Thanks again Ed. I have just bought LR6 I'm a complete novice to the software and despite reading stuff elsewhere I was struggling to understand not only how to use it but what it actually meant. Great videos , really helpful stuff. Zaf
PIC, you have a very helpful, lucid, concise, easy to understand way of teaching w/ a humor added in to relieve stress ! Being southern, I do find myself trying to keep up w/ your speed .......... thank God for the pause function ! lol Thank you !! Regarding the part on Folders (left panel) : I believe you mentioned these folders are a LR's representation of folders in your computers hard drive. So, I imagine that LR is reading your hard drive and pulling up image folders "automatically", but, LR does not save these folders anywhere in the LR catalog "automatically". Rather, any images in the hard drive folders that you want to save in LR's catalog will have to be saved manually by you ! 1.) Correct any misunderstandings I have in the previous paragraph here please. I may have many different types of images, on my SD Card, that I can not view (CR2) in WPV (Windows Photo Viewer). In this case, I have 4 digit #'s depicting the image file and would not necessarily know which ones I'd like to assign a label or folder for, like Portrait, Landscape, Beach, Wildlife, etc ... ! 2.) Do I need to open my CR2 files from the SD Card in LR and then make folders on my hard drive to be labeled and filled by the images I can now see in LR? These new image files (RAW DNG's), assigned to labeled folders on my computer hard drive would still be unable to open in WPV. 3.) Is it necessary to store them in newly assigned folders on my hard drive or should I now, in LR, create assigned folders in the LR catalog for storage of all my images and just back the catalog up on my hard drive, an external hard drive and/or cloud ? I also need to know how to create and organize folders in LR Catalog, as well as (export/import?) images into the LR Catalog. 4.) Is there a link you could suggest for video tutorials on this or any of the previous questions ? Thanks again for your generous and considerate sharing of LR lessons, Steph_Louisiana
Hey I absolutely love your channel. I was wondering if there is any way you could put together a list of the keyboard short cuts you like using in lightroom. I'm looking for something to print off and laminate and keep with me on the go incase I forget about a short cut. Thanks for your time. Have a great day
02:06 please Ed can you explain the difference between the library filmstrip effect at the base of the screen and Adobe Bridge CC, which I vaguely understand has a similar use. For from what you show here in this video, I wonder if Bridge is necessary? I look forward to your reply, Thanks and regards, Joe.
I don't use bridge at all. I tried it once but could not find a purpose for it. lightroom does all the file management, raw edits and send to photoshop easily too. The filmstrip in Lightroom is just a view of all the photos in the selected folder or collection. That is all. You can refine it using star ratings and color codes too if you like. but that it. just an overview of the images.
Happy you enjoyed this lightroom library module tutorial. Ok so that image was editing using a filmic style.. I have a tutorial on how to do this on my channel.
+Sebastien Abrasion I am happy you like my channel style, I just want to give great photography tutorials whilst keeping tone light. I hope you are having a great end to 2015
+Vinny Minchillo Happy you like this lightroom CC on how to use the library module. This is so important and getting the correct workflow will help a lot. Check out this video I have for that. th-cam.com/video/oDtvVoRmwOg/w-d-xo.html Good look with all things lightroom
Hi, thanks so much for these Lightroom tutorials! Your tutorials are the only ones i've been able to understand thus far. Quick question, is it absolutely necessary for me to add a metadata tag to my photos, especially if i'll be adding these photos to my blog. Thoughts? Let me know - thanks!
+Jessika Garcia I think it is always a great idea to add metadata to all your photos. having keywords and all of those things are not necessary but basic metadata like name cowrite and a way of contacting you is a great idea. The best thing to do is create a preset with this information and then just add this when you import the photos. this means any time you report any image it will already have all the correct information. Do the job once and you're done. I hope this helped you in learning lightroom. Your kind words about my photography tutorials really do go a long way so thank you and good luck.
Hello thanks for your tutorial, im beginning with Lightroom and this video is very helpful, just one question, when you import photos do you have to select copy or add? and whats the difference, thanks!!!
+joe nick not entirely know what you mean by collection topic. Basically the library contains your images. The develop module allows you to edit them. You will not see duplicates as you edit though and on your hard drive you will only see the original file. The edits are stored inside the lightroom file. To actually have the edits in the file you must export the photos. i hope this helped you in you lightroom edits.
+Photos In Color: Hi Ed, I understand the original file can be on an external hard drive, but can the lightroom files you mention here be saved to lightroom but not be physically on the drive Lightroom is loaded on, please? I look forward to your reply, thanks and regards, Joe
This is a good explanation the Lightroom catalog. I am one of those confused by Lightroom, so I don't use it. I use Bridge and put my Meta Data in that. One thing I don't like about Lightroom is you cannot save an image in it. There is only import and export which is confusing. I use Adobe RAW before I go into Photoshop, it seems to do everything that Lightroom does, so I stick with Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. Every time I go into Lightroom to look for an image I have to export them in the collection to find them. Lightroom always confuses me, but I wish I knew how to use it. Can it give me something that Bridge and Camera RAW can't?
