Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were the best. Glad I got to see one of their final performances in LA. I have the original cast recording on CDs and listen to it often.
Agreed. I saw Sarah in concert with seats right next to the stage and her performance was breathtaking. In one part she is on the end of a long piece of stage that rises and extends over the audience which was just next level.
You can not possibly react to this song without following up with the truly enchanting rendition Emmy Rossum gave of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"! Ever since I first heard and watched that, I have wanted to sing it in a gothic cathedral, where the audience is kept practically in darkness as my voice moves from the gallery above and behind them to the main entrance and then advances to the front as the volume rises gently along with the level of light. By the end of the song, that last note reverberates in the stones while all the lights gather to one point behind the singer, thereby solidifying the utter solitude.
Do you really think she hasn't? I'd go so far as to say there's an odd-on chance she's even performed in a production of this at some point in the past.
I love this movie! i got to see Phantom of the Opera the Opera in my hometown Chicago i use to work at the theater it played at it was awesome! I love Gerard Butler's voice and he was handsome as ever!
Paul Stanley (lead singer of KISS) played the Phantom in Toronto in 1999, reprising the role after a previous run from May 25 to August 1. He was the final Phantom in the show's 10-year run. He said it was the hardest work he'd ever done.
Butler's not bad, but the OG Phantom (Michael Crawford -- also, "OG" ... haha, see what I did there, Phantom fans?) and Ramin Karimloo are _panty dropping_ singers, and that's what the Phantom needs to be. 😆
I was a music Major at Grand Rapids community college from August 2012 to May 1 2015 this one Maggie what's one of the songs I sang for my applied performance class I did hit the two high e-5s without cracking my voice because I had a great vocal coach it's always a pleasure though to see your beautiful self
Hi Maggie, you need to watch Anthony Warlow, from Australia. Fantastic operatic sing in the country in my opinion. Not sure if he did Phantom, however it is highly positive. He’s also done a duet with our legendary singer John Farnham, in a concert tour called the Main Event. John is a pop rock star and he’s known as THE VOICE (not the show, but he himself) and John and Anthony sing Granada! They are great mates…I believe you would love their singing and their humour…❤ Please, if you see this Maggie, react on this. I would love your take on it. Interestingly, Anthony Warlow, did a whole Album about Jeckle and Hyde. In the finale, he actually sings both parts of Jelleff AND Hyde. He sung it in studio, and he commented in an interview, that he did both parts together….its Amazing. He said it was the hardest thing he’d ever sung… brilliant and very evocative! It may not have been televised though…..
Opera is also very much about acting. You must not merely sing the song but portray the emotions,, the motivations, the PERSON of the role with voice and movement. I enjoy most musical theater but must admit that I do not really have the qualifications to do any serious criticism. I did like this video. Good reaction, good analysis, Maggie!
Before I thought to comment breathlessly having just DISCOVERED recently the full stage production on TH-cam, it's likely you HAVE seen the Universal Studios backed 25th Anniversary stage performance of PotO @ The Royal Albert Hall replete with full closeups of the stellar stage cast's performances, character moments and closeups, and vocal renditions and the cinematic angles of the full story that I Only NOW appreciate! 🎭 🎹 🕯but if you haven't, I highly recommend it! Same as I finally understood the story and character motivations in Pride and Prejudice from the BBC minseries with the excellent Ehle/Firth despite the splendid cast in the single film version limited by its format! You must do all that the phantom asks of you. For a fuller picture and greater context!
Maggie i know you have reacted to dan vasc before. Did you know he also covered several phantom of the opera songs including this one? He sings it legit no metal. I would love to hear your reaction. It’s my favorite version overall. He does have opera voice training. I dont think you will be disappointed.
✨You Are So Spot on in Your Reaction! 🎯 I Must Be Spoiled, Because NOTHING Beats The Original Broadway Cast of Singers & Players. If I Had My Druthers, I’d Play The Movie & Mute it When The Musical Numbers Come on & Play The CD of The Original Broadway Soundtrack❕✨💖✨
Yes, both Butler & Rossum sounded like actors singing in a movie, but I did enjoy their performances (save that one cheesy note. He just doesn't have the range - full voice or falsetto for that note). I'd say good job overall.
Okay, best to ask an opera singer about the Broadway musical Phantom of the Opera! Is opera singing the same thing as musicals that sings opera? Silly question? Are they the same field?
My favorite song in Phantom, and I have always thought this rendition of it was pretty good. I do prefer the original version with Michael Crawford though.
Gerard Butler is a baritone if im not mistaken.. Is it normal to have a singer with a midrange singing voice sing songs with high tenor notes in them? It seems to me like everyone thinks baritones should sing the roof off the house when some of us (baritones) are more comfortable singing in our mix? Im a baritone and i find it easier to sing in my lower register. Just curious 🤔
Opinions on the original production vs. newer productions? It seems the changes were done to make the Phantom less sympathetic. I don't think it really improves anything either. Just saying.
It would be interesting as a singer for you to compare this with Pink Floyd's Echoes from the Meddle album. Roger Waters opted out of suing ALW for plagiarism. BTW, Michael Crawford was in the original cast and he's more famous here in the UK as the accident-prone Frank Spencer in the 70's sitcom, Some Mothers Do 'Ave Them in which he did his own (quite dangerous) stunts.
What I really hated about Antonio Banderas was that they adjusted it for him, but put Sarah Brightman out of her comfortable range making her sound awful.
The Phantom seems horribly disfigured over roughly 1/16 of his entire face. (understated for effect) I'm not familiar with this version. Is he meant to be burned at all or are his scars more psychological?
Gerard Butler took me out of this film. He was a terrible choice for the Phantom. He was really struggling with the singing, and it showed. I was too poor at the time to see this show on stage during its heyday and so I WANTED this movie to happen. I bought the DVD when it came out... but then I heard Butler sing. I haven't been able to watch it since that first initial viewing. I was SO disappointed.
I sang this song in concert many many years ago. It never fails to hit my sensitivities.
Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were the best. Glad I got to see one of their final performances in LA. I have the original cast recording on CDs and listen to it often.
Crawford just wasn't believable to me...he sounded gay and just couldn't see anything between the two of them. Butler is much more handsome and manly.
I agree Michael Crawford had more pain and grit in his voice.
Agreed. I saw Sarah in concert with seats right next to the stage and her performance was breathtaking. In one part she is on the end of a long piece of stage that rises and extends over the audience which was just next level.
I like the version of the lyrics he sang and I think his voice was better.
I saw this in the cinema was so surprised at how good Gerard butler was and i saw the show in london he did a good job with this

