If you've ever lost someone you loved deeply, then you can relate to 'he took my last chance of happiness' and 'I want him to hurt'. Until you go through a grieving and healing process, that is indeed what it feels like.
LOVE this song!!!! I saw the Movie years ago and again recently. Ileana Douglas is a revelation, she should be a BIG as well as Kristen Vigard. Both are so talented!!!!
Simple, poignant, stirring. More emotional than any other version I've heard. Timeless. Deserving of a Grammy, or at least preserved in Congressional Library, as should every Bacharach song.
Work of perfection...stunning singer meets brilliant song. Costello & Bacharach outdid themselves. But, bloody hell, what a great voice! Great movie its from also...!
Outstanding song from a perfect film. When I saw the film, the audience applauded at the end of this song! This version is the best. The Elvis Costello version is no-where near this for raw emotion and power. Such a shame this version isn't on the CD.
. You *can* get it on a CD called "Love Scene--Romantic Movie Music" that is available through Amazon and other chains. As far as I know that's the only place Kristen Vigard's version is in print.
Lovely song....my favourite scene in the whole film.....Kirsten's raw, sweet voice and the Illeana's passion and pain in interpretation....wish the scene was available.
This song is one of those movie Jems that can't be forgotten. The raw emotion she Pours into it breaks my heart and at the same time, lifts me up. I will always love this song. Thank you Thank you for posting it.
This is one of the great songs specifically written for the soundtrack of the movie Grace Of My Heart. Amazing song writers like Joni Mitchell, Lesley Gore, J. Mascus and more. Although it's still an awesome version, the CD actually has it's writers, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach doing this song. I recommend it highly.
In all due respect to EC and BB, it's still inexplicable that only their version made the soundtrack. WTF? Illeana's version is pivotal to whole movie. Why not do an Oz soundtrack and have someone but Judy sing over the rainbow?
I'm glad this exists because it's a wonderful version, even though it's not Illeana Douglas who is shown singing it in the scene. The next scene is a fully orchestrated version with background harmony on the vocal. I'd really like to hear that. Ironically, in the movie the song is a flop!
I have always thought this version was better than Elvis Costello singing it. This lady really pulls the emotion up. It is the version from the movie. Strangely, her voice is very close to Illeana Douglas' speaking voice. They got an almost perfect match on that and I can see why people would assume it's the actress singing it.
This makes the hair on my arms stand up. I just had a look at the Daniel Lingstrom version and he doesn't give it feeling like Kristen. She sings it like she's lived it.
15 Years later I still start to cry For me its the best Version of this wonderful work. I love the film as well. Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach thank you and Kirsten thank you so much Love and Peace
Of course, you are right about that, long-run. But in the immediate wake of someting that truly breaks a person's heart, these lyrics are really very accurate. I especially think "I"m only human, I want him to hurt" is very raw.
Now I have nothing So God give me strength 'Cause I'm weak in her wake And if I'm strong I might still break And I don't have anything to share That I won't throw away into the air That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God give me strength I can't hold on to her God give me strength When the phone doesn't ring And I'm lost in imagining Everything that kind of love is worth As I tumble back down to the earth That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God if she'd grant me her indulgence and decline I might as well Wipe her from my memory Fracture the spell As she becomes my enemy Maybe I was washed out Like a lip-print on his shirt See, I'm only human I want him to hurt I want him I want him to hurt Since I lost the power to pretend That there could ever be a happy ending That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God give me strength
