1:30 Good point about being an entrepreneur. I hear people, who have never owned a business, saying stuff like "set your own work hours", "be your own boss", etc. But every actual business owner knows that there is no such thing as a real day off and business hours are 24/7 and are defined entirely by your customers and your ability to pay staff. Actually not all dogs get over it. Some dogs don't, and shouldn't, be bathed regularly like a goldendoodle would, and don't appreciate it either. Like many breeds of working dogs with double coats. The shampooing strips their coat of the natural oils and texture that help the coat to do it's job. Dogs like the Great Pyrenees, like mine. I brush my dogs coat twice per week and can get it done in about 15 minutes or less if needed. She loves it. But water touching her.....not so much. It's hard to convince a dog who's DNA demands that actual bathing is weird and wrong, to allow you to destroy thousands of years of fine-tuning to NOT be shampooed. Plus, there's the problem of moving a 130 lb dog who doesn't want to be moved! Fortunately, these types of dogs don't require much more than brushing and nail clipping. Absolutely no shaving their coats unless for medical care, and washing only if really needed, at most, the very most, twice per year, and maybe never. Just brushing out their coats regularly keeps them surprisingly clean. Our ancestors bred these dogs with this characteristic in mind because it was necessary for the job. We have to respect a dog's breed and the fact that us humans often lay down perceptions and rules that we think should apply to all dogs. And that is simply not true.
@@Yosetimethey didn't say "all dogs". Good grief. "Dogs like this". Doodles were NOT bred to be self cleaning, obviously. What was the point of your essay? To state the obvious? Dogs deserve to feel good free of dirt, stink and skin irritation. Mat-free. You can enjoy your stanky dog. Even working dogs have been groomed on this channel but if you want a gold star for speaking up then here you go ⭐️
Poor baby! They did the right thing. ❤ Before we adopted our Goldendoodle I searched and found your channel. I immediately made an appointment for him at the groomer. Luckily he was wonderful and now has a monthly appointment with his groomer. I am addicted to watching your videos!
Some get these pups as not meant to cast hair? They don’t realize they need clipped and groomed regularly. Many of these breeds end up with messy coats and neglected it’s sad.Owner of this dog is obviously very caring to drive seven hours to get him clipped.x
There are people like you who have the ability to not only remain calm, but to *keep going* to teach the dog that their behavior does not result in stopping (unless safety is an issue). I am not one of those people; I would chicken out from fear or distress. Of course you have a depth of experience, but also you have a gift.
Vanessa’s comment about the crucial early months was very true for my childhood pup. He came to us at three months, a sturdy little black lab cross, and had a happy, much loved 18 years with us, but no one ever picked up a broom to sweep without Ben running away in panic. Someone had beaten him those first months and he never got over it.
Our family dog that we adopted as an adult was so afraid of brooms and vacuum cleaners that he would run away and we had to cross the street for brooms. We managed to desensitize him and by the end he would lie all relaxed until the vacuum would literally touch him or we had to tell him to go away. I guess it works for some and it doesn‘t for others.
@@elizabethhayman-oldham5151 Me too! But we don’t know whether he even had an owner because the adoption agency was so shady. He clearly was street smart and knew what a trash can was
I adopted a doodle who was in the exact same situation and time frame, we actually saved him from being euthanized. It's now been almost two years and he has mostly learned that grooming is a positive experience and he can trust me, but he is still extremely chronically anxious. It breaks my heart to see him be so scared of literally everything, his own tail startles him sometimes... He's such a sweet boy, I just wish he had a better start in life Ó╭╮Ò
Unfortunately, since most if not all doodles are brought into this world for money and moneey alone, a stable temperament isn't a priority. The same thing happens with byb German Shepherds and Huskies where you have dogs with poor temperaments or behavioral issues caused by their conflicting instincts. It's so sad, the dogs don't deserve this.😢
but you're now giving him the best life you can and loving him regardless of his start in life. You're doing the best thing for him and you understand his anxieties. Good job on that! Don't beat yourself up for other people's mistakes.
