This is the most tragic love story in opera ( both oriental and western ) . It is the only opera that brings tears in my eyes ! In the scene of when he wrote the poem/prose , the only two sentences uttered between 唐 琬 and 陸 游 showed the deep and intense love between them , the emotion of suffering showed by the maestro and the female protagonist just break one’s heart ! At the last act on revisiting the garden , the lyrics are just brilliant, the composer incorporated some of the poems 陸 游 wrote on his subsequent revisits to the garden , they demonstrate his regrets , remembrance and how much he missed her is very poignant and the maestro sang it beautifully ! As usual the performance is superb, it also showcase how brilliant the maestro is ! One does not get tired watching it !
