Long guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, big revolvers, tactical vests and more. State militias are very much like a small civilian military just without the fitness standards of the us military. This all seems completely over the top, but it's the result of some really hard lessons we learned from both WWI and WWII. It used to be that after a war was fought, we'd disband most of our military and not bother to activate those units again until we needed it again. The result was an unprepared fighting force with no combat experience and wildly outdated weapons. We'd show a lot of heart and determination, but that loss of experience, outdated tactics and equipment would cost us tens of thousands of American lives.
Never again. We'll spend lives if necessary but if you were in our shoes, wouldn't you want to spend the money to make sure more of your people made it back alive? Why would we risk losing tens of thousands of people just to appease the criticism of people who frankly know nothing of our history or country in general?
Besides, truth be told our military spending usually comes out to around 16% of our total national budget. I know people like to claim that it's above 50%, but they don't realize that they're referring to discretionary spending, what Congress votes on. The vast majority of our national budget is considered mandatory spending, which automatically gets spent because it's things people rely on like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
On top of all that, we're a counter to bad actors on the world stage. Nowadays it's China and Russia and frankly both nations have proven that if it weren't for us, they'd both be invading other nations and we all know what that leads to. We have to be prepared to fight both at the same time, with or without allies because again, it means more Americans not coming home if we don't.
We're not perfect, we don't always get it right and we can be outright malicious at times, but at the end of the day, we really are the less of two evils by a long shot. For the most part, we do leave the rest of the world alone and we're allied with countries all over the globe. Wars and conflicts still happen, but they are just a fraction of the destruction and death that used to occur.

@Anya Harrison You make a good point in that Turkey, China and other authoritarian governments are closer to Russia than they are to the Western Allied nations, but what they have is more of an alliance of convenience. It's also a very transactional relationship. Juxtapose that with the Western Allied Nations, most of us have not only fought and died for one another countless times, making this alone unique, we also have shared ancestry, cultures and traditions because America is much more embracing of new people. Don't underestimate China and India's rough past. India's people are also used to democracy, which is something they will never willingly give up. Turkey is corrupt and it's leader is an authoritarian, and I believe there is already consideration to limiting Turkey with NATO intelligence, and possibly even expulsion altogether. We'll see. India's people as a whole are much more in line with Western Democracies and cultures than Authoritarian regimes of Russia and China.

This is obviously known by US adversarial nations, and they don't want to have their own armies and civilian population destroyed even in the best of outcomes and they where to win a first strike nuclear option, what would remain for them to secure? No, the future of military conflict will be proxy wars in third world countries, be it Ukraine or the middle east, perhaps even far east less developed Asian nations like we saw in Vietnam. The US is very secret about their capabilities. The official speed of an SR-71 Blackbird was Mach 3.3, but a pilot claimed Mach 3.5. They outran missiles all the time. There are a few jets that can do mach 3, but they can't sustain it. The Blackbird could sustain mach 3 indefinitely, with fueling. By the time a SAM got a lock and fired, the Blackbird was already getting out of range. It didn't even have good stealth. It was just super fast and super high. It was in a place that nothing could touch.
The F-117 Nighthawk was still 10 square meters on radar. Meanwhile, the F-22 Raptor is 0.0001 square meters on radar at nearly 42 tons. About the size of a bumblebee or a marble. Yep. We do that.

For example, Aunt who was a high up in the chain of command for one of our submarine bases, was saying that submarine technology wise, we are about 20 yrs ahead of Russia and at least 30 yrs, if not more, ahead of China. As a matter of fact, she was saying that the China's most advanced sub is very, very loud in the water. SO much so that during one of their ( China) initial excursions with this submarine, an older U.S. submarine tailed it and they (China) had no idea because they couldn't hear ours over the noise of their own.

Here is a fun story about our carriers. We found out the hardway that they are incredibly difficult to sink. Before the Nimitz Class carriers we had a class called Kitty-Hawk Supercarriers. One of them was called the USS America which was decommissioned in 1996. It sat around for about 9 years and in 2005 somebody decided that it would be fun to try and sink it, so thats what they did. It withstood explosions above and below the water for so long they they just gave up and sent a demolition team to scuttle the ship and put it out of its misery. So, we were not even able to sink one of our own pre-nimitz carriers. Also, you guys mentioned lasers and shit in space... so we have this thing called the X--37b. It is pretty much a drone that looks like a miniature space shuttle, and while a typical drone is an unmanned aircraft, the x-37b is an unmanned space craft. We launch it into space and leave it in orbit for a few years, bring it back down, do something to it and then send it back up. Our military says that it is not a weapon and that they are just using it to test technologies that will be used in future space flights, and that is probably all they are doing with it, maybe. It could be armed and this is the US, if something can be used as a weapon our military is going to figure out how they could use it as a weapon... so the military implications are crazy. We can arm it, send it into space for years at a time and if needed we could bring it back and rearm is before sending it right back up into orbit. Our F-22s and f-35s are "air superiority" aircraft because controlling the skys is necessary to win a battle but with a fleet of like 20 x-37bs we would control the skys by default in any region at any time until some other country develops the technology to reliably take out targets in space and while some countries do have technology capable of it to some extent, doing it reliably is a different story.

The Minuteman missiles were named for our troops back in the Revolutionary War which were called the Minutemen because they had to be ready to fight at a minute's notice you guys learned about him at Concord and Lexington

Russia has never giving a public demonstration to prove that they can intercept a ICBM. So far the US is the only one to do that.

Yeah, i was gonna mention the origin of the term "minute man" but there's some really good comments on it in the comments.
Their importance in our history is also very unique. Basically Britain back in that time was like the US today. They dominated every aspect of war and the US didn't even have a standing professional Army.
The minute men for Americans represents Americas determination not to be ruled by another country. They represent freedom.

We Americans aren’t all that crazy, in general, however we can crank up the crazy and go full-blown ballistic when the need arises. Our military is the vanguard of that attitude. Ronald Reagan spoke of peace through strength and that applies not only to our military but also to our citizenry and our commitment to our allies.

we have I think it's like 330 million people in the US, and there are way more guns then people, it's almost 395 million the last I checked, and that is just the ones that are registered.

Very true. We've been stockpiling them for, well, forever - AND they're now being manufactured and sold at a record pace. Out of Stock (because of demand) is now quite common here.

I always feel like the Brits don't realize how easy the US could just take their shit if it came down to that.