I have the Adobe Photography CC package which includes Lightroom CC. I haven't used it much yet, but it looks like just what I need to organize the thousands of photos I have - both digital and scanned from film. I have the Photoshop / Lightroom package on 2 computers (one desktop, one laptop). Does Lightroom have a function to copy the information from one computer to the other? for instance If I set up my libraries, metadata presets, edits, file locations, etc on the desktop, can that info be copied to the laptop so I don't have to enter it all manually on the laptop? Thanks!
Great tutorial! simply and helpfull! i have a question, sometime i see differences in colors between the picture in the library module and develop module. What's happens? Also during the develop module I press F for full screen and the colors from the develop module. But exporting i have no problem.
+Jesus Rojas Thaks for getting in touch and so happy you enjoyed this turoail on lightroom library module. Make sure you do not have soft proofing turned on as this can cage the colors (\). The images are rendered slightly different in the two modules, develop will be more accurate because that is where it is important, library is all about organising, exporting and quickly moving through you catalogue. i have not noticed any differences but that is my guess for you. Please let m know if you resolve this and what you did as I would love to knkow.
+Joe Beard Yes they are different as the keyboards are slightly different. As A rule if its 'Command' on a mac then its 'Control' an a PC and if its 'Option' on a mac then thats 'Alt' on a PC. This is not always the case but almost always this is going work for you... i hope this helped and you are enjoying my Lightroom tutorials.
Hi Ed Just been watching your videos on TH-cam, which have been some of the best I have seen. I have 2 questions that I would like your advice on please. I shoot with a Nikon D610 & Sony RX 100 iii. I now shoot all my images in raw on both cameras. I’m trying to reduce the amount of data in my storage space, so I thought I would remove all my jpeg, duplicate files. (I used to shoot combined Raw & jpeg files). I’m a bit anxious that I am not doing this process properly, as I am clicking on each jpeg file to delete it, then I keep seeing the same image with a message that says "jpeg WithAdjustments"! I dont want to destroy valuable information by deleting these files, but at the same time I want to clean up my Library before it become a big issue. I only purchased Lightroom & Photoshop a couple a weeks ago, having moved eventually, from Aperture! 1. Is there an easier way to delete these jpeg files. I cant seem to separate the Raw from the jpeg, to delete them easily? 2. Do I need to keep jpeg WithAdjustment files? Kindest Regards Robert
Hi loving your tutorials. I am an event photographer and will take approx 1500 to 2000 photographs in one event on one day They are all dogs btw. The next saturday I will do the same thing and so on. So my question is Should I create a new catalog for each event? or have One catalog for all similar events in say a single year. The reason for the question is because I read somewhere! that you should keep below a certain number of images in a .............. can't remember what the container was! but seem to remember that the number was 15000 so that LR keeps running smoothly.
Thats great that you are enjoying my tutorials and watching them. Yes the keyboard controls are the same. You just have to switch the keys. Basic rule of thumb, if i say option you hit Alt, if i say command you hit control. Simple.
Hi Ed, just curious ... please advise if subscribers to ongoing Lightroom CC, have to be online to use it the program? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks and regards, Joe
+Joe Beard thats a great question... its my understanding that you only need to sign in once every 30 days to keep the software activated for offline use. also you can have 2 computers active on once account for lightroom CC. Obviously to update you will need to connect as well. i hope this answered your Lightroom CC question. and good luck with you editing.
+Photos In Color Thanks for the info Ed, do you know if Photoshop also needs a 30 day sign in, please? I have just bought a good paperback/e-book on Lightroom and there seems to be several on Photoshop so many it is hard to know which and I wonder if you can comment either here or by personal email on one you have come across for version 6 CC without of course endorsing or recommending, please? I much prefer paperback etc books to e-books and have downloaded Adobe's free ones as well as shortcut charts for both programs. Thanks for all your kind help and I look forward to hearing from you, regards, Joe
Hy. Thanks for the tutorial. I just have one question. Will Lightroom leave the files in the folders or will it import them in it's own folders? I don't want Lightroom to mess around with my system...😀 Thanks
Pep Reo Hey..... That all depends on how you import them. If you want them to stay where they are then when you select the folder to import look at the very top of the import box. You will see a number of options 'Copy' 'move' 'add' - COPY - Leaves your photo where it is but make a duplicate in the lightroom folder you choose - MOVE- Removes the originals from the folder and adds them to the new folder you select - ADD - Leaves them where they are and uses these as the source files for edits. Just remember that Lightroom won't actually make edits to your photos. When you export they will be new files with the edits. The originals ALWAYS stay original. I hope this helped.
Hey man! Question - How do I go about importing pictures from my "Photos" app on a Mac? Looks like its only pulling storage from my SD card (i ejected this and it still was only showing these photos)
Hi :) could u help me please! when I opened the library and I choosed one picture what I want to use develop section , I lost my colourful picture ,was as a shot , and now looks something grey thing.... :( Why doing this? and what is the fault or something (ON ),in the preferences?? Thank u very much!! I really hope u understanding somehow!
not really sure. not really sure why i have the twang sound either hahaha. i guess i just like to be a little silly. happy you are learning from my lightroom tutorial
Ok. Lightroom is saying that you a,ready have the images in your catalogue therefor there is no need to reimport them.
