I got them every where but that is part of what I do for a living, I run a small msp and work with a local isp so there is always cable to be pulled some where lol
If i had a spot to put utility rack. I would do about 4 runs to major spots Bedrooms/living room/garage. Then run a couple at random spots: kitchen, dining room, hallway. If money allows it runs for a full security set up minimum of 5 cameras. Also a doorbell run for DoorBird.

I can totally relate to your discussion at the end of the video. I've got some friends that run homelabs but none of them are as deep in the woods with it as I am.
I love Ubiquity products. We use them at my office on our floor and I have one at my house for about a dozen devices. The AP firmware lapsed and i wasn't able to see access it through the controller software for a while, but today i decided to see what would happen, and sure enough it was detected and even said there's an update. That's some intuitive hardware if you ask me.

Instead of plugging your switch in the secondary port, could you have used the same as the POE injector? In other words, plug your switch in the POE injection box itself, thus using a single cable for data and power to the UAP? What's the relevance of using the secondary port? What about UAP that don't have a secondary port?
Dude this is perfect.i have my FiOS ont in the living room and i can't run a cable upstairs to my office. I have a PFsense FW and i want to segment and secure my network. Now i probably need 2 managed switches and 2 APs to pull this off but i know exactly what i need to do. cheers!
Love your videos man, keep up the great work! I've learned a lot watching your videos. I have an Orbi with wireless backhaul (tri band) and I use the port on the satellite + switch to bridge together all my devices in the basement, so very similar use case! Hopefully I can go full Unifi soon as well. EDIT: The only issue with wireless backhaul with the Pros is all of Unifis APs are dual band and so you will lose a lot of throughput without a dedicated third band. Second issue is the pro is 3x3 SU MIMO vs 4x4 MU MIMO for newer APs like the Nano but the only consumer priced one that contains the second port is indeed the Pro (otherwise you'd have to spend $300 for the HD). Just pointing that out! Also love the outro, thank you for your being so genuine and helping us all out. I will definitely be donating in the future!

I have actually been thinking about doing this very thing. I already have one Unifi AP AC Pro sitting here in the box for a refresh of my basic access network. I'll be replacing a Linksys WRT3200-ACM with this AP connected to a Netgate SG-1100 for internet. My brother's house is about 100 feet away and was considering doing a bridge with two of these AP's to allow him access to some of my network services without having to set up a VPN because internet out here isn't that great and we only have ~5mbt upload speed.
Your preview image said 400 MB/s not 400 Mbps. I thought it was going to be an insanely fast connection and was curious how that was possible over WiFi.
I feel you on the stream highlights. I remember hosting my website my home 486 and getting a letter from Road Runner/Before Time Waner/ Before Spectrum that I can't host without paying for business class internet. This had to be 99 or 00.

I have 2 AC pros and all my cameras and other hear in my outside study room are wireless and my 2nd AC pro is directed to that direction and it work great. AC pro's are great but I do not like their USG much but still use it though I have set up pfsense in my proxmox inspired by your video. I restart my server time to time (Ryzen 9 3900x) so I do not want my family to squeeze my neck when I am playing with my server and entire network is down. I strip some of the functions out of USG to other gear as USG is not that great but still keep it as it does the basics OK

Currently, I have two UAPv2 in a bridge mode to connect my switch, nvr, and cameras in my detached garage. These APs don't have a second port. There are some drops here and there, but it has been working other than that.
I am wondering if you could potentially help here. In a similar vein to your video, my setup is as follows: Unifi Dream Machine > Wireless connection to Unifi 6 Mesh AP > Wired connection to Unifi Switch (PoE) > Wired Connection to PC (LAN). In short, the Unifi 6 Mesh AP is acting as a wireless to ethernet bridge for my PC. However, the issue I am facing is that inevitably, both the Unifi 6 Mesh AP and Unifi Switch go offline. I have no idea why this is happening, but it does cause my PC to lose connection.
heads up - v5.x firmware can make almost 3/4 of your devices not be able to connect. I normally have close to 40 but only 9 could connect until I downgraded to the latest 4.x

