TH-cam doesn't always make great suggestions ... but tonight, it did :) I'm an Oregonian, and I used to take our trees for granted, but over the past few years I've really taken an eye to them. My interest has blossomed into an amateur bonsai hobby and now I'm constantly on the lookout. It didn't take me long to make it to your storefront after seeing your videos! I said I would stop for the season, but I can't help it, haha. It's clear how much love goes into your trees. I was really impressed by the individual attention given to the grafts. I went ahead and subscribed and I'm looking forward to more!

Thank you for this video. It answered 2 questions that I was looking for which I couldn't find anywhere else. 1. Why composted bark and not fresh(good to know that six months is enough) 2. Why not pot up to a much bigger pot? This is a really helpful channel for people who are new to container gardening(for trees). I am more used to planting in the landscape.
We just published a second video on container gardening. You can pot smaller trees in pots. Having good drainage is the key to success if you want to do that add lava rock or some other type of small gravel at the bottom and add more perlite or pumice to your bark media for better drainage. Pretty awesome collection of conifers. Question is would it be a good idea to add maybe some moss on those containers to sorta make it look like a bonsai or just top it off with some type of mulch. Thanks!

Question, I just purchased an umbrella pine in a #2 pot and I want to grow it in a container for the first couple of years, living in the northeast (NY) do I need to protect it in anyway during the winter? Should I bring it inside or will it be okay in a pot outside all winter?
Check your cold hardiness zone and then check the cold hardiness of umbrella pines. You can bring your tree into a more protected place like your garage for a week or two, maybe longer if it is really cold. Great question. I may do a video about that soon.
Is the process you just did if the first tree was to make it into a bonsai?
i have several redwoods (abt 2 years old) & they are getting rather tall. if i keep trimming the roots, would they do well in a pot?
You can certainly grow them in pots, following the technique used with all potted conifers.
So I’m assuming you use forgery size wood particles and pumice? That’s all? No nutrients? I’m looking to pot up my pencil holly and I’m not sure what kind of soil mix to use. I found this video, but I’m not quite sure I heard you correctly on the ingredients for the soul since I heard no nutrients
Sawing like that is not going to shock the plant ?
Can pine be propogated theough cutting?

I am not a bonsai artist, but have lots of friends who are.
#800 Do I get a prize? Maybe pick a tree. I'm just starting my bonsai journey and glad I found your channel i watch a lot of Peter Chan videos. I especially love conifers pines do really well where I'm at eastern NC. I was able 2 find an old Christmas tree farmer who had a lot of knowledge and interesting conifers. He also given me the opportunity to try n dig up an 20 or 30 year old pinus sylvestris beuvronensis with a 7 or 8 in trunk that's only 4 ft tall. I plan trying to prune the roots at least season or maybe till next year. Before I even think about ball and burlappig it. Any help or wise advice would be appreciated. happy new year

That little tree didn’t like having it’s roots butchered in half ... You are creating a Bonzai tree .
