Great to see the Klamath being returned to nature. 30 years ago my GF knew a born local who took us up the river on a jet boat and it was awesome. Locals with their fishing nets catching salmon along the banks for some abundant catch. It was the same in E.Wa. at the Methow river. Pools filled with huge fish heading upstream to spawn. 25 years later I went back to the Methow Valley and didn't see any big, red salmon at all. Looking forward to see the Klamath again someday.

I've also heard a little bit about possible dam removal on the Columbia River. It would be great to see that happen! I don't know when that is happening but hopefully soon.

Taking large dams out of the Snake and Columbia is ridiculous eco terrorism and will hurt alot more people than it will help . Aboriginal interests are not more important than everyone else's.

The early eighties book "Mountain in the Clouds", the search for wild salmon, tells the story of how these dams got started 130 plus years ago, on the basis of an obscure Federal employee that "allowed" the interpretation of certain statutes. Oberlin grad. and Seattle/post/Intell. journalist. Good read and understanding how this got going; more fish VALUE was destroyed in the northwest that was created by Hydro. But you can CONTROL Hydro; fish are FREE.
Thank God we have the indigenous people in all countries to keep us all alive. Not only are they making sure there is a healthy earth for their own coming generations they are fighting to have an earth that all mankind can live in. So different from those people who are so shallow and greedy they can only think of filling their own pockets.
This country has a bad habit of jumping on new ways to make money without considering the consequences. Even at the national level there are rarely any truly long term plans or impact studies beyond a few years. Tragedies like this should not happen. My heart goes out to all the living beings in the eco systems impacted by these decisions. Imagine how much money has been spent creating the dams and removing them, though it is a drop in the bucket of profit made by corporations which benefitted from these decisions. Well so far the dam removal has killed over 1 million salmon a few million trout and other fish along with about a billion crawdads, River mussels and everything else that may have lived in the river. A true ecological disaster. The Eco system has been destroyed. All in attempt to take the water and destroy everything else upstream. The project has sacrificed the Pacific flyway killing and disrupting millions migratory birds. Communities and farmers of the Klamath basin are now facing water shortages threatening to up end life in the basin. Sadly so far the river has become hotter and inhospitable and a death zone to fish that once lived in the river some of which such as the rainbow trout had evolved the tolerate the warm Waters of the Clarence all unemployed to turn the Klamath River into a fish farm, that will not happen.
For my birthday, my wife gave me a canoe ride in a dugout with Yurok men. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. The weather was overcast and the experience was surreal. At that time they were already anticipating the damming. I want to repeat the trip. As a sidenote, I am wondering if the spelling of the river was with a 'Tl' as in Tlamath. I believe the 'Kl' was easier to spell and pronounce so it wound up becoming 'Klamath.' There are more instances in native languages across the entire stretch from Chile to the Pacific Northwest where the 'TL' digraph or sound is used: Kwakiutl, Tlingit, Atlin, Coquitlam. Follow that trend south to the Nahuatl languages and south to Chile, and you get an abundance of words with the 'tl sound like Tenochtitlan, Cuscatlan, Atitlan and so on. I wonder.

The work of removing the dams has begun, and members of the Yurok Tribe say they are hopeful that tearing down dams will begin a process of restoring the river and saving its salmon.
Except that global warming is expected to drive most salmon to extinction. But at least we will have a few more fish for a few more years. So what if removing hydroelectric power accelerates global warming, global warming is not important.
And so what did the Klamath say about the Hoopa Nation being included in this salmon renewal? All the streams going up to the plateau have their fish intercepted by the Klamath claiming ALL the fish, and using nets across ALL the streams, denying a fellow First Nation access to fish!! The biodiversity and the animals that flourished there are so life dependent upon those fish returning to their homes to spawn. It is Scientifically proven by facts that a dam removal brings back a population to recovery of wild fish. As a passionate fly fisherman and a native American, I unfortunately witnessed that moment on the Klamath River when President Bush shut down the flow of water to save it for the agricultural industry. I have never witnessed such a gross authority of power in my life , thousands and thousands of salmon, steelhead, and silvers all tragically met with death , I walked the river only to see with my eyes death of multiple generations. It was the worst thing I have ever seen. That system is a major key to life on this planet. Do not ignore the future of our fisheries, free that river, free the river , let life return, protect what you love. I feel they should shut down the all fishing for 4 to 8 years. Let those populations come back .

