- How many calories are in a handfull of toasted oats or cheese balls? We get a general idea by just burning them and observing the size of the flame that is generated.
Imagination Station, Toledo's hands-on science center, is a vital non-profit organization that is an integral part of Toledo's economic, educational and social landscape. Imagination Station provides a critical layer of science enrichment by serving as an educational partner for teachers, schools and parents. It's with a thoughtful blend of exhibits, experiences, education and excitement that Imagination Station is inspiring future generations of scientists in Northwest Ohio. With more than 250 hands-on exhibits and demonstrations, Imagination Station delivers a multi-sensory experience that's as fun as it is educational.

Well that's one way to burn calories
gave me a chuckle

your body does pretty much the same thing its called burning for a reason
lemme just measure how many calories i have
StarzzDrak i’ll just burn myself real quick
@@bryannenm6937 behind the joke
No man there's so much to live for :(
bruh
@asstronut you sure? lol
lol the toasted oats are now very toasted
Now I know exactly what happens to cheese puffs once they reach my stomach, I'll feel better eating the whole bag.
LOL!
So where were the measurements exactly?
I wonder how many kids tried to set fire to their food after this.
+zayarummm we did this in science!
YASSS
I'm definitely trying this at home
You can never tell if a karen is joking or not
Who asked?
awesome video. Great work. learnt a lot from this video.
0:53 The girl totally thinks "this is why you are still single".
lmao
He fugged her after the show ;-)
@@xvzf115 "you know what's another good way of burning calories?"
How do you measure the so call calories?
So this is something I've tried to read about and wondered about and all it took was a cool program on a local TV station to show me in an easy to understand way!
how many calories or joules in one liter of diesel ,please tell as accurate as possible
The thing is, I don't think calorie contents as stated on food packaging is accurate. They don't take into account that while in the lab, fiber burns up, in your body it's not absorbed and therefore passes out unburned (and probably takes some other stuff with it). Even fat isn't completely absorbed by the body and therefore the calorie count for say, a T. of butter, isn't exact. A lot depends on the cooking process as well as your digestive system.
As I understand it, it's about how much energy the food is fueling that fire. Obviously, the human body is not fire, but it does need energy and these foods have energy to.provide for us.
Calories are BS with the body one of my favorite videos is a physicist completely dismantling it😅
Wrong. Ur body makes use of every single calorie. Ur body is a survival machine. You dont use it its stores as fat. Nothing goes to waste.
what about wet food like fruits and fish they won't burn!
I think they desidrate bedorr
I'm assuming they do the test on their dehydrated counterparts
They are dehydrated first - good thinking!
Not sure what you are trying to argue here, but the purpose of using combustion is to determine the potential energy stored in food. They never argued that this is how food is actually digested. We need food to generate ATP, the food we eat provides us with the ability to create ATP, and therefore some foods provide us with more energy than others. Even though our body uses different mechanisms for releasing the energy stored in food, burning the food reveals the amount of energy stored.
This method is used to determine the calories in food, and then print the number on a label. Today, people really think that calories are the energy used by their bodies. So, don't you see the argue make sense?
What can i do to measure calories of fruit?
I am wanting for more interesting experiments .
I did this 4 years ago but we used a Bunsen Burner because our teacher didn't trust us lmao
fantatic item to bring to classes. Thanks
Title needs to be changed to burning food for no apparent reason. No calries were measured there, so,what was the point?
What if they used non calories sweetner
if we use HCL as in our stomach ,then how we calculated it ,didn't you think that one liter petrol can be used as calorie unit for overweight peoples
That was a bad message lol. Toasted oats have just as many or more calories than most brands of cheese puffs per g and if you get the brands with added sugar and/or nuts, you're definitely going to consume more calories in an average bowl of toasted oats with milk than an average bowl of chips. That said, moderation is key.
Richard dreyfuss?
fascinating, science, chemistry, and math is everywhere!
where is the math? sit down
Why would you want to? For fun? Because if you really want to know what the calories of the fruit are, it's all online already.
defiantly trying this
Someone please tell me how to measure the heat energy produced from the fire
I am doing an experiment in which i burn sucrose just like this
I have to measure the total heat energy produced by the combustion of sucrose
Plzzz reply
you know.. theres this new technology.. maybe you ever heard of it... its called THERMOMETER!
then the degree of heat caused be converted to kalori.
I know that it's probably too late for this to be helpful, but what you do is burn the sucrose and use the flame to heat a known volume of water. You can take the difference in temperature before and after to figure out the energy absorbed by the water using the following equation: E=dT*m*c (E=energy, dT=change in temp., m=mass of water, and c=the specific heat capacity of water (4.186 J g-1 K-1))
I am eating enough to burn my whole street
LOL!
We burn witches with cheese puffs
I love snacks
SO.... Where is the measured values??? Not related to your title!!
not a good representation since we don't burn stuff everyday in pure oxygen
My engine is gonna need this to combist
how are you doing i need help my cat is stuck in a tree can u help mé
But what about Dave!!?
He burned it
don't try this at home unless you're absolutely twisted in the head
lets go
no cap
on god
I love this video! I shredded my extra weight by changing ingredients in my cooking. Its fact that if you take in more calories than you burn off during the day you will gain weight! I discovered a lot of my recipe ideas from *Fionas fat free family feasts* - Swapping calorie dense food for nutrient dense ingredients is the *ONLY way* to keep the weight off! Just google it
this is not accurate, because you are burning (and counting) many components, like fiber, which are not digested in the human body
Oo yea I agree you really do got a point there
why do news reports have to add a joke t everything & make it corny...
I am so sad cause I cant go on mic
Wicked.
Our stomach is not a flame oven. It is a stomach.
Formula for respiration (what we do with food) :
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
Formula for combustion:
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen x2 = Carbond Dioxide + Waterx2 + Energy
First distinction: A typical carbohydrate (HYDRATE) contains carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Where as any hydrocarbon does not have oxygen.
Then of course you have all the hormones and other chemicals in us, which are not used in the video.
I hate this. The poor food ):
HEAT energy....nothing more. Calories do not exist....they are a measurement outside the body.
What a waste of cheese puffs 😔
is anyone else here because of hank green
It just occured to me. They test the amount of calories in something by literally burning it with fire and reading the thermal energy it gives off.. But our bodies don't burn calorie with fire, they burn calories through complicated chemical reactions.. So i guess the question is.. The thermal energy given off from burning calories with fire is equal to the chemical energy given off through metabolism? For some reason my "Bullshitometer" is going off.
Never trusted the calorie reading.
You and me both. I'm calling bullshit.
Replying just in case someone can argue this
I also believe calories are measured by raising the temp of one liter of water one deg Celsius. Not settling food afire.
I'm watching this right now
Anyone else?

Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Our bodies do not burn our calories by throwing whatever food into our cells and then bam burn them. In fact, our body will mostly burn carbs first and fats second and protein if we don't eat for several hours. So, a calorie is not a calorie. In fact, if we eat to many carbs at one meal, our bodies will turn the extra calories into fat to keep our blood sugar normal. Our bodies want to keep our blood sugar in the normal range because high blood sugar is so damaging to all organs. Just ask any diabetic about all of the diseases caused by their high blood sugar.
From biological beings, a calorie is not a calorie, period.
