    When doing gigs in smaller clubs, often solo artists would rock up with nothing more than a cassette with backing tracks, so the ability to just connect a walkman straight to the turntable was a godsend. Particularly if the mixer was built into the furniture, or if it didn't even have line inputs at all.
    My first one was homemade, 3.5mm lead + a bunch of passive filter components + standard headshell + far too much epoxy. Looked sketchy but got me through a few gigs lol

      @chillstar 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yeah, I don't think there were many (if any) mixers that didn't have line inputs. The statement at 0:56 is incorrect- you couldn't plug anything other than turntables into the phono input, so there was never a reason to unplug the turntable. There was always (in every DJ mixer that I've ever seen- and I've seen many over the last 35+ years- from the cheapest crap to the most expensive).
      The reason that this device existed was exactly so you either A: didn't have to scrabble round the back of the mixer, half cut in the dark while a record was playing trying to find the right line input, risking accidentally messing up the wiring causing nasty buzzing or worse, or that B: the back of the mixer was simply inaccessible due to it being built in.
      This was a simple and safe option.

    • @TheRasteri
      @TheRasteri 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@chillstar There were quite a few mixers without line inputs, especially in the 80s. Even some later mixers didn't (Vestax PMC07ProISP, released in 2001).

      @@chillstar Even cheaper and simpler were RCA barrel inline adapters to reduce (attenuate) line level to phono level and some came with a dongle and a switch to alternate between the two very different output levels
      What could go wrong?
      I did one gig with vinyl ,July 4th pool party- I watched in horror as the sun melted my record-from then on it was two cassette decks- and later two SONY discmans-
      who wants to carry 6-7 crates of vinyl to and fro?

    I never seen a mixer with just strictly 2 inputs. Yes, 2 channels but you always had 2 inputs on each channel. One was for Aux/CD/Line and the other switch was for Phono, and you still had the line/phono CD. Now this would come in handy where you had the mixer flushed down into the table. These set ups were really nice to look at but many a DJ spilled a drink only to watch its liquid contents just gravitate right into the mixer. In many of these set ups, you would have what I call a "band" mixer with multiple channels that the DJ mixer would be patched into. Great video.

    Secretly I was hoping for the device to contain an actual MM or MC cartridge, connected to a little lever instead of a needle. That lever would have a magnet at it's tip which would sit inside two perpendicular coils that are fed by the L+R and L-R line input signal. That way you could have all the mechanical distortion and subpar crosstalk suppression of a proper record player too. Then all we'd need to find would be a way to add some wow and flutter and THAT would be the good sound of vinyl from any source.

I'm not entirely sure that I'd want to rely on this switching from the line input to a phono cartridge and back in a club setting. But i guess with one of those use cases you indicated it might be your only option, however mixing boards like the one you show have separate inputs for line level and a switch to switch to them already.

    Uhm, ALL 2ch mixer have a line input and switch. Why do you need this? I owned several console set ups. I just added and input and or adapter for the extra mic input(s). That’s notwithstanding console turntables largely didn’t take standard 1/2” head shell. The cartridge is not what makes “vinyl sound”. Mastering and cutting of the lacquer master for plating, then pressing is what makes vinyl sound.

      some consoles in the 90s / early 00s you couldn't get to the line level input in the back even if the mix had it so it has a niche purpose.

    Pretty sure you could turn the turntable off even.
    The signal still goes through as always.
    What a funny item.

    For DJs when this adapter came out it was pretty much useless in the early 90s Gemini and Radioshack where selling 3 to 5 channnel mixers with the flip switches there were really 6 to 10 channel. I have a Gemini PS-525 channels with the flip switches came out in 1997 and a Radioshack SSM-1750 4 channel with the flip switches came out in 2000. I use the Radioshack mixer with my internet radio station Phat Beats Radio.

    always good to hear flourish.mid. interesting device, not sure if swapping it constantly would be more detrimental to the turntable's arm connector than just swapping cables on your console (if possible)

    Why didn’t they make an interface box (with a passive RIAA network) that connected to the mixer input. This would have two switchable inputs: selecting either the turntable’s RCA line or the auxiliary line source. This alternative approach wouldn’t require you to remove the headshell and risk damaging the cartridge or stylus.

    Ay up, don't be dissing my plastic belt driven turntables! 🤣🤣 Citronic CL-12 anyone? 😁 I had a couple of matchbox sized boxes that did the same thing back in the late 90's - they had phono(RCA) in and out rather than connecting direct to the headshell.
