My grandpa showed me this man when I was 5. I’m now 24 and still jamming this legends music! One of the greatest musicians of all time period. RIP Mr. Williams.

I was a young girl Mom had the radio on. When the announcement came on air he was gone I may have been first grade but Mom ans I sat and cried
My daddy was the man fishing with Hank, who wrote the first line of this song, and some of the rest. Hank would work on a song until he finished it, and Daddy said, "Hank, are you gonna fish or watch the fish swim by?" Hank said, "Damn, Vic, that's my next line!" I was little, but remember him coming home, and reaching in his pocket, and laying cash out on the kitchen table when he said this. Daddy loved Hank like a brother, and they fished a lot together and wrote songs together. Hank preferred to pay the co-writer out when he was okay with that. $50 or $100 was a lot back then. They would often wake up real early, and go to Cove Hollow Lake, stop for coffee and breakfast, and rent a little john boat. Fishing happened; the results came home for our dinner. But lots of songs born of such times together. My daddy is Songwriters Hall of Fame Member, Vic McAlpin. (1918-1981.) Hank was so talented. He could write a hit song in 15 minutes. My daddy always said, "If a song takes longer than 15 minutes to write, it's probably no damn good."

I was 17 in 1971. I'd never heard anything like Hank Williams. It struck me. The purity, the simplicity, the distillation.
I was turning 3 years old that November of 71 . I didn’t find this song until 2006-7. I was just a baby when you discovered this song. It amazes me that great songs can touch our hearts in the same way but at different years of our lives. I was born in Detroit Michigan. Where did you live when you discovered this in 1971?

I believe Hank sr. was a blues singer and he could write the most heart wrenching songs ever performed.
His voice just dripped with sadness.
He was born with a bad back,so he constantly felt pain. Plus,he was a massive alcoholic. The bottle was his devil. Constantly went through divorces because of his drinking.later in life he got addicted to pain killers that were supposed to help with his back pain. He had a really sad life when you go into the depth of it.
Recorded on Jan.9, 1950. This was Hank's second #1 hit...and it stayed on the charts for 21 weeks..and 5 weeks at #1.....CLASSIC!!!

sometimes i will hear a note, or sometimes even just a sound that suddenly brings a song to mind that i have not heard in 50 yrs. it just happened with this song. i remember my dad singing it and even though i didn't know the name, or who it was by, i still managed to find it! :)
That is awesome! I once heard George Jones, He Stopped Loving Her Today when I was a teen & suddenly had this clear memory of being a toddler hearing it at my other grandma's house who I rarely visited. Then the memories kept coming of her listening to classic country when I was a baby. Still love that old music!

Happens to me a lot.. I don't know how to go about finding the song just off of sound, alone.
But I at least try to think of a line of lyrics from it that I can Google, and I usually can find it.
Hank's sadness comes through, doesn't it? No one sings his songs any better.
A lot have sure tried, though. So sad. So touching. For years, I sang everyone of his
songs at karaoke. I found young kids did not know them. They loved them. I think
I got the most applause out of LongGone... and There's a Hole in My Bucket. Folks

My dad did some session work with The Stanley Brothers. He would break out the guitar and mandolin after dinner and play. He on guitar me on mandolin. He let me sing the refrain on this song, for some reason I could sing it smoothly without my voice breaking. Hank’s songs are more attuned to my voice than most others.

I just started to really appreciate Hank because of the shows lately on PBS, I am stunned to find out that Hank did it all... so much he had accomplished before reaching 30 years old. 1st, well for all the folks saying that this is country music and the new country music is crap, music transcends time.. by that I mean the 50s are considered classic country music, i imagine that folks that grew up to 40s country music felt the same towards the 50s and early 60s style. Now I don't judge, great entertainers will always rise to the top of their genre of music..
I am thinking how sad it is that we have lost arguably the greatest of the greats have died young due to drugs and or alcohol, I'm speaking about Prince, Jackson, Elvis, and certainly Hank Williams... when most cases it would have taken one or two of the folks charged with managing these various great entertainers to step in and say NO MORE DRUGS, NO MORE ALCOHOL and certain NO MIXING both... instead of surrounding themselves with YES folks.
Hank was pure blues .I'm as backwoods country as it gets . I also like black sabbath, zepplen the blues ,Cajun, bluegrass barn music. ,but this modern day stuff is pop fairy tale music . Your better off listening to lynryrd Skynyrd at least they are original and soulful.
