Also, Gunnar Widforss…Painter of the National Parks and one of the greatest watercolorist ever. He died of a heart attack in the 1930s while driving his car near Bright Angel camp and smashed into a tree. His gravestone is easy to overlook because it is one of the smaller ones. But a lot of times people put paint brushes by it, which makes it a little easier to spot😊 As always, a good video. Thank you!
I can't think of a better person to give me a TH-cam tour and background history of a place I've been to three times in my life. Possibly Ken Burns could do a better tour for an in-depth, Big Budget PBS TV series😄 I greatly enjoy, and look forward to, any and all of your adventures. Many thanks for all of your work to put these out here! BTW, there's an old sanitarium they are trying to preserve at Dripping Springs at the foot of the Organ Mountains in New Mexico, with other places of historic interest near by. I saw your visit to the place where Pat Garrett was killed, as well as other places of interest in this region.
That was really cool. My friend’s parents are buried there. Her mother just passed away 2023. Her father was a park ranger for the Grand Canyon and is buried there. I didn’t even know there was a cemetery until she mentioned her mother’s burial and service will be at the canyon. I think there will be more burials there, of people who already have grave sites designated for them prior to 2017.
I love this channel!! The last person buried at the pioneer cemetery at the Grand Canyon was Pansy Greer. I was her personal nurse for many years.,There is an editorial in the January 2020 Arizona Highways magazine about her and an article about her son, Ken Patrick who has a trail named after him at the North rim! Pansy was the rust telephone operator at the Canyon and her husband Slim Patrick helped build the Kaibab Trail. I love Sidetrack Adventures!!
While I have hiked the Grand Canyon from rim-to-rim two times and down the South Kaibab Trail and up the Bright Angel Trail one time, I was completely unaware of the graveyard. You did a great job bringing out the stories of those people, who worked in the Grand Canyon and who are buried in the cemetery. Thank so much for this video. I am greatly appreciate.
"Interesting" doesn't begin to describe this cemetery and the people in it. Thank you. By the way, there's a channel run by a man in Georgia called "Sidestep Adventures" who has filmed his visits to many, many old cemeteries in his area. The oldest grave he's filmed was a man who died before the United States became the United States. I had to pause and rerun the video of that grave several times and look closely at the dates. Unbelievable. If he hadn't of filmed it, I'd never have seen it. It's a privilege beyond words.
We have visited this Park many times, even rode the mules. Somehow we missed the cemetery. I enjoy reading gravestones, lots of history. Thanks for your fastidious work on your channel. Being considerably older, I appreciate that you have superior grammar skills.
I learned so much from you today. My family homesteaded Northern Arizona, and I love learning more about the state I live in. I appreciate the extensive research you must have done to make such a detailed video. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to your channel. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. Sending you and your family best wishes from Tucson😊🏜💜
Great video on the cemetery! We didn't have time to research quite as well - mostly just knew a few stories, specifically the plane crash. I love that some of the rangers are buried there. What an honor, you know? 😊
Yeah. I was thinking its too bad that they didn't tighten the requirements years ago for burial there allowing it to remain open going forward for people with extraordinary service to the park.
That area is very familiar as my family made 2 epic summer trips West, 1 including the Grand Canyon. I was overjoyed by the pine 🌲trees and the awesome scent of pine everywhere. We don’t have very many pine trees 🌲 in Kentucky where I’m from. I remember my first look over the south rim after we parked our car. It’s breathtaking! We missed the Pioneer Cemetery but I’m planning a lengthy trip out west after my shoulder replacement surgery 😢and hopefully a coast to coast cycling 🚴♀️ trip. I’m keeping track of all your excellent destinations and hope to work most of them into my travels. 🗺Thanks so much for your wonderful and informative destinations. Your channel is a real joy. 👍☮️🌞🌲🗺❤️
Steve!! I LOVE your adventures It's my passion too!! Please consider driving Old Highway 6 through Utah. Helper, Green River, Cisco and several more towns have LOTS of History. Green River specifically has many amazing tails and is now falling apart but maybe gearing up for another boom because of Lithium mining. Thanks Happy Travels!
I saw that sad documentary about the ✈️✈️✈️.air collision. First time I see or hear a cemetery at the Grand Canyon. I tow several cemetery tour guides here in America and Europe. I like old dates. Thank you for this educational video friend. Nice old cemetery and well kept. Rip 🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇵🇷🙏.
Nice video of an interesting place! Thank you for sharing. I thought the music was too loud, though; but I loved the content! Are you going to SE Arizona to Chiricahua National Monument and other places in that area?
We went on a tour and the guide pointed out the cemetery and told us about the 1956 plane crash. He also brought up another point about wreckage from other crashes that are still in the canyon. I asked about recovering the victims and wreckage and was advised its a huge risk to EMS and Law Enforcement. Some wreckage is also painted over after the investigations are over to blend in with the canyon. The Grand Canyon also has many suicides and is a challenge for authorities to recover the deceased. You got to give credit to the workers and EMS for placing themselves at risk and taking care of the canyon.
We actually only spent the day at the Grand Canyon on this trip and stayed in Flagstaff. We've stayed at the Canyon and in Tusayan before, and with the price difference and free shuttle I think Tusayan is a better deal unless you need to be at the Canyon late night/early morning for something.
@@SidetrackAdventures We're going to camp in a small trailer next visit. I don't think I can manage to go rim to rim or down into the bottom. Just hiking along the rim trail is good for me
I plan on checking that out on my next visit. I had plans to go there and the day I was going to visit the President gave a speech there (or near there) so I ended up going somewhere else. I figured there was no way the secret service was going to want me walking around exploring haha
Seeing as explorers have been exploring the GC since 1500's an natives since before that I would suspect there are a lot of people buried in the GC. I just love the people who go backpacking way back in the mountain wilderness and are convinced that they must be the first people to ever visit that place. They forgot the got there by following a marked trail. DUH. ! !

