  • Middle Fork Gila River Backpacking - In this episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, I hike from Doc Campbell's Post to Pie Town. It's a 6.5 day, 145 mile hike through one of the most incredible places I've ever hiked. The Gila Wilderness is the World's first wilderness area, and at 558,000 acres, is the largest in New Mexico. Highlights of this section include 40 miles of hiking along the Middle Fork Gila River below 1000 foot sheer cliffs, hot springs, a bear sighting, and a climb up one of the last remaining manned fire towers in New Mexico.
    Backpacking the Middle Fork Gila River is an amazing experience. The Gila River is one of the best sections of the Continental Divide Trail thru hike. After leaving the Gila Cliff Dwellings, I hike the middle fork gila river to Jordan Hot Springs via the Little Bear Canyon CDT alternate, highly recommend it. Bring your fly rod and take a shot at catching the Gila Trout, native to the Gila River. I would love to hike the East Fork Gila River and West Fork Gila River someday as well, the entire Gila Wilderness is incredible, really.

      The Gila is such an amazing area! It was the highlight of New Mexico for me and one of the highlights of the CDT overall.

      That's one thing New Mexico seemed to have a lot of, and that's diverse landscapes. Just what a thru hikers needs :) The Gila was so cool, like a hidden oasis in an otherwise dry region. After hiking through the desert for a week and a half, this was just incredible!

    you have made so much work editing all the footage it is incredible... Id definitely lose my patience spend so much time in front of the screen )) Gila is incredible place I have found out about this area just a few days ago, and second of all I had no idea CdT goes through this wilderness)) I thought it is all in the flat desert up till the Colorado border =DDDD

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I joke that the editing took almost as long as the hike itself. It would be funnier if it weren't so true, haha. That got me through the winter last year, one of the most brutal winters my area has seen in a while. No, New Mexico is far from flat! But, it sure seemed flat as hell looking back once you enter Colorado, with all the climbing :)

    Having only been to Albuquerque, I didn't know NM was so varied and stunning. Did the stagnant water sources taste as bad as they looked? Loving these resupply to resupply stretches of content.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is definitely a varied state, that was my impression. Honestly, the fact that it was so varied was something that, by the end of the hike, I really valued. Colorado was the same the entire state. Montana also felt monotonous after a while. There were a lot of nice views, but it was all the same every day. In new Mexico, there was a bit more sense of adventure and discovery. But, also a lot of road walking and maybe not always the best views compared to the other states. So I suppose each state has it's own pros and cons.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and the water sources... My Sawyer filter takes care of most of the taste issues. If there is an off taste, I have some liquid drink mix to mask it. But believe it or not, none of these were actually that bad

    • @nobodyhikes
      @nobodyhikes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeekingLost That's good to know, thanks. I'm sure when you're out there, you're just happy to have a source of usable water.

    • @nobodyhikes
      @nobodyhikes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeekingLost That's surprising as I imagined it to be the opposite. That makes the CDT even more appealing than it already is.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nobodyhikes In New Mexico, I often carried 5L of water. This allowed me to choose the best water source of the day, whereas other hikers carrying 2-3L capacity are pretty much stuck drinking every available water source, no matter how nasty it is. I didn't personally find the water sources to be too bad, partially because of that reason, and also because I've done a lot of desert hiking in the past. Crappy water is often the only water in the desert, and like you said, sometimes any water is good water!

    Amazing! The colors look fantastic. I might have to do some color correction in my videos now.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It makes a big difference! I used to just accept the colors I would get in a photo, but you can do amazing things in post. It turns a good picture into a great picture! Same with video

      @@SeekingLost okay...deffinately going to make some adjustments in my next video.

  • @lenkerr7485
    @lenkerr7485 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What are you using to get the vivid colors in your videos. Filter?

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just good color correction in adobe Premiere Pro. The original gopro footage is flat and the color must be added back in post. This used to be a straight forward process in gopro studio but gopro abandoned the software. So now I'm left to do my own color correction. In Premiere, I used two separate layers with two different LUTs I created, stacked over the original gopro footage. I'm much happier with the colors I was able to achieve in Premiere vs with the standard gopro LUT, so it all worked out in the end.

    Love your videos. Thank you for sharing. Is there a guide book that has the alternate trai through the Gila? I live in southern NM and would like to section hike some if the CDT but the Black Range section is not that appealing.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if there's a guide book map for the Gila alt, but you can have a look on my blog, I have a map of the route I took through the Gila there. You can download the GPX (center of the page here... seekinglost.com/hikes-other-adventures/cdt-thru-hike-2018/), and import into caltopo.com to create your own version of my map to edit. I wasn't too psyched about the Black Range either which is why I took the alt, but I have heard the Black Range is cool on it's own. But no way is it cooler than the Middle Fork Gila, just no way!

    What would you rate this section? Moderate or difficult/strenuous? I'm thinking about section hiking it in the spring.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it's more moderate. Especially if you're not looking to do thru hiker miles, and a more leisurely pace. It can be a little tiring walking through all that water but not in the same way that a day of 5000' of elevation gain is. I say go for it! I can't wait to get back here and really take my time, explore some side canyons and things

  • @Dianawatters

    I’m loving all your videos, but the music is distracting and annoying; it would be much nicer to hear the river, or the quiet that you got to experience personally. This world is full of so much noise and constant stimulation. Sorry to complain, just my opinion. Good job all around.
