Diesel engines do not like the cold. The diesel engines in pickup trucks have an internal heater which you can plug into an electrical cord whenever the temp gets below 40. The engine stays warm and starts right up with no smoking. I do not know if marine diesels have this heater. Maybe a little space heater in the engine room might help.