Awesome idea. 1 question, let’s use your setup inside your detached garage as an example. You wireless bridge to a switch to your cams. If you wanted to add WiFi to that setup will you need another access point or the bridge can be both bridge and access point?
He is using WiFi to make the bridge... Do you mean add internet access to the garage? And if so then yes, you could just setup a vlan to go over that same setup he has and talk to another ap or use whatever And have it broadcast an SSID.
I’ve used the Unifi AP bridge setup for a long time. It’s possible that they’ve fixed with firmware updates, but there used to be an issue with using the same AP as a bridge to a wired network and using it as a wireless access point at the same time. The issue was that the AP wouldn’t sent the wireless traffic upstream over the wireless uplink and there’d be no connectivity. To fix, I disabled the WLANs on the bridge APs to keep my wireless clients from connecting to it. Perhaps it’s fixed and I should re-test, but this might help if you have issues.
Question: Can I use UniFi FlexHD or Unifi UAP-AC-M-PRO as "AP" and "CLIENTS" in a similar setup? I.e. having two or three 'clients' to a common 'access point' using this mode..? Thanks for awesome video :-)
Been trying to accomplish this with a Dream Machine and AP AC Pro. So far, no luck. It is never detected as a device when it is not physically connected to the network.

Hello, i was just thinking about doing this in my garage to connect my cameras to a Poe switch, because i don't have a UTP cable in my garage and pulling one will be hard. But i asked this question on the Ubiquiti Forum and there was the answer that with cameras, which produce alot of data transfer, this option is not good. What do you think?

I ran 10G copper between my out house and my main house (150 Yards or 300ft) but this would have worked nicely. might use this is some future installs.
@@royboivin Oh, Cat8 is quite different story, I expected Cat6 or Cat6A, though for this distance it is still a lot more energy efficient and reliable to have fiber, though finding already patched cable for this specific distance would be harder task

I'm trying to figure out if I'm overthinking this, because I'm not finding a straightforward answer online. Is this Wifi bridge to the outside garage simply plugging the Linksys router (that the cameras are connected to via PoE connections) into that second/new Unifi Access Point's Ethernet port? Like either the new AP in that garage is sitting right next to the Linksys router or there's an Ethernet cable being ran up and/or along the wall and/or floor? I guess I'm not getting past the abstraction of how devices connect to the internet, you're plugged in via an Ethernet cable or connected to WiFi, but it's the same device you're connecting to. Especially a box you get from the ISP, it's a router, modern, and Wi-Fi (that I guess is a wireless access point, to itself technically?) So I'm trying to figure out how "Set to WiFi bridge between two Unifi APS's" is not the same as "Connect two wireless devices". I have to be either missing something or overthinking this
house has one access point wireless to garage with 2nd AP. 2nd AP has 2 ports, one for POE and one connected to a switch in the garage just for more ports and POE to power cameras. You'll need the one in the description because it has the 2 ports.
When I tried this (Mar 2021) everything ran ok for a little while but then the unifi network collapsed with devices falling off the network and my 8 port unifi switch becoming unavailable. Once I powered off the wireless joined AP the network recovered. Not sure if this was because I'd put the new AP too close to an existing AP.
@@TechnoTim so it's not like the Asus bridge mode where the device that the Lan clients or switch connects to can only be used by Lan clients and not WiFi ones, I'm just trying to understand if that's the case before I go ahead with my network upgrades. Otherwise the tutorial is brilliant and extremely helpful, you got your self a new subscriber.
I must be missing something because I don't understand with just the PoE port on the injector plugged in how exactly is the software Unifi Network going to see the new AP?
I'm doing this currently with a main wifi 6 router to a WiFi ac router I'm getting about 320mbps any idea wifi when I try 2 wifi 6 routers the speed doesn't improve
Just tried to setup a uap-ac-pro as a client to an existing Wi-Fi AP (not Unifi) and there is no way. Only way to Wi-Fi bridge is with two Unifi devices. Situation is two buildings, one has complete working setup, second building is on a different power source so powerline wont work. I can get a good wifi signal from the second floor at one far end of the building. Second building has a fully wired network in place, with multiple hard wired devices (3d printers etc.) Currently using an NSM2 and it does what I want, just hella slow... uap-ac-pro is simply not able to do this simple job... looking at other manufacturers now...
So...any idea what we can do if we *can't* enable the Uplink Connectivity Monitor (at 3:23)? I have enough wi-fi networks set up I had to disable the setting (max 4 to use it), and can't re-enable it.
Are you sure this cannot be done using one of the "Lites" (or just any model with only 1 port) by connecting the LAN port on the power injector to an ethernet switch?
This, in-fact, does work. Once the "Lite" shows "Connected | Wireless", plug your switch or device into the injector's LAN port and wait for the "Lite" to figure out the LAN isn't an uplink. For me it cycled through "Isolated" to "Connected" and after a few mins it came back to "Connected | Wireless". After that, the remote network worked perfectly.
You're thumbnail picture is inaccurate. 400MB equal Mega (B)ytes, (b)its are lower case and 8 bits = 1 Byte. Techno Tim, maybe email me or a network engineer to proof your content before going out. 😁 Good stuff though, thanks.

