Hey Kev! I built a pond filter following one of your designs. What a HUGE pond life and time saver! My water has NEVER been so clear! I did install a breather pipe. I love that it gives me a clue as to the stage of the filter. The breather pipe keeps it from syphoning back and the sound gives me an indicator to the gunk level. I used method #2 with a T-pipe just above the surface. Thank you because it works brilliantly!

@@nickmaher8632 My pond was struggling because it is a little overstocked (all my babies grew up!). I had tried many pre-built filter choices but none could keep up and eventually died after about 12-months. This has been the clearest water and has lasted the longest. I doubted not having a UV light...but it's true! I don't need it! I'm so glad I found his channel.

Hi Kev. I built a big filter using your design and it works well. The only issue is cleaning out. I have the bottom output for cleaning but it seems dirt still does not clean out well. I am looking at options to have a false bottom to allow for better cleaning. Looked at the option of having the output for cleaning to be at the bottom of the barrel but it seems risky. Any ideas on how to create a false bottom for better cleaning. Normal creates don't work as the bog is circular

@@habibmasturakhan480 If I may answer, when I first put my filter on it took almost 2 months for it to find its balance and it’s beneficial bacteria load. I had to do a clean out quite often because my pond was yucky prior to installing this. Once those two months passed, the thing has been beautiful. If you are still within this two month period, this could be what’s going on. Your filter is still getting its balance. If you need to do more cleaning than what a drain out can offer, have you tried rinsing from the top down? The drawback to this is, you will also be flushing out the beneficial bacteria that you have built up.

i have breather holes on the plumping for my aquarium sumps. very nice to know that in a power outage the water will only fall as far as the hole in the pipe and there is zero chance of overflow in the sump

Thank you, Kev! I was baffled as to why my "breather" pipe didn't prevent backflow. Now I can see that I have it plumbed incorrectly. I will be fixing in the spring.

In my case I use bigger pipe for the filter intake and let the water pipe from the pump above the water, it cuts the back flow since the intake water is above the water level thus it won't flow back, and when the water from the pump hit the lower water inside the bigger pipe down, it creates water bubbles where the small(micro) bubbles goes down the bigger one will back up.
Btw I really love how pristine the water from your pond is, love it

Hello Kev, my 1200L-1500L pond was struggling because my goldies have been breeding like rabbits. Saw your bog-filter vid & knocked up a wheelie-bin with a small pump, piping & rocks/gravel I had lying around. Crikey what a difference it's made, water is clearing up daily & the fish are far more active & obviously happier. Thank you mate & HNY to you & yours.

Thanks so much for this video kev as I'm gonna be building one in the coming months. Today I've just bought an 80 litre plastic half barrel tub for it and your drawings an explanation here are great, as I had exactly these same questions on the breather pipe. Here in the uk it's - 3 degrees at the moment, but looking forward to my bigger pond build when it warms up a bit 💪👍

You can drill a 2mm hole in your pipe that drains into the bog at the point where your pipe goes over your bog. Some water will trickle out into the bog instead of leak out and does the same function as a breather pipe

    Hi Kev,
Love your channel. You've inspired me to the point that I'm building a bog filter for a 30 litre aquarium. I'm just going to use a piece of 100mm pvc pipe and some rocks, gravel and sand, but was planning on capping both ends and having plants in the aquarium instead of the filter for nitrogen control.
My question is do the plants perform another necessary function in the bog filter that I'm missing?
Keep up the great work, one day I aim to build a huge natural swim lake on my property, and the knowledge you're providing has been feeding into the design.

@@Ozponds I just watched your video on filter media. For this application (aquarium bog filter in 100mm pvc pipe) I was going to use the expanded clay, some aquarium gravel, and coarse sand. After watching your video I'm wondering if you'd recommend leaving out the sand and maybe also the gravel?

Built my first bog filter yesterday probably a bit of overkill the filter is a 60 litre drum the pond is about 250 litres one of them frefab imitation rock type ones with a waterfall
Working great I put a elbow on the breather and just swiveled upwards so no water escapes

  • @jamesdempsey2652

I put a vertical pipe on my breather hole and water still shoots out the top! Looks like I need to install a regulator valve. If I don't keep a cap on the breather pipe my filter overflows!

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Must be a really decent flow rate or the filter itself is very clogged and not allowing water to percolate up slowly through the rock and pebble.

What are your thoughts on seed shrimp? I always have a plethora of them on the surface when cleaning out my rock filter. I'm pretty sure my frys and fingerlings are eating them for snacks, but is there ever a time when I need too be concerned about their numbers?

    • @Ozponds

I think they are pretty harmless. I do worry when something becomes over dominant. Just makes me wonder why that is.

Best advice, don't put the pipe in and see what happens lol. I did that and it went to hell so in the pipe went. I also thought about a valve but in a blackout or lose of power it's like having no breather at all
