100%, they'd never put down a Ukrainian song like the one in Eurovision a couple of years ago or any Palestinian songs would they? So why erase our past to not offend, it's ridiculous.
If it's secular, why not? But I don't think it would be secular. I'm of Irish Protestant heritage and so is my husband although the Inksters claim to be from the Orkney islands. I love Irish music and spent several years in my youth in Newfoundland which has strong Irish traditions, but I can't see supporting the IRA.
Fair play to him calling out rte and d rest of d media its our music u can hear d fear in her voice and as always giving a dig at irish culture would she ask a muslin not to play d music they want to hear
Too much pandering to foreign cultures in our country, this is Ireland, we should be proud to be Irish and stop the self flagellation and self hatred. I respect other cultures, but this is Ireland, hello.
The great old fashioned traditional Irish rebel tunes like the ones the Wolfe Tones sing should be cherished by one and all on the island of Ireland because they belong to everybody - Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter.
Slow "news" day. Rebel music has existed without any mainstream support for decades, and will continue to do so. Despite the forelock tugging toads in the media/establishment.
6:33 That texter (Lara in Dublin) has no idea how big Irish music and Rebel music actually is throughout the country. Maybe not in the part of Dublin she is from but it is huge around the country. Go to any of the multiple festivals, full of young fans, around the country.
13:12 Yer man here is talking through his hat. Very few of the Wolfe Tones' songs concern the 1969-1994 Northern Campaign (Joe McDonnell, Men Behind the Wire, the Helicopter Song); most concern the Tan War and beforehand, traditional airs. There are plenty of bands who specialise mainly in music concerning the IRA, like Black 47, Athenrye, the Barleycorn and many others.
This caller Daniel, who doesn’t think the Wolfe Tones were in the same league as Big Tom. Dan, when the Wolfe Tones were on tour in Birmingham, attendance figures for the Wolfe tones would be around the 1,000 mark. At the same time no disrespect to Big Tom, but these are figures way above his attendances. Popularity and reach can not only be measured by chart hits in Ireland.
That caller Daniel is comparing traditional Irish bands that were played on the radio to the rebel songs of the Wolfe Tones, it's not the same thing. There's obviously a difference between a song like Go On Home British Soldiers and Rocky Road To Dublin, Raglan Road, or Danny Boy. We sang Weile Weile Waile when I was in school - that has probably been dropped since. Morrissey said he can't get his new album with a song he wrote about the Manchester concert victims released
He should be able to release it, nothing was said about Margaret on a guillotine or the queen is dead. Why should someone not be allowed to express themselves through lyrics and music reflecting real life. That's how musicians expressed themselves through rebel songs and our anthem.
Watched the Wolfe Tones here in Birmingham many times during the dark days of the’80’s and early ‘90’s. The well attended concerts always generated such energy and enthusiasm. In truth Rebel songs can offer a very simplistic view of the history of Ireland, but they are an invaluable asset in starting to get a grip on events that shaped irelands past. During waves of official censorship and self censorship, rebel songs are vital. Thank you Brian and Co for all that you have and continue to do, in upholding an important part of Irish culture.
i played in an Irish band in New Zealand some years ago .We often sang that song Streets of New York .One night we played it and we noticed a new member who had just joined us from the US at the end of the song was in tears .She found the song so moving ,it described immigration and loss .We also sang a maori rebel song Hokai Mai .The Maori people loved it .Whether we like it or not music like other literary forms address what is not comfortable .Or should we descend to marketing ???
That Daniel was such a west Brit he is probably an rte employee. So what if they supported the IRA, the English national anthem GSTK is effectively a celebration of centuries of terrorism. You simply have to laugh at the likes of Daniel.
Fact is, most of the Irish people were against the rebellion as it happened during the First World War. But they all benefitted from the rebellion. Truth be told the rebels took advantage of the fact that British resources were being spent elsewhere.

Well that’s just not true the vast majority pf people on the island were for rebellion and independence I think what you are talking about is Dublin people during the 1916 rising that were against it only for the fact that during that week they didn’t no what the men were fighting for and only seen them destroying there city
No i have a great idea lets display the lgbt flag at internationals and lets write a song to sing in honour of them😂😂😂😂😂.Since we now have buses and schools and cop stations and post vans displaying the colours illegally why not remove the tricolour completely
Its important to note, many rebel songs come from decades, if not hundreds of yesrs ago. They are quite litteraly a part of history.
No ordinary person asks these questions
Absolutely The voice of protest should never silenced.

I am Irish American. Love the wolf tones. Love Irish history. And love the Irish people. Pray for a united Ireland

No.
It's not Ireland anymore, population replacement is on, full steam ahead...so we don't care anymore.

Makes you proud to be Irish ☘️

Yes. Rebel songs are brilliant.
The great old fashioned traditional Irish rebel tunes like the ones the Wolfe Tones sing should be cherished by one and all on the island of Ireland because they belong to everybody - Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter.
dissenters im not to sure but the sentiment i like all the same

A Freedom fighter's Song would better describe it ... The reason our lineage survived to sing out with pride ... It actually means something... ☘

Rebel songs are part of my childhood and beautiful songs

This sounds like a propaganda stunt
Yes.....its part of our heritage
It's OK that people see themselves as British. And March away lads. But rebel songs, like any song, should be sung by whoever wants. Love em.
Let the people sing 👍
Those songs are history put to music, what is wrong with that?
They're part of a global conspiracy to reduce the already tiny minority of white europeans

RTÉ are too busy kissing the backsides of the likes of Ian Paisley and Bob Geldof to care about true legends like the Wolf Tones.
Ian Paisley passed away years ago.
What is wrong with NewsTalk?
Everything
They're part of the establishment abd wannabe elites who hate us.

Rebel songs are apart of are culture and they are what makes use Irish
play it everywhere, graffiti should be present too. and speak Irish whenever possible, this might slow down your replacement
I fully agree
And learn your history and use it as the foundation you stand on unshakeable. Im reading havertys Irish history at the minute published in 1860.
Always was always is always will be.

It’s really only the main stream media that deems the music unacceptable. Your way behind everyone else 😂
