Terry O’Neil, Gary Spiers, Pete McDowell are the living proof for the effectiveness of REAL karate (not the cut-off competition point version). Anyone who doubts that, take a look at the videos of these guys and see what they can do. It is absolutely lethal. Huge respect for these pioneers. Osu!

Frank is an unbelievable martial artist BUT Terry and Gary were proven on the street so HUGE difference mate . Could Frank Brennan win in a street fight 💯NO DOUBT but I don’t think he’s ever had a street fight as he 🤷🏽. Gary and Terry had thousands of altercations on the door over their many years working them and probably over a thousand KOs between them in real fights . That puts them in an ENTIRELY different league as hard men as there are no rules on the street . You can loose your liberty ( go to jail ) or even your life on the pavement arena BIG difference to a dojo hard man mate !!!!

Interesting - never seen film of Gary before..They both worked on the door of The Banyan Tree at the same time for a couple of years during the early-mid 70's, a couple of months after Terry brought Gary (who told me he was half Maori BTW - and that his mum was an Irish nurse) over from Japan where he was living at the time.. This was during the period where Gary first starting running dojos and Terry has his knee-cap severely damaged in an international match (I think it might have been in Belgium) that essentially stopped him fighting competitively

There was many great exponants of martial arts in almost every town n city..lots were door supervisors or heavies..some were over zelous bullies..every dog has there day..but the story inevitantly ends the same they grow older they mellow and strive for a quiet life hoping there past doesn.t catch them up...as a OAP myself worked the clubs in the West End of London been involved in martial arts since 14 various styles achieving 6 Dans..having trained with the best and worked with the supposedly hardest men also connections to the most notorious so called gangsters from the 60.s theres always one outcome...we all grow old live on our memories and end up in a box..one way or another were all a product of circumstances and sometimes the hype around you drowns you in your own ego.😮

Gary Spiers had wrestling training and just about any Martial Art as he took what he felt was most effective for street situations. He was a bodyguard and bouncer in several different countries. I train in BJJ and I highly doubt someone with 1 year of training would have done anything to Gary Spiers in a street situation, also a lot of BJJ guys have terrible takedowns.
