches) from the obsticle, quite annoying when parking in a small garage (my garage have about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) total play on the length of my garage. It sometimes goes of for no apparent reason, once I was driving on the highway at 100kmh+(60mph+) and it went of, but that only happened one time and it was fresh from the factory so maby they did an update during one of the services.
    The lane assist is one of the options that should not be picked, one of the first times I drove the car I was driving home after a double shift and there was no traffic on the highway, halfway home one lane on the highway was blocked and I was on cruise control not paying much attention and when I tried to switch lane the lane assist function was way to hard to overpower. I hadn't realized that the car had that function because it deactivates then the blinker is on... Not so much fault on the car other than it was a bit to hard to force it to switch lanes without using the blinker. That day I turned that function of and have barely used it sins. One more issue with it is that it needs fresh and clear lines on the road to function properly.
    And you failed to bring up one of the most important faults of the car, the whole oil problem. They can't decide what type of oil is supposed to be in the car, it have switched many times since I bought it, dexos 1 and 2 and some other type. But this video is a bit old to know all the times it changed but the first time it changed was prior to this video. Recently they also added some fuel additive to the service plan.
    I don't have any problem with strange nosies or stuff like that, the road noice is rather loud tho, so I'm planning on removing the door panels and add some vibration dampening and some foam behind the speakers.
    And lastly I must say (I know that this affect the more northen regions but) automatic headlight are crap, if there is low visibility the headlight and taillights must be on. And on this car it can be left on all the time and they turn of then you turn of the engine.
    It is a big problem that the lights are not on, I don't se any downside to having the lights on all the time.
    We have had 2 problem with this car so far, one of the abs sensor cables got detached while driving and the whole Christmas tree light up in the dashboard.
    And sometimes (unclear why) maby 1-2 times a year the infotainment display dies. It is somehow linked to the Android auto feature.

    I am currently having issues with my 1.4 turbo petrol. The clutch seems to stick to the floor. I have had the car to a trusted mechanic who says the job is a big one as to replace the clutch slave cylinder, master cylinder and elbow pipe the gearbox needs removed too. I wonder if the gearbox issue this guy talks about has been an issue noticed on a lot of cars but not an actual fault for recall. Either way vauxhall have denied recalls on petrol models for this problem but admit recalls for diesel cars 🤔

      Had a 1.4 turbo petrol 2017 since new. Exactly the same problem with clutch sticking to the floor (stays engaged). Can cause the engine to stall at low speed and you have to pull the pedal up with your foot and then restart engine. Given how common this problem seems to be, very annoying that Vauxhall have not issued a recall. Have bought many Vauxhalls over many years and generally been very happy. However, this is potentially a safety issue and they should sort this. New cars that have unreliable clutch systems and not acknowledging or rectifying the problem is a joke that means next new car probably won't be a Vauxhall.

    I bought this for £10000 used from car showroom. Not worth the money imho. No parking sensors. Speaker quality is crap. Leather seats feel very cheap. Gearstick feels very cheap. No hill start assist. Not even a reverse parking cam even though the car had a touchscreen multimedia stereo which would be ideal for a reverse cam. Price is only 50 on ebay, manufacturers could have installed and saved the hassle. It's also slow in lower gears and takes a while for the turbo to kick in
    Good points are the elite nav turbo is rapid. And its a good looking car and despite the speed great on fuel 1.6. Its also Ulez petrol so can take to London no problem. Also the handbrake is a switch which is excellent but not reliable on hills.
    Because its newish used parts are more expensive but the right place will do it for average price
    Also like all astra cheap to mantain but also very easy to upgrade parts which is a bonus if you have the budget after getting your ass destroyed by the salesman at the dealership for warranty and gap. Haha. But for speed enthusiasts getting a 1.6 petrol that does 200bhp is jaw dropping and if you mod it I'm sure it can be much faster in lower gears.
    I would not pay more than 7000 for this vehicle used, but I now have it for 3 years on finance at 10000 18 plate and I'm happy as its the cheapest on the market so I will stick with it.
    If you want complete affordability stick with vauxhall. Luxury? Then go merc, bmw audi etc

    Your forward collision works as it should, if you pay attention the car detected is parked where it shouldn't ( half road, half sidewalk) the system doesn''t know that stupid people parks like that or if it is only deviated from you to the left, if you hit with your mirror isn't it a collision???? As said here before adjust system sensibility to short distance on city, and long distance or normal to highways or open roads at higher speeds. First you must learn how to use your systems before you call it a fault.

    Is this guy for real lol, all cars have recalls,he's talking absolute crap, ive been a Vauxhall main dealer tech for 5 years now and he has not mentioned 1 common fault with the Astra K. A couple off the common faults are,
    1. The pedal box bushes wear on the clutch pedal causing excessive movement. This is repaired under warranty and has a full pedal box replaced.
    2. The 1.6 diesel engine models have timing chain lubrication issues causing premature wear. It is an engine out job as the timing chain it at the gearbox end which takes on average 12 to 14 hours start to finish.
    3. There is a recall for certain models for the engine ECU to be updated and reprogrammed.
    There are quite a few more but that is another conversation all together, overall the Astra is a good car and very comfortable, please don't listen to this twerp, if anyone has any issues please feel free to message me or reply to the comment.

    I shouldn't waste my time with this reviewer. First, over sensitive auto lights is not a problem. If they're slow turning off that's better than slow turning on, and is often a quirk on all sorts of brands and models you'll see every day. You can switch them off manually if concerned but certainly its not being "complained" about. Second, over-sensitive collision detection- possibly due to the parked BMW in the road, but I get similar on my Astra in bad weather. But you can switch it off in vehicle settings but I think you should keep it on for general safety. VW had a serious supply vs demand issue when it phased out the 1.6 petrol for 1.4tsi. Not sure why he feels relevant calling out supply issues for the Astra like it's something unusual. Car recalls happen a lot for various reasons usually precautionary and not relevant to the review or indicative Astra being a bad car - which it isnt. Reliability, only time will tell, not his unqualified opinion but they're certainly no worse than average which includes VW stablemates, BMWS and Fords. And respectable car magazines have praised the Astra interior quality which isnt to mean it feels premium but is of good quality. A VW golf will disappoint you if you're looking for what you would call "quality".

    • @alijglen
      @alijglen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree!! The lights slow turn off can all be explained if you research the regulations of such systems. Lights constantly going on and off can be distracting for the driver but moreso other drivers. Also, if you are driving in the dark and go through a brightly lit tunnel, they would simply go off and you'd exit the tunnel plunged into darkness if not for the delay. It's there by design and would be found in other cars too. (there are very few, if any, tunnels that brightly lit in the UK)