It was hard for me to support the Yakima Tribe and Salmon issues when I personally witnessed, as a local, piles and piles of salmon rotting in tribal peoples garages with no intention of smoking, canning etc. they just exercised their rights to Salmon quotas with no intentions of preservation for food. It was truly heart breaking to see such a waste
When these kinds of rivers are dammed, or partially diverted into canals, the river can no longer care for its people. Now that the Klamath is being restored by removing fish-blocking dams, the river can care for its people.
Removing the man made dams and restoring the natural ecosystem is an amazing development that is affecting the way that people view their surroundings and hopefully changing ideas.
I live in Klamath Falls, the start of the Klamath river. Upper Klamath sources this river. It is a fact that the Upper Klamath has had less water going into it than it has exiting it because of drought. When these dams are removed the river will lose half of its flow and will eventually dry up if drought doesn't change in the next decade. Still there will be two dams that will not be torn down at the start of the river. These may be necessary to maintain some water flow. The eco systems that are now established will be destroyed for re-establishing the old one. Good? Bad? In the end, the upper klamath is a terribly toxic watershed and will feed that into a starving river system. Can the river be turned back in time? One hopes. The dams removal is next year and we will see. I am a wait and see person with hopes but based on what we know now, we are not too hopeful for the long life of this river.
You’re so right, the source of the Klamath isn’t California. Klamath Lake and the rivers that feed into it are all part of the entire system. I live in Chiloquin, Klamath Falls and Keno back in the 70s. Fished all around the area. I remember massive fish kills on the lake in the summer when algae gets too abundant. Nobody knows what will occur as a result of this one dam being removed. What I do know is even if all the dams were removed the lakes and rivers are still compromised because we use water in our lives at every level. From drinking it to industrial and commercial uses. That’s not stopping and I’m not saying it should. We do in my view need to stop blaming people from the past for things they did. With out their blood, sweat and tears many of use wouldn’t be here enjoying the cushy life we live today.
Recent dam removals elsewhere on the Pacific coast have demonstrated that fish and pre-dam ecosystems quicky re-establish themselves. Within 5 years of removal, life and geology will come back strong.
I posted this on another video recently, but think it is worth repeating. The Klamath River restoration will never be complete without also restoring streams and beaver habitat. The beavers will store water that will replenish groundwater supplies, create ideal habitat for birds, fish, and other animals, and will provide fresh water to the river in the summer months. The removal of dams without that stream restoration will fail to improve water quality or to decrease water temperatures and algae blooms in the summertime because there will not be enough freshwater flow. The beavers are a keystone species. The rivers need them to survive.
I do know that the Karuk tribe has done some wonderful work on stream restoration that will certainly be of benefit to beavers, otters, and other wildlife, but I do not think that anyone is actively working on restoring beaver habitat along the Klamath River or its tributaries. However, there is active beaver restoration happening in other areas around the country (and world). @@Korina42
I like the idea of removing the dams on the Klamath. I use to live in Klamath Falls back in the 70s. I love the idea of letting the river do what it does without mans assistance. I don’t like everyone blaming those from the past or taking credit for things as no group can claim responsibility as many were involved in putting them in place and taking them down. They also didn’t build these with the goal to do harm and it’s easy to judge. Nobody gets it right all the time. This world is very complex and it’s easy to criticize. Unfortunately those who do should be the first to reject the benefits derived from what they oppose. None do this. So here’s to the Klamath returning to what it once was. Nature will do the hard work if we just get out of the way.

I was born in Del Norte 61 years ago I used to go up the Glen to dip net candlefish AKA Eulechon . As far as i know they are gone until they are restored also the klamath will never be whole.
I wonder how many billions of dollars it costs to replace the dams with wind power for the day and nuclear ⚛ power for night plus the desalination plants for the lost water 💦? Just think of all the global warming undamming will cause.
I am so proud of everyone involved in tearing down the Dams. At the mouth, the salmon were so thick, it was fabled that you could walk across the mouth on the backs of the salmon. Every year after the Dams, the fish dwindled. Fish shouldn't have to figure out what a fish ladder is.
I love the Klamath River. I have spent more time fishing on the trinity, but that is because that was as far as I could make it comfortably in one day's driving up from San Luis Obispo.
With only removing 4 of the 6 dams how will the water quality be improved much? Klamath Lake isn't even safe for people to swim and is regularly closed to swimming.
The 4 dams being removed play a huge part in keeping the river too warm. The many cold water tributaries below klamath lake will actually be able to cool the river down instead of flowing into 4 more warm reservoirs.
Decades to get fish runs back to where they were before these dams were built 100 plus years ago. Dams DESTROYED more value in fish than they created in electricity, but of course, fish are free: hydro you can control, and then bill for. !

One dam was removed, the other three (!) are coming out in 2024. They've been gathering thousands of pounds of seeds from native plants to repair the riverbanks. It's a process, and thankfully the folks doing it have a plan.

I just wonder how these people survived a 200+ year drought and then another 150+ year drought around 850 - 1100 AD? Surely a 200+ year drought would have either dried up the river or made it only a trickle. How did the salmons survive going for so long without water?
As seen with the Rapidan dam, these very old dams cannot be ignored. Many are silted up and no longer work as flood control. I like dams but over the last 150 years a lot of dams are obsolete and need to be dealt with.

