Wow. Just incredible. Look how nice everything looked. This is just an absolute trip back in time for me. I would have been 8 years old, riding these very same trains with my parents. It's incredible that this reflects exactly how I remember it being, not all that different from today and yet it seems like a whole other world. Thanks to those who took the time to film this and to share it. Simply amazing.
This was so great to see. So nice to see everything before the vandalism and drug use has taken over. Really cool to see that 75st/Fort Road (now Wayne Gretzky Drive) was still at-grade with the LRT tracks. This was before the Grant Moellmann Bridge was constructed. Also really cool to see the remnants of the CN rail tracks that ran along side even west of 95st into downtown. This was before they were ripped up and replaced with the multi-use bike trail which we still have today, unfortunately riddled with the above mentioned issues. Your channel is spectacular by the way. Nice to see you here sharing these memories as well. My parents raised me in Clareview, so the LRT was a huge part of my life. Once I got old enough to explore on my own, West Edmonton Mall became my second life. Thanks for your documentation!
Idk why they play that tone on and off when the train arrives in calgary we only hear it once when it’s announcing the next stop and then once more when you arrive
This takes me way back to my childhood, riding the LRT across the city just for fun. Thank you very much for uploading this gem of a video! (We should go for coffee some time!)
Here's an absolutely useless bit of trivia for you... Four days before this was filmed, Metallica performed in Edmonton at the Coliseum. Their self-titled "black album" was making waves at the time. Must have been a great time to be a fan; they're one of my all time faves! 🤘
And yet, platforms were designed to accommodate at least 5! Whereas now we have the line to NAIT and NAIT's station can only accommodate 3. Meanwhile they can't arrive more frequently than 5 minutes on this line because they've designed too many street crossings into the southside extension, and stations like Century Park are too small to accommodate existing passenger loads anyway (so they get super crowded and jammed up at the escalators during rush hour).
the lrt looked different back then this must have been when cn rail still occupied the old rail yard in down town and before belvedere and clareview was replaced
While I think the newer cars are more advanced and therefore obviously better. I always liked the older styled cars more. They kinda resemble the ETS Busses in a sense and its so unique :) I VERY VERY rarely ever see those types of cars anymore its always the newer cars that are used :/
Ohhh boy do I miss these days when you could walk into a nice clean and fresh LRT station whether it was a downtown one or even coliseum and not have to see homeless, screaming and acting stupid or trash sprewn about and when you see a cleaner doing a station it's far and few between and it always seems to be an Immigrant that walks slower that a slug and can't even pull their heads out of their butts if their life depended on it much less clean anything....I could do a 100 laps before these people could even pull a broom out of the cleaning cart once. Those were the days of care and concern of these iconic times and stations and I MISS THEM DEARLY.
Amazing how they only used a couple cars, and yet, platforms were designed to accommodate at least 5! Future capacity planning in action. Whereas now we have the line to NAIT and NAIT's station can only accommodate 3. Meanwhile they can't arrive more frequently than 5 minutes because they've designed too many street crossings into the southside extension, and stations like Century Park are too small to accommodate existing passenger loads anyway (so they get super crowded and jammed up at the escalators during rush hour). What happened to capacity planning?
Both Belevedere and Clareview could only take 3 cars when they were first built, but they were built with the expectation of expansion to 5 car capacity.
Somewhat coincidentally the U2 cars were designed to run in multiples up to 5 cars. Fire marshals therefore required that subway stations be built to handle evacuation of two crush loaded 5x car trains.
I mostly take the train from Churchill to NAIT or NAIT to Central but I have ridden both lines for fun and will hopefully be one of the first passengers on the new line opening early next year. Churchill doesn't look too much different now than it did back then.

Hi Best Edmonton Mall!!!!!!
That's amazing. What a blast from the past!!
think l skipped school more then a few times...
Sometimes I like riding the LRT across the city just for the fun of it! 😊

0:59 I love the old door chime sound
Anyone else miss the old door closing/ depature time tone before the changed it? I do in a way
Idk why they play that tone on and off when the train arrives in calgary we only hear it once when it’s announcing the next stop and then once more when you arrive
and "Grandin Station, Government Centre: proof of payment is required beyond this station." (same going north of Churchill station).
I think they changed it sometime in the early 2000s, around 2004.
I liked that tone
I forgot not just the look but the sounds especially. Thanks for uploading the memory.
Churchill station looked really futuristic for 1992, in a way still does
This takes me way back to my childhood, riding the LRT across the city just for fun. Thank you very much for uploading this gem of a video! (We should go for coffee some time!)
I remember take the lrt with my mom when i was 2 or 3 is was amazing experience she kept pointing out the window say look baby