I have multiple SSIDs for different VLANs that my main UAP AC PRO is broadcasting. If I use a second UAP AC PRO (or LITE) as a repeater, will the second one only broadcast the main SSID, or will i be able to broadcast all of the SSIDs for each VLAN ? thanks.
I'm little frustrated searching for an AP Client Router. And I was thinking to buy another UAP-AC-PRO (i already have 4 of them). but since I'm far from home cant really test if they work as ap client router. What I need? I'm traveling on an RV, every rv park has wifi internet, some of them free, some of them paid, but the constant is that the signal is weak. or I have the bad luck to pick the bad site or the far from the ap. In any case, I have a small wifi ap/router in my rv, that is capable to manage tethering from cellphone, wifi repeater (in a good routing mode), and wan via cable, and I have an external AP that has a sort of ap client router. But it has bad signal (despite that is announced as a powerful). Is a WAV brand, is so bad that my phone sees the park wifi but this ap no. In any case, I need an ap that I can connect to the site wifi, as a client, and connect the wired lan to my other wifi to connect my internal devices via cable or some via wifi. I guess that I should work as AP Client (no bridge/router) too
Sounds like a tough thing to figure out. In the past I've used DD-WRT to solve this in client mode. Not sure if you can adopt another non UniFI network with the AC Pro, might need one of their other products.
Yeahhhh... the new menus have changed again, since this video was made. A _lot._ - new UI (video 3:24->) forget WiFi Networks > Advanced > whatever. Now it's Network > System > Application Configuration > Uplink Conn. Monitor
Was all excited when I started watching this video until I realised that this will only work if you have an AP with 2 network connections. With only 1 connection you have to connect the network cable to power and data. As this now becomes a wired AP it does not trigger an uplink. Shame....

You could set it up wired, let it provision, then remove the network connect. It should find its way “home” . I have this set up now with a UDM Pro.

Thanks for the great video. I'm looking for a way to use a Ubiquiti Access Point the way you did but have it tie into a non-Ubiquiti access point for internet access. Do you think that is possible? (The UAP-IW-HD would be my preferred unit to use but I could use the same unit you had in the video)

I ran 10G copper between my out house and my main house (150 Yards or 300ft) but this would have worked nicely. might use this is some future installs.
Anything over 80 meters really need to be fiber for speeds above 2.5G

@@royboivin Oh, Cat8 is quite different story, I expected Cat6 or Cat6A, though for this distance it is still a lot more energy efficient and reliable to have fiber, though finding already patched cable for this specific distance would be harder task

Hey There! Can you give me a simple rundown of what was connected to what? I am trying to understand all of this but I would like to know where those APs and other devices were placed. If I understand correctly the NEW AP was connected to the LinkSYS router in the garage (this router is not connected to the Internet)? And this AP then bridged to the AP in your home which is connected to the Internet, right?

I'm trying to figure out if I'm overthinking this, because I'm not finding a straightforward answer online. Is this Wifi bridge to the outside garage simply plugging the Linksys router (that the cameras are connected to via PoE connections) into that second/new Unifi Access Point's Ethernet port? Like either the new AP in that garage is sitting right next to the Linksys router or there's an Ethernet cable being ran up and/or along the wall and/or floor?
I guess I'm not getting past the abstraction of how devices connect to the internet, you're plugged in via an Ethernet cable or connected to WiFi, but it's the same device you're connecting to. Especially a box you get from the ISP, it's a router, modern, and Wi-Fi (that I guess is a wireless access point, to itself technically?)
So I'm trying to figure out how "Set to WiFi bridge between two Unifi APS's" is not the same as "Connect two wireless devices". I have to be either missing something or overthinking this
house has one access point wireless to garage with 2nd AP. 2nd AP has 2 ports, one for POE and one connected to a switch in the garage just for more ports and POE to power cameras. You'll need the one in the description because it has the 2 ports.
When I tried this (Mar 2021) everything ran ok for a little while but then the unifi network collapsed with devices falling off the network and my 8 port unifi switch becoming unavailable. Once I powered off the wireless joined AP the network recovered. Not sure if this was because I'd put the new AP too close to an existing AP.