Man, you deserve a medal for that groom. Poor little guy … he was just so scared. Rescue dogs have so much baggage that we never will know about. You absolutely were amazing with him. Thanks for sharing. 😊💙💗
It drives me nuts that backyard breeders mix poodles with everything now, and people buy them without understanding that the dog needs training and structure to be great. Then the poor dogs get dumped because they’re not cute puppies anymore and have developed bad behaviors. It’s so unfair to the dogs.
@@trishblakely3476We need to bring back mutts. They’re generally healthier. Than these overbred dogs around these days. I wonder what happened to stray dogs here in the US. They are very rare to see.
We just got a miniature poodle in February…we have her groomed every 6 weeks…and she LOVES it! She walks around like the cock of the walk when she comes home as if to say “oh everyone just look at me!”
6:11 this is so true. We rescued a 4 year-old Havanese x Yorkshire with little to no information on previous owners and they definitely abused him. We are now 3 years later and still working on making him trust humans again. The close family is fine, but strangers and other dogs are a big trigger. Strangely enough, he loves cats. Good work on this puppy!
Yes, especially if he wasn't treated very well in his tender months whipping out something noisy like some clippers that he's never seen before and he'll most certainly get scared, stressed, and retaliate. Someone inexperienced with dogs who show aggression when scared might not know how to react in the situation and be unsure of how to proceed. It's good they brought him to Vanessa so she could coach them on how to best proceed with him moving forward.
I'm so glad he was adopted by people willing to bring him to you, especially traveling 7 hours! And you're an angel for grooming him even tho you're sick! Feel better soon hon! Much love from the states ❤
Thank you to the owners for adopting him as an older puppy. I also thank you for taking the time to work with him on his terms. I hope he feels so much better after his spa treatment.

Apricot poodles are tottaly different from all the other poodles! Very strong personalityes and ready always for a challange:) They know and they can see that they are the most beautiful and they are clever enough to take advantage from this, every step they do. Tricky, playfull, and very, very loyal and possesive with all they love and charish... My dear Ricky was with me a long way: 17 years. In good times and in bad times, he stand by me like a rock. He brought a lot of joy in my life and in everybody s life who meet him...
Vanessa, you always sound surprised that your clients make such long journeys to see you. No surprise to me, as the care and empathy you show the dogs in your hands is beyond exemplary. Your are gentle, but firm, kind and careful. The results may sometimes not be how you want, but you always do your best. I think we all want a Vanessa in our towns and countries!
What a beautiful boy, I can see why they chose him. He's just a scared puppy learning to trust. That's not a I'm scary leave me alone, it's a please don't hurt me squeal. Poor boy, I'm in love with him.
Such patience you have! I brought my dog once to a groomer that refused him because he growled and reached for his collar too quickly. I took him to another groomer who said he was perfectly behaved and that’s where he goes now. You are the proof that a good groomer takes time for the dog to calm down a little, plus you try hard to make your doggy clients as comfortable as possible.
Absolutely avoid that first groomer! Unfortunately there are some still who go by the (completely disproven) 'dominance' theory of dog handling, or who can't read a dog's anxious body language well, or - perhaps worse - who have just got tired of caring and will yell at dogs or hit them to force them into submission! I've heard plenty of horror stories from new clients of why they left former groomers, and not once have any of their dogs been unhandleable with a little patience and clear instruction and positive reinforcement. Most dogs will calm right down and be so happy to cooperate if you can just let them know clearly what you want them to do and that they're being A Good Dog!
We’ve had similar experience. Couple shops banned him because either they are afraid he’ll jump off grooming table and hang himself or they are afraid he’ll hurt them. I understand because he is very mouthy and his smile looks like a snarl. Instead we found a mobile groomer who treats Teddybear well, seems to like him, and has no problems at all. More expensive but for now we can afford it.