Sucks I wasn’t born to see that. 😤
I'd HAPPILY live with the awful Muzak for something this clean and safe in Edmonton!
Fun fact here we still use afew of those old trains they have just renovated the interiors because Edmontians wanted to keep abit of our history alive
I thought all the old trains were all gone
@@andrewmah2962Nope. The city is in the planing stage to replace them. I believe starting in 2028.
Never knew the stations had music.
Its cool to see the old CN tracks that aren't there anymore heading into downtown.
Nice video. We rode it growing up in the 80s.
It's still pretty much the same today except for some very minor aesthetic and tech changes.
Human poops and urine
@@levyan4718 yep, all the LRT stations have now been allowed to be homeless shelters
Funny to see the trains running with just 1 or 2 cars
Now today thay use 3 to 5 cars

The doors open before the train stops! Now they don't!
Because people like to push others off
There was only one line from Claireview to University, the University LRT station opened in September 1992
I remember that. I was born in 1986, so I would have been 6 when this was taken
I was 29 back then. Good memories.
LOL, the old door chimes on the U2s!
Yes that soft female voice announcing the stops was very beautiful! 😊😊
I didn't know central station used to be green not pink. I was just filming there the other day during a service delay.
Central station was green?!
I didn't know that
Wait no I think it was just the camera, its old
That was Churchill
the lrt looked different back then this must have been when cn rail still occupied the old rail yard in down town and before belvedere and clareview was replaced
And Edmonton still had trolley buses. :)
I miss the vintage LRT from almost 20 years ago with that soft female voice announcing the names of each station. 😌
0:28 Wait wait, Is it just me or is there music playing in the station?
There is
Wow, I wish it could still be there
@@chrlzislime yeah me too so much has changed
so i aww of this as l could ride on all day
Glorious Edmonton konstruction, carry on comrades
What does this mean
I grew up on the Edmonton transit system and was a kid when this was shot. Nice memories:-)
great flash back . too bad no shots of the old belvedeer station
"Belvedere"
Wondering if anyone could upload a video of the old Clareview/Belvedere stations before their renovations. There aren’t any uploaded online.
I appreciate this walk down Memory Lane however, it's pretty sad Edmonton has only built 9 stations since 1992 😑😑🙄🙄🙄lol
The good news, the city has built 12 more.
The bad news, they're all half filled with piss n shit.
soon there will be 27 more
So was the last stop on the line Grandin? When was university station built?
University station opened in August 1992, so this video was taken just a few months before.
How often would trains run on peak hours?
Cool video, thanks for sharing!
We need a petition to bring back that old chime before the train starts moving
While I think the newer cars are more advanced and therefore obviously better. I always liked the older styled cars more. They kinda resemble the ETS Busses in a sense and its so unique :)

Valley LRT would be jealous if they see this video :))
Were are Belvedere and Clareview stations?
Ohhh boy do I miss these days when you could walk into a nice clean and fresh LRT station whether it was a downtown one or even coliseum and not have to see homeless, screaming and acting stupid or trash sprewn about and when you see a cleaner doing a station it's far and few between and it always seems to be an Immigrant that walks slower that a slug and can't even pull their heads out of their butts if their life depended on it much less clean anything....I could do a 100 laps before these people could even pull a broom out of the cleaning cart once. I was 6 when this was recorded. :O
Belvedere was my old station. I haven't been back there in like 20 years!
Wow I rode on car 1032 today XD
Time lapse for me backwards going forward, space training stp? John.
What year did the series 8’s show up?

David Yup the original stations were so well built and planned. They definitely did plan for the future to accommodate 5 cars for a bigger population.
When they finally build the line northwest from NAIT, there will be a new station built.
Yeah but by building underground and making bigger stations it used up more money and therefore Calgary has a bigger network.
That baby crying is probably an adult now 2:58
Baby crying was probably me I was 16 months old and my parents lived in clareview lol
@clarkesuperman oh cool lol
That was great, it brought me back. Thanks
Love that station musix
That 1990s scheme was so cool, I dunno why they removed it.
1:11 soooooooooo smooth
It's like the London Underground. Very cool.

still waiting for that new line
Very soon
why'd they stop playing music in the first place
Crackheads
I like how the stations don't have human feces and aren't littered with overdosing junkies.
Was 24 in 1992
I was 3 years old
they actually played music?! I'm going to ask my husband uh NOW
Why is this funny to me. Who’s watching this in 2018

No!....social distancing here.....in 92. No such a thing....back then. O'my....how the world has changed in some 30 years of this filming.
Woooo
Hi
People are stabbed and beaten almost daily on those trains today.
What a difference 30 years makes.
Good times. No one was getting stabbed, beaten or robbed. Or tweakers living and doing drugs in the stations. It's 2022 now. Damn !! 30 yrs ago 🤣🤣
This light metro is similar to one in Belgium which grew out of an older tram network th-cam.com/video/ZgkBe1XxzAw/w-d-xo.html

Wow, sure is a different world without all the homeless and drug addicts around... Almost too good to be true compared to nowadays...

Hilarious!! Piping muzak underground might be okay, but o u t d o o r s ? Boy! Canadia/ens were even *fucking* weirder than nowadays..oh well.
Pre CrackChill station
now it's a mobile homeless shelter