Touches your soul, and lets you know that its ok to have the bitter thoughts. Then the good in you can wipe away your pain. We all have do you choose to use it.
When I saw the movie years ago, I turned to my friend and said, this is definitely a Bacharach tune...but the lyrics...those are Elvis Costello lyrics. *pats self on back* One of my favorite songs.
You are a very strong person, which is admirable. Not everyone faces heartbreak with such strngth. Therefore, see call for it from other sources. Good for you, to be so strong in who you are! Compassion to those who aren't there, yet.
In the film, he directs the orchestra and the recording has the 'wall of sound' but I'm not sure if there is a recording out there to buy. Worth a look.
I loooooooove the movie Grace of My Heart (which is where this song is from) I finally tracked down the soudntrack, and it had the Inglebert Humperdink version of this song, not Kristen's.. I was so sad!!! thankyou for this!
Really sad-how people opine on the "best version" of this brilliantly composed song.Everyone has an opinion about what is best-except artists.Wonderful tune-wonderfully done:again.
Thanks very much for your information! I wish I had bought the earlier version of the 'Grace Of My Heart' soundtrack. Still, this is helpful, thanks again.
Great voice - she is an alto with a second soprano range. I am used to the Elvis Costello version and the phrasing here is a bit too clipped - I like Elvis' phrasing better. Great ending and she really sounds great on the higher notes. Very rich voice.
You should check your facts too. Burt Bacarach and Elvis Costello wrote this song together over the phone. Costello in Dublin and Bacharach in LA. It clearly has Bacharach's sound...listen to 60's music by Dionne Warwick to hear similar tunes. The lyrics go both ways dependent on who is singing it.
Beautiful song by Burt Bacharach I love Elvis Costello’s version too but the movie (Grace Of My Heart) was very weird & very very loosely based on real people & situations. Great song by a master of song writers!
Loee this piano accompaniment but wasn't there a grandiose version supposedly with her singing with a full orchestra a la Phil Spector? Is there such a version. If so, would love to hear it.
I will never understand why this version is not included in the soundtrack....when I bought the cd I was so disappointed.
So was I, glad to finally find this version again, though the Elvis Costello is beautiful too, J I love that song, and the movie too
I can never listen to this version enough. Great movie and incredible performance. The lyrics and the melody always make me tear up.
If you've ever lost someone you loved deeply, then you can relate to 'he took my last chance of happiness' and 'I want him to hurt'. Until you go through a grieving and healing process, that is indeed what it feels like.
The song "A Boat On The Sea", also by Kristen Vigard, also from this film, is my favourite. So beautiful.
LOVE this song!!!! I saw the Movie years ago and again recently. Ileana Douglas is a revelation, she should be a BIG as well as Kristen Vigard. Both are so talented!!!!
I watched it last night on DVD. Beautiful film. Beautiful songs. Beautiful performance by the leading lady xx
Simple, poignant, stirring. More emotional than any other version I've heard. Timeless. Deserving of a Grammy, or at least preserved in Congressional Library, as should every Bacharach song.
D.A. DuFur I sooooooo agree.
Darrin DuFur
Should’ve won an Oscar.
I have been a lifelong Elvis Costello fanatic but this is by far the version that I love best . Beaty filled song .And great movie .
Work of perfection...stunning singer meets brilliant song. Costello & Bacharach outdid themselves. But, bloody hell, what a great voice! Great movie its from also...!
The greatest version of this song ever. Period.
One of the greatest songs ever written and one of the best performances.
My absolute favourite version of this song.... Love the movie too (Grace of My Heart)
Great film!
Love all of film 🎥 so very spiritual 💓
Outstanding song from a perfect film. When I saw the film, the audience applauded at the end of this song! This version is the best. The Elvis Costello version is no-where near this for raw emotion and power. Such a shame this version isn't on the CD.

