But the thing is for a puzzle to be entertaining, you need a reward. The reward with this one is that you don't know the reward but it seems like a hidden knowlage of some kind. People really do got obsessed with that puzzle, some of them spent year's to solve it and built communities around it. And after all of that, the reward will probably never be shown to the public, it might be just a cult trying to get people so invested in something like solving a puzzle to obeying anything in search for the next reward.

I personally got as far as receiving a phone number. I called the number. It was almost as if someone picked up and hung up immediately after the first ring. About 5 minutes later I started receiving cryptic text messages and automated phone calls from unidentified numbers. The first message I was assigned what appeared to be an id number and password. Phone never worked the same again and I abandoned the puzzle for fear of my own security. I tried to find information about the original number I called and according to others who have done the same thing it was traced to a random pay phone in the Mojave.... Still perplexed as to what this could all be building towards. And for anyone who believes it's the recruitment method for the collective known as anonymous, it is not. We had a group of about 70 dedicated to solving the puzzles.

    Analysis:
    1. Cicada: important insect in origamy world
    2. 3301: prime number, someone with math skill involve here
    3. Encrypted massage: someone who has the expertise and works in daily basis with crypto
    4. Many locations in the US: the home country of the circle members
    5. Other locations around the world: mostly are US allies and well developed countries
    6. 2012 till 2016: when the politic in the US dominated with middle lefties
    7. Silent after 2016: unsolved riddle and the changing of political situation in the state.
    Temporary deduction:
A bunch of US citizens who have expertise in cryptology, have huge interest in math and origamy, and work for an institution related with cyber security make this viral riddle.
Probably the members are NSA workers or former of NASA officers who move to NSA.
Purpose, to recruite a new member with like minded ideology.

Well, you don't necessarily have to finish the puzzle to get the price tbh. It was a recruitment tool to see who would be the best their new leader in a since. Their whole team worked together to make that puzzle so 1 person can solve it. With their ideology, they are looking for a change but they don't really have all the tools they need to set the path. The few who did solve the puzzle by themselves are capable enough to do "in Cicada 3301 thought" anything they want to change the current state of the world. But for me, I have believed in this one simple fact, when any country went for their independence they had an organization with many different leaders and suppliers that have drastically different specialties. Having a one-trick pony only gets you so far until you get stomped out by somebody can do the same thing as you and more. But that my thought though, besides that I would be interested in their perceived "end game." "Infomation and knowledge are useless unless you have the will to act."

Meaning that Cicada stopped giving out puzzles because someone has already finished the whole puzzle. And by what the email said they cant talk about it otherwise they will be disqualified-ish since Cicada is like a group of people that have no identities and ofcourse if you gave out the outputs of the finished puzzle they cant accept you since your identity is already known. Anyways thats just a theory, A GAAAAME THEORY

Last two references is "tapping away in the digital forests of the night" to William Blake's poem The Tyger, "Tyger, Tyger, burning bright, in the forests of the night" and "the path they created [...] led nowhere" either refers to Corinne Roosevelt's "The Path that led Nowhere" or Aleister Crowley's "Book 6: Liber O" where he deals with what he calls "the Paths".