I respect that you find the places that few of us would think to visit, and we are the poorer for that.
I really liked the rustic headstones. Very interesting video. Never knew there was a cemetery there. Thanks.

A solemn and lovely place to spend eternity.

Thanks for the kind words.
Excellent narrative on a place I’ve never heard about. Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
Interesting that the KOLB gravestone has the freemason symbol on it. I love your background music. It's subtle, yet moving. Thank you.

Really nice music!
Absolutely fascinating! I'd never heard or see this. Thank you!

Thank you so much. We really appreciate it.
The Veterans Day and Memorial Day services there are small but very moving.... good video.... thanks
I will be sure and visit this cemetery next time I visit the Grand Canyon
Very very cool. Thanks for the great info.

Great video highlighting and dedicating the memories of the people of Grand Canyon! Very well done!
Thanks so much!

Great Video! Thank You for remembering all those people that seldom get a glance, they are so much a part of the Canyon.
So true!
Very interesting. Great video as usual!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, that was so interesting! All those people and their stories. The phone operator who just died this year at 104 -- that's amazing. Good video!
I was shocked to see a new grave then I saw the dates on it and was even more surprised.
Her age is amazing and so is her years of service. So fitting that she could be buried there.
Thankyou! Very interesting and educational.
Steve, you do your homeworks very, very well!...
👍👍🌺💐🌻🌸🏵👍👍
Love your work, brother. 👍👍👍

You have a knack for finding unusual places. Great video. Thanks.
Very moving.
You sir, have a great wealth of knowledge! Love your content.
Glad you enjoy it!
I somehow missed this video when you 1st uploaded. Great information! I never knew people were buried there!
Yeah, makes you wonder what other parks have a cemetery too. I know Yosemite does.
Great patient observation, always look forward to your videos~ sir
*Loved this.* 🌹🌹
Outstanding!
Coffee Stipend!
Wow, thank you very much. We really appreciate it!
Thank you!
Beautiful place
Great video. I missed it when it first posted but I have had a lot going on recently..
Thank you. I hope all is well.
good show !
Nice video of an interesting place! Thank you for sharing. I thought the music was too loud, though; but I loved the content! Are you going to SE Arizona to Chiricahua National Monument and other places in that area?
Cool Steve 😅😊
Pansy is such a cute name! Very interesting video, thank you.

Did you all camp or stay in a lodge or down in Tusayan?
We actually only spent the day at the Grand Canyon on this trip and stayed in Flagstaff. We've stayed at the Canyon and in Tusayan before, and with the price difference and free shuttle I think Tusayan is a better deal unless you need to be at the Canyon late night/early morning for something.

I've heard there are bison roaming the woods there too.
I've seen them at the North Rim.
The later burials weren't grandfathered in, they were "Grand Canyoned" in.
haha That's a good one. Wish I thought of it to use!
You didnt visit the original grand Canyon Airport south of the GC? It is an abandoned airfield
I plan on checking that out on my next visit. I had plans to go there and the day I was going to visit the President gave a speech there (or near there) so I ended up going somewhere else. I figured there was no way the secret service was going to want me walking around exploring haha
So is who buried there or not? I heard he was buried in Grant's tomb.
Interesting the markers didn’t have an epitaph.
Seeing as explorers have been exploring the GC since 1500's an natives
since before that I would suspect there are a lot of people buried in the GC.

Lovenshold
👏👍🙂🇸🇪
Why haven’t they preserved these grave stones.
Looks like a big flood made the grand canyon
Please record with the volume turned up😢
"Who's buried in Grant's Tomb?"
1. What do the Native peoples say?
2. Issue of time travel?
3. Lost and/or accidents?
Who’s buried in Grants Tomb??
Groucho Marx!
Much love as always thanks for everything you do Steve you rock big block
Well geez I must be a pretty swell place people are dying to get in there😂😂😂
Jimmy Hoffa.
I did not know this
