WARNING! These composite deck boards contain dyes, preservatives, mold inhibitors, UV blockers and many other TOXIC chemicals not intended to be in constant contact with soil or water! They could leach into the soil and end up in the vegetables you grow. This is why the manufacturers of plastic deck boards ONLY recommend them for ABOVE GRADE installation. DO NOT BUILD A GARDEN BOX FROM PLASTIC DECK BOARDS. This guy did no research on the safety of what he is recommending!

I made the exact same thing about 8 or 9 years ago. I didn't caulk it which has proven to be a mistake. Sediment has pushed the joints apart.

Hi Chris, where did you get your information? I doubt any manufacturer would add preservatives to polyethylene as it is already decay resistant.

Those boards off-gas into your soil making it less organic. Maybe there is a liner or some other solution?

Not to be negative, but using your miter gauge and your stock against the fence is going to give you major kickback one day. Please, please, ask someone how to do this in a much safer way.

True, not the safest way to use a table saw.

Next time, miter those corners. It will look better. If you had a biscuit joiner, you wouldn't even need screws, assuming you have composite biscuits and the right glue.

Mitered Corners would definitely look nicer, but it would take more time and precision. Definitely the way to go if you want a more finished look.

I built a 3' x 8' x 11" prototype box with mitered corners after watching your video. It took a while, but the next 10 or 20 I do will be quick. I guess if you're only building one or two, it wouldn't make sense to invest in a compound miter saw, but I have one already. I plan to miter, drill, and slot the edges (for aluminum biscuits) while each board is still on my miter saw stand. Drilling jigs also speed up production. I'll post a video once I get back on that project.

I think that’ll look great! Especially if you place it on a deck with matching color. I would like to see your finished product, Thanks for sharing your idea!

In general it is not considered safe to use a miter slide at the same time as a rip fence on a table saw because it could bind and kickback drawing your hand into the blade and/or you could be injured from the impact of the kickbacked piece.

Hey Walter, you’re absolutely right! I’ve watched videos on kickbacks and it’s such a sudden event, it has changed how I cut wood. Thanks for getting your point across without being rude! 👍

Read a pamphlet on table saw safety.

Hi Jeffrey, $18.37 x 6 decking boards = $110.22. My planter still looks brands new, and I’ll be making several more for my wall.

Don’t ever use a miter gauge with a rip fence like that….