This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!
Lovely song....my favourite scene in the whole film.....Kirsten's raw, sweet voice and the Illeana's passion and pain in interpretation....wish the scene was available.
My favorite rendition...absolutely beautiful song.
This is the version I have been looking for. Thanks. Excellent.

Best rendition by far,great emotion!
This song is a prayer 🙏
This was my prayer song after my ex abandonden me.
I promise it gets easier and your life will be better!
Hang in there 🙏
Mine was Fool to Cry when my marriage ended. Things always get better.
Thank Kristen and Burt Bacharach. To love and childhood. 1973. Lost Horizon.....
It's the 21st of February 2023. Still, listening.💞💞💞
This is a deep song.
I will always love this song.
Fantastic voice. What a terrific song.

Although it's still an awesome version, the CD actually has it's writers, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach doing this song. I recommend it highly.
I was amazed at the incredible lip syncing by Eleana Douglas. I thought it was she singing.
In all due respect to EC and BB, it's still inexplicable that only their version made the soundtrack. WTF? Illeana's version is pivotal to whole movie. Why not do an Oz soundtrack and have someone but Judy sing over the rainbow?

Beautiful song:-) Perfect voice for this music:-)

There is a version of this song on the Kristen Vigard album 'God, Loves and Angels, available on iTunes
It's not on Amazon music.
Thx
I think it's a re-recorded version, if memory serves, and not quite as good as the movie version.
Love this version. Sure is a sad song
Now I have nothing
So God give me strength
'Cause I'm weak in her wake
And if I'm strong I might still break
And I don't have anything to share
That I won't throw away into the air
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance of happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength
I can't hold on to her
God give me strength
When the phone doesn't ring
And I'm lost in imagining
Everything that kind of love is worth
As I tumble back down to the earth
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance of happiness
So God give me strength
God if she'd grant me her indulgence and decline
I might as well
Wipe her from my memory
Fracture the spell
As she becomes my enemy
Maybe I was washed out
Like a lip-print on his shirt
See, I'm only human
I want him to hurt
I want him
I want him to hurt
Since I lost the power to pretend
That there could ever be a happy ending
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance of happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength
She is the best at singing this song! love it! also love the movie!
Beautiful song that makes me want to cry when I hear
I saw this movie on TV. Loved this song so much that I bought both the DVD and CD.
Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach wrote this beauty. A very powerful combination.
My soundtrack I bought back in 96 has this version and Elvis' version....
Pure and raw. Goosebumps.
Touches your soul, and lets you know that its ok to have the bitter thoughts. Then the good in you can wipe away your pain. We all have do you choose to use it.

Oh, what pain the heart is in - what an emotional song. I just l loved it since the first time I saw the film ❤️🎶
I watch this movie for that one scene, too. Brilliant.

You are a very strong person, which is admirable. Not everyone faces heartbreak with such strngth. Therefore, see call for it from other sources.
Good for you, to be so strong in who you are!
Compassion to those who aren't there, yet.
A wonderful rendition. Can't imagine what mjauski is thinking. It perfectly matches Illeana Douglas's speaking voice.
we took the 90's for granted
God give me strength
+1. Well said. I love the song and I love hearing different interpretations.
Thank you xx
At long last, perfection.
That's the only way my household got thru everything❤
Beautiful

Need to hear this right now.

Just perfect.
beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her work in the Survivors was great also!
Thanks very much for your information! I wish I had bought the earlier version of the 'Grace Of My Heart' soundtrack. Still, this is helpful, thanks again.
Brava!
Absolutely. Been searching for this forever!
Elvis writes beautiful music..I just can't listen to his voice. This song is gorgeous.
The music is down to the great Burt Bacharach. Elvis did the words (which are great too).
Elvis started the song writing process by sending Burt music not lyrics
.u have great voice .. keep it on . N God bless u ..
Damn!😲
Where, if anywhere, can you buy this version of this brilliant song!!!
Sad god give me strength..
I love this song, but this sad sunset backdrop is making me laugh.
very nice song 5/5
Great voice - she is an alto with a second soprano range. I am used to the Elvis Costello version and the phrasing here is a bit too clipped - I like Elvis' phrasing better. Great ending and she really sounds great on the higher notes. Very rich voice.

I listened to Trijntje Oosterhuis and Elvis Costello and yes both are great versions but Kristen Vigard is amazing.
JESUS está voltando!
Selvfølgelig :P Så den nemlig os lige for et par dage siden og måtte jo så høre sangen igen.

We like that song because we're not the guy in the song, the dang phone that doesnt ring.
Did you happen to see the movie on tv2film too? :P
Kristen Vigard's version is as good as Costello's or is it the other way around?
God Give Me Strength... :[