I love this movie both Gerard and Emmy do a fantastic job. Now you need to see the stage version.
Do you really think she hasn't? I'd go so far as to say there's an odd-on chance she's even performed in a production of this at some point in the past.
Universal Studios backed 25th Anniversary @ Royal Albert Hall findable on TH-cam?
Please also watch Phantom's 25th Anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall.
Yes!! This is a must!!

Emmy Rossum is a classical trained singer and was only 16 years old when she auditioned for this role.
I'm not qualified to analyze the singing, but I very much enjoyed the overall performance. And I appreciate Maggie's skills and knowledge on this.
You must also listen to Dan Vasc's version of this song. It is also phenomenal! ✌🏻
I agree with most of the others with the fact that Michael Crawford was the best at portraying the Phantom.
in the past actors were trained to sing. especially in broadway musicals. so that they could sing, dance, and act.
You have to respect the fact that Gerard Butler took lessons to learn how to sing for this movie because he didn't want to be dubbed.
Butler's not bad, but the OG Phantom (Michael Crawford -- also, "OG" ... haha, see what I did there, Phantom fans?) and Ramin Karimloo are _panty dropping_ singers, and that's what the Phantom needs to be. 😆
Anthony Warlow is a pretty good Phantom as well, but yes no one is better that Michael Crawford.
I was a music Major at Grand Rapids community college from August 2012 to May 1 2015 this one Maggie what's one of the songs I sang for my applied performance class I did hit the two high e-5s without cracking my voice because I had a great vocal coach it's always a pleasure though to see your beautiful self
Absolutely love this movie....
Have you heard Dan Vasc sing this song? It is well worth a listen. His cover of Gethsemane is beautiful too. I love your reactions ❤
Michael Crawford is the Phantom
If you like the fact he sounds gay and isn't manly at all.
Oh Maggie ... you MUST hear the original cast. Michael Crawford defined the roll. I have to endure the posers after. Sara and Michaell FOREVER

Listen to Dan Vasc’s version of Music of the Night. He is a heavy metal singer but sings this one legit. He actually has opera voice training.
@@blinksmom Yes I have heard that one. Quite good. I like it.
See the available findable Universal Studios backed 25th Anniversary stage performance of PotO @ The Royal Albert Hall!
Dan vasc sings this as well if you wanna hear him sing it!
You do realize that one of Gerard Butler's hit movies was "300" (2006) where he portrayed King Leonidas, i.e., range!
Big fan of careful word choice in lyrics. The only song I've heard that uses "tremulous" and "garish". Lovely feel.
I can't believe how good Gerard Butler was in this. It was almost ten years before I even realized it was him!
My favorite reinvention is by Dan Vasc. You will be greatly surprised.
Tarja Turunen covered this in 2011 with Cirque de Solei . Wonderful version.
All I Ask Of You' - Sarah Brightman & Michael Ball | The Phantom of The Opera

Im not sure if you have been asked yet but i believe you would really enjoy kasey chambers version of "lose yourself" by eminem.
I prefer the Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman version.
Ugh...Crawford sounds gay and isn't manly enough.

Sammy Davis Jr sings a version of this and it's excellent.
Hey Maggie? Go react to ADAM LAMBERT/Queen doing the OPERA, Nessun Dorma in Italy
How about Connie Francis's cover of "Love is a many splendid thing" please. Ty
The most seductive song ever!
Except the original I Love Peter Jöback who did the part many times
Okay, best to ask an opera singer about the Broadway musical Phantom of the Opera! Is opera singing the same thing as musicals that sings opera? Silly question? Are they the same field?
Many performers have made this song theirs over the years but I still prefer the Michael Crawford version
My favorite song in Phantom, and I have always thought this rendition of it was pretty good. I do prefer the original version with Michael Crawford though.
crawford and brightman best.

Wasn't the stolen riff in "Echoes"
@@winterknight4176- yes, you’re right, it was from ‘Echoes’ and not from ‘The Wall’.
@@winterknight4176 Yes, you're right, it was Echoes, I'll correct my post...
What I really hated about Antonio Banderas was that they adjusted it for him, but put Sarah Brightman out of her comfortable range making her sound awful.
I do prefer this song and a few others from Phantom (maybe because they are overplayed).
The Phantom seems horribly disfigured over roughly 1/16 of his entire face. (understated for effect)
I'm not familiar with this version. Is he meant to be burned at all or are his scars more psychological?
This is not an easy song given the range involved. This is a good version though not my favorite.
I'm truly sorry you had to suffer through that.
Maggie, this version rates near the bottom of all the male singers to perform it. Number one pick, Michael Crawford. IMHO
Gerard Butler may not be the best singer, buy I've heard worse on The Voice USA and AGT.
