Actually it is because the store owners did not want to throw the good food/vegetables away. Since the next day is closed, n the veg by Thursday will not be good enough. Therefore they give them away. This is the idea of not wasting food. Wasting food is sin.
When first came to the Netherlands, on Saturday closing, at the market close to where I lived, store owners would put veg, fruits etc. On crates along the sides. People would come, select n take them home. Especially those with big families. Even now they still do it instead of throwing into the garbage containers.
In NL, we even have a restaurant that collect veg, fruits etc from the supermarket (either damaged or soon expected). They would either canned them, dried them or cook and sell at their restaurant. The idea is we have to reduce throwing good food away. In this world there are people die of hunger. Throwing food away is waste n sin. When I was volunteering at a homeless shelter, we received donated food from restaurants n supermarkets. We turned them to good meals.
The red leave veggie could be so-called Swiss Chard (can't see a close-up picture). It can be used for salad or stir-fry with garlic like you would cook spinach.
I was in Shanghai for my work for 3 months in 1998. What I found most disturbing is the cultures of 'face'. Chinese would order so much food that they don't eat, n then throw away. Just to show they can pay.
Cindy Y.M .Lemcke-Hoong things have changed now even though there are still people throwing away food but more and more people will pack the left overs. Talking about wasting food, I think same problem exists everywhere, especially in North America

I am also wondering why americans need such big house to stay. you know big house will consume much more electricity and energy which will cause global warming . some houses have swimming pool which will waste a lot of water. why can not swim in the big public pool ? for private pool some ppl rarely use it but u still need to change the water very often.water is precious and in need at many others places .for transport. one person one car is really not enviroment friendly . a lot of CO2 and air pollution . why not build public transportation ?just to show they can afford?

Japan is also the same…😓😑
