When I was in high school, I was obsessed with John Mayer’s music. I listened to Vultures at least 500 times. I had a friend who was equally obsessed. We convinced our parents to let us go a few hours drive away to see him play on his battle studies tour. It was my first concert and we were so excited to see him that we got to the venue around 3 or 4pm, before they had even set up the ropes for the line. We entered when they opened the doors and trudged up probably 10 flights of stairs to our seats at the absolute top of the venue. When we got to the top, we were just excited to see that they had bathrooms and snacks upstairs and we wouldn’t have to go all the way down and back up to pee. While we were wandering around up there, two women came up to us and asked us about our favorite John Mayer songs and talked about his music a little bit. Then they asked to see our tickets and like complete idiots we handed them over. The woman said “oh these are terrible seats” to which I started to say something in offense. But then she started RIPPING up the tickets. My friend and I literally screamed and the woman nonchalantly said “oh no you don’t want these seats because I have front row tickets for you…” she handed us front row tickets and walked away while we processed what had just happened and starting screaming with excitement. We rushed downstairs and found our seats in the front row. We made friends with one of the security guards by sharing our gum and he got us on stage to dance with the opening act, Michael Franti and Spearhead. Then John Mayer played my favorite song from the new album right in front of us and I could have just died of happiness. No other concert experience is ever going to top that for me. I think the woman must have been someone from Mayer’s team, trying to spread some joy to the most devoted fans or at least pack the front with the most enthusiastic concertgoers. Whatever the reason, I’m still grateful and love his music now as much as I did then, albeit with less screaming on my part.

@@r.v.9005 Well, someone is fairly ignorant to music i see. Spreading misinformation such as this, undermining John's talent all the same. Well done.
Listen. A riff doesn't need to be complex to sound great to the ears. You're probably shocked to hear that. But music is not about complexity. It's about feeling, and something that sounds good to the ears and that moves your soul. Simple or complex matters not. Some of the greatest music pieces ever written on guitar doesn't have complex riffs. And if you're not into John's "simple" guitar riffs, then why are you even here to begin with?

I’m pausing at around at 5:28…to reflect a bit. I don’t think it’s possible to like John Mayer and be just a casual listener! I actually view the world differently every time I listen to him. For me, some of the pieces start to connect, and the NOW becomes more present. I remember to feel, joy and pain and use my senses to capture the moment. It’s taken me years to discover and appreciate John’s music and style, but it’s refreshing, especially trying to get to know him just as he is.

I'm so happy there's somebody that has this similar of an experience with John. I love listening to him think, talk, sing because anytime I do I feel like I learn something new. About myself, about my friends, about the universe. It's like philosophy class + therapy all in one. And I don't know if you have the same, but it doesn't have to be for me that I 100% agree with him on anything or change my view point to fit his, but his unique perspective on some of life's most random areas offers an "in" into a conversation with myself and then I get to reflect critically on my feelings towards that.

I find John Mayer, the personality, fascinating. I didn’t really listen to his music until well into his career. I’d say “New Light” forward, he musically got my attention. “Guess I Just Feel Like” is amazing… John Mayer the storyteller and John Mayer the personality are perfectly balanced. Until the outro solo, I think there are many singers that could pull the song off because it’s so good of a story. The outro is Mayer….nobody else could touch it.

I completely understand his concept of not liking something immediately and that you'll grow to love it, at least from a listener point of view. When Battle Studies came out there were a lot of songs that I just didn't gel with, didn't really make a connection to. Then I went through some heartbreak and relistened to it all and was like holy crap this is amazing! I understood all the little nuances within each song and had a greater appreciation for them after that. There have been many JM albums where I just hadn't hit that spot in my life to fully appreciate the song and the moment yet. As a songwriter however, I have a hard time understanding wanting to write a piece of music that you don't like. I feel like even if other people around me were telling me it was a fantastic piece I'd still be unable to finish it because I wouldn't feel compelled. I need that immediate feedback of emotion, the "this makes me feel good" response. I guess that's why he's making the big bucks though and I'm not :). Perhaps it's something to try in the future though. I could just sit and listen to nuggets of advice from John for hours.

I love Wild Blue, it is a fantastic song, it has great lyrics, beautiful chords, cool lead, it is a perfect song. I really liked it when John jokingly changed the lyrics and sang about the dogs in the swimming pool. That was really funny and cool. I am a animal and I love doggies and playing guitar. Thanks 👍🎸🙏😎✌️

Why Georgia is still an awesome song. and he is in touch with many genres of music which is cool. I love to hear musicians rattle off their fav songs especially if those songs were written before those people were born.

I still vividly remember the November of 2009 when I by sheer luck had won VIP passes for Monsieur Mayer's Live At The Chapel concert in Sydney (Yep! It was in a church) and I was over the moon. There was a whole pink carpet situation and bubbly and the Australian Idol of that year were around too. I was just focusing on all the brilliant music I was about to be immersed in soon though with his Battle Studies being out and I ABSOLUTELY loved the whole album. Me and my darling gal pal trudged up towards the front as the emcee popped up and we were like a couple of rows in front with it being a standing concert. And THEN he appeared and the first song was Heartbreak Warfare and everything after that was just surreal. I'm so glad I have that memory. He's a genius and a beast with the guitar and one has to experience it in person to really understand it.

Wild Blue, is my personal go to song of late, since hearing it after it's release..... When I want to feel " at home" in myself and in my own company I head straight to this song.... ( not that I don't ever feel at home in myself at any time ) it's just very soothing, calming, otherworldly ... like me lol 😆

I've been a huge Mayer fan as a guitar player since forever but could never say the same regarding his personality. Now it's changing and I'm starting to like the guy more and more. He is actually cooler and more down-to-earth now I think. I also love his lessons and guitar posts on youtube and social media.

I liked some of his old songs a lot like waiting on the world to change. When he was answering the question about America's ex boy friend, he give the clear vibe of his current orientation, which I am completely fine with that but I was not aware of that at all.

@@johntuccillo8182 glad you got the see it. It's definitely on my list. I'll see Mayer any time I can, and I've heard great things about Dead and Co shows. He is such a talented musician - singer, songwriter, sick guitarist. The whole package. Even the greats recognize his guitar skills. Really cool to have followed his career while we both grew up (we are around the same age).

Ik! he’s a phenomenal person to look up to. Especially since he carrie’s with him a part of the blues legacy from the greats-hendrix, BB, srv. as well, he has lots of jazzy influence and that soft spot for pop music. i’ll have to see him con solo when he comes around. keep your ears open for the D&C summer tour!