Yea, it can also be used as a repeater / mesh in this scenario!
@@TechnoTim so it's not like the Asus bridge mode where the device that the Lan clients or switch connects to can only be used by Lan clients and not WiFi ones, I'm just trying to understand if that's the case before I go ahead with my network upgrades.

Just tried to setup a uap-ac-pro as a client to an existing Wi-Fi AP (not Unifi) and there is no way. Only way to Wi-Fi bridge is with two Unifi devices. Situation is two buildings, one has complete working setup, second building is on a different power source so powerline wont work. I can get a good wifi signal from the second floor at one far end of the building. Second building has a fully wired network in place, with multiple hard wired devices (3d printers etc.) Currently using an NSM2 and it does what I want, just hella slow... uap-ac-pro is simply not able to do this simple job... looking at other manufacturers now...
So...any idea what we can do if we *can't* enable the Uplink Connectivity Monitor (at 3:23)? I have enough wi-fi networks set up I had to disable the setting (max 4 to use it), and can't re-enable it.

Are you sure this cannot be done using one of the "Lites" (or just any model with only 1 port) by connecting the LAN port on the power injector to an ethernet switch?
I don’t think so but I could be wrong.
This, in-fact, does work. Once the "Lite" shows "Connected | Wireless", plug your switch or device into the injector's LAN port and wait for the "Lite" to figure out the LAN isn't an uplink. For me it cycled through "Isolated" to "Connected" and after a few mins it came back to "Connected | Wireless". After that, the remote network worked perfectly.
You're thumbnail picture is inaccurate. 400MB equal Mega (B)ytes, (b)its are lower case and 8 bits = 1 Byte. Techno Tim, maybe email me or a network engineer to proof your content before going out. 😁 Good stuff though, thanks.

Curious how you set up your previous DD-WRT device to the first AC PRO. I've tried with a OpenWRT but it won't connect to my Unify AP.
I just used it as a "client" connection. Worked great for years. 2 AC Pros is a million times better. Links in description for the one I use.
I'm sure it's indeed much better... if I do that, I'll get the "In wall HD" to have the 4 port switch in one device.

I have multiple SSIDs for different VLANs that my main UAP AC PRO is broadcasting. If I use a second UAP AC PRO (or LITE) as a repeater, will the second one only broadcast the main SSID, or will i be able to broadcast all of the SSIDs for each VLAN ? thanks.

I'm little frustrated searching for an AP Client Router. And I was thinking to buy another UAP-AC-PRO (i already have 4 of them). but since I'm far from home cant really test if they work as ap client router.
What I need? I'm traveling on an RV, every rv park has wifi internet, some of them free, some of them paid, but the constant is that the signal is weak. or I have the bad luck to pick the bad site or the far from the ap. In any case, I have a small wifi ap/router in my rv, that is capable to manage tethering from cellphone, wifi repeater (in a good routing mode), and wan via cable, and I have an external AP that has a sort of ap client router. But it has bad signal (despite that is announced as a powerful). Is a WAV brand, is so bad that my phone sees the park wifi but this ap no. In any case, I need an ap that I can connect to the site wifi, as a client, and connect the wired lan to my other wifi to connect my internal devices via cable or some via wifi. I guess that I should work as AP Client (no bridge/router) too
Sounds like a tough thing to figure out. In the past I've used DD-WRT to solve this in client mode. Not sure if you can adopt another non UniFI network with the AC Pro, might need one of their other products.

Was all excited when I started watching this video until I realised that this will only work if you have an AP with 2 network connections. With only 1 connection you have to connect the network cable to power and data. As this now becomes a wired AP it does not trigger an uplink. Shame....
That's why I said you need the AC Pro