The younger ones do not know how the river flooded when it ran wild…& the salmon are Scarce some years because the tribes at the mouth of the River are dynamite the salmon to make money from canning! everyone is hopefull, but there are no guarantees. Other rivers have been undammed and they didn't produce native trout or salmon. And so far with the release of all these sediments it has killed fish. Long run is still a 'maybe'

The govt agencies in charge of stocking hatchery salmon need to do more work. They have only focused on raising and releasing one of the 5 Pacific species, the lowest value ones in all cases, and this is having an unbalanced effect on the ecosystem. It has benefited tribes with salmon traditions (better than nothing) but in the long run causing unpredictable effects

I studied geology at Humboldt State University (now called Cal Poly Humboldt), and one of my favorite things to do was drive up to Klamath and buy smoked salmon from the indigenous people. So yummy 😋

Now they need to dredge the sediment to fully restore for the wildlife.

As far as i know they are gone until they are restored also the klamath will never be whole.
I wonder how many billions of dollars it costs to replace the dams with wind power for the day and nuclear ⚛ power for night plus the desalination plants for the lost water 💦? Just think of all the global warming undamming will cause.
I am so proud of everyone involved in tearing down the Dams. At the mouth, the salmon were so thick, it was fabled that you could walk across the mouth on the backs of the salmon. Every year after the Dams, the fish dwindled. Fish shouldn't have to figure out what a fish ladder is.
Why are they not taking out Keno Dam or Link River Dam? It being a free flowing river is a lie.
I love the Klamath River. I have spent more time fishing on the trinity, but that is because that was as far as I could make it comfortably in one day's driving up from San Luis Obispo.
With only removing 4 of the 6 dams how will the water quality be improved much? Klamath Lake isn't even safe for people to swim and is regularly closed to swimming.
The 4 dams being removed play a huge part in keeping the river too warm. The many cold water tributaries below klamath lake will actually be able to cool the river down instead of flowing into 4 more warm reservoirs.
If only they could remove all. Farmers in the basin will fight that to death.

Decades to get fish runs back to where they were before these dams were built 100 plus years ago. Dams DESTROYED more value in fish than they created in electricity, but of course, fish are free: hydro you can control, and then bill for. !

One dam was removed, the other three (!) are coming out in 2024. They've been gathering thousands of pounds of seeds from native plants to repair the riverbanks. It's a process, and thankfully the folks doing it have a plan.
The river flowing free is just the start it will take a while but it will slowly return to what it was ,
Gold mining via dredging needs to be illegal in the Klamath too.

Feed the people! Undam every river and free the land from this. All my life in the northeast I wished I could go for Atlantic salmon and shad. Whites wrote that they could take a pair of snowshoes and walk over the Susquehanna River on the backs of fish runs.
I just wonder how these people survived a 200+ year drought and then another 150+ year drought around 850 - 1100 AD? Surely a 200+ year drought would have either dried up the river or made it only a trickle. How did the salmons survive going for so long without water?

Dam haters need to go without water from reservoirs and deal with potential flooding.
As seen with the Rapidan dam, these very old dams cannot be ignored. Many are silted up and no longer work as flood control. I like dams but over the last 150 years a lot of dams are obsolete and need to be dealt with.

@@patmcbride9853 In a lot of cases, the dams are obsolete. The Rapidan dam reservoir is completely silted up. Mechanically removing the silt would be a monumental task.

well so much for water to use fighting wildfires. how much oil will be needed to replace the power this dam produced. how about drawing less water from the Co river... like the other states have done.
The younger ones do not know how the river flooded when it ran wild…& the salmon are Scarce some years because the tribes at the mouth of the River are dynamite the salmon to make money from canning! Over Use of gillnetting also contributes to the problem! When the river runs over tribal lands destroying their homes they’ll wish they had listened to the elders! To them it’s a victory over the white mans intrusions onto their lands! So be it…all that fresh water gone as most of Cal suffers from Serious droughts!

everyone is hopefull, but there are no guarantees. Other rivers have been undammed and they didn't produce native trout or salmon. And so far with the release of all these sediments it has killed fish. Long run is still a 'maybe'
You really have no idea what you're talking about do you? Well it shows! Do some more research. Read some of the scientific, peer-reviewed papers on this project. Don't believe everything you see on TH-cam and here down at the tavern.

The govt agencies in charge of stocking hatchery salmon need to do more work. They have only focused on raising and releasing one of the 5 Pacific species, the lowest value ones in all cases, and this is having an unbalanced effect on the ecosystem. It has benefited tribes with salmon traditions (better than nothing) but in the long run causing unpredictable effects

I studied geology at Humboldt State University (now called Cal Poly Humboldt), and one of my favorite things to do was drive up to Klamath and buy smoked salmon from the indigenous people. So yummy 😋
The next river to un dam should be the Columbia!
