  • I've been neglecting Maison & Velier's TCRL collection as of late - unjustly so, considering how much fun I've had with their offerings in the past (see • Fijian Rumparison: Tra... for Fiji and • Weird Column Rum Round... for Trinidad). So today I'm making up with it by tasting six relatively recent releases at once. And just to make it fun, we're doing this blind:
GLASS 1: Australia 2014 7 Year Old Rum (Beenleigh Distillery, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; aged 5 years in Australia and 2 years in Europe, bottled 2021; 47% ABV), 84+/100
GLASS 2: Barbados 2015 6 Year Old Rum (Foursquare Distillery, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; aged 5 years in Barbados and 1 year in Europe, bottled 2021; 55% ABV), 84-/100
GLASS 3: High Seas "Caribbean Blend" Rum (bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; 6 year old Panamanian rum with Jamaican high ester rum & Martinican grand arôme, bottled circa 2022; 45.7% ABV), 83+/100
GLASS 4: Jamaica 2016 5 Year Old Rum (Worthy Park Distillery, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; aged 4 years in Jamaica and 1 year in Europe, bottled 2021; 57.18% ABV), 86/100
GLASS 5: Panama 2015 6 Year Old Rum (Varela Hermanos Distillery, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; aged 2015-2021 in Panama; 43% ABV), 80/100
GLASS 6: Mauritius 2017 3 Year Old Rum (Gray's Distillery, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line; aged 2017-2021 in Mauritius; 50% ABV), 85/100
Most of this went pretty much how you'd expect, but let's mention the big surprises. First, put that Gray's Mauritius on your radar, pronto: at three years old Glass 6 tasted like the most mature thing here, something like the happy middle between a baby Foursquare ECS and a northern Italian amaro. And it's cheap, too. The actual Foursquare was honestly a little bit of a letdown by contrast: it's sort of a youngish Doorly's Full Proof, if that were a real product.
Beyond that? The Worthy Park won, because of course it did, and the Beenleigh is herbal and delicious (if not exactly showing its age). The Panama is, well, pretty much what you'd expect a young 43% Cuban-style rum to be, and that's fine. And the High Seas blend is really well done, something that could easily anchor your bar's aged rum requirements. And hey, I actually managed to guess most of these this time around, which is a bit of a confidence booster...