I have had three Springer Spaniels (one was a foster) and they require a LOT of grooming. I decided I would learn how to do it myself, starting with my darling girl who we got in 2003. She was practically perfect in all ways - sweet, friendly to all humans/canines, biddable, wanted to please, etc. (and a real Mommy's Girl, I was her sun). She was great for grooming except for her feet, right from the day we brought her home. Even then she never tried to bite, just made it clear she didn't like it (would pull her feet away and growl just a little). I could still get them done especially if someone was feeding her treats at the same time! One time I decided to give myself a break and took her to a groomer that had been recommended by another Springer owner. I told them in advance she was fine with absolutely everything (clippers, scissors, bathing, drying, being crated, etc.) except her feet and if they couldn't get those done I understood. So I went back to pick her up when they called and when I walked in, no one came to the counter and they were avoiding my eyes. I couldn't see my dog. After a couple minutes someone finally came over, wearing a face like thunder - without my dog. Bewildered, I said, "Where's Sunny? What's going on?" The person said flatly, "SHE BITES. She tried to bite us when we went to do her feet." I was dumbstruck! I didn't know if I should be angry, embarrassed or what. I mean, I had TOLD them she didn't like her feet being handled and to leave them alone if she got upset. And what kind of groomer hasn't experienced a dog that doesn't like something being done? For heaven's sake, you should be able to deal with it, it's not like my dog is Cujo! All I could get out was, "Uh, well, I had said you didn't need to do her feet... how was the bath and the clipping?" "FINE," the person snarled. "And you need to pay us before you can have your dog back." I didn't even know what to say... so I simply paid and left (I did not leave a tip!), fighting back tears. The dog looked okay and was VERY glad to see me. But needless to say we never ever set foot in ANY grooming establishment, ever again! The whole thing was ridiculous.
It’s so important to start grooming as a small pup. Our cavapoo has been going every month since 8 weeks old and now he’s perfect for our groomer. It’s sad this dog had a rough start. Those first months are so important for socialization. Great job!
I think it also depends on the dog. The dogs personality and past. I didn’t start with my Bernadoodle until she was like 5-6 months. And she was fantastic and still is.
@@b.r.v.8609 Good poodle breeders will start introducing clipper vibrations to the pups around 4-6 weeks and even shave their faces. The sooner the better.
@@tontolapiko1067this is a doodle and they don’t typically come from good breeders unfortunately. Their temperament and coat types are also very unpredictable. Great Job Vanessa. Your effort to reassure him to give him a less stressful experience was spot on. I agree that consistency is key with this little dude.
I would easily drive 7 hours to get a scared dog the super calm and safe grooming job you did for this boy today. You gave him an excellent start to grooming!
it's honestly incredible every time watching these types of anxious dogs calm down a bit as you figure out and avoid their triggers. you can see him settle a bit after you stop using the clippers on his legs and feet in particular. poor dude. hopefully the owners continue to work with him at home and regular grooming becomes a nonissue for him in the future!
We adopted Chaos when she was 5 months and was taken from the streets in Texas. She was at an adoption agency and in a foster home. The foster was wonderful with her. She was snapping, got protective of me, fight with our other dog, Hugo (who could hurt her in a real fight). We worked so hard to love her to calm and discipline her on the snapping. She ate through 9 dog beds (part my fault for buying them, lol) she is two this year and the best dog!! Never snaps, friendly with everyone and no more tearing up dog beds and toys. We love her and often say, it’s a good thing she came to us because the struggle may have caused someone else to rehome her. She is here furever!
The owner has done the right thing by bringing him to you.I love the fact you did his eyes first so he could see what to bite!! But seriously, a job well done and I'm sure his next groomer will thank you for your patience and advice.
I am incredibly impressed. You’re not feeling well and you’re grooming mr difficult. I honestly can’t think of anyone else who would be this kind and patient, especially when you’re not well. This was stressful for poor puppy but he just couldn’t have been in better hands. ❤
Aw, poor little boy.💖 He's so sweet. Love those curls and his coloring is beautiful.😍😍 Well done to the owners for travelling so far for his benefit. They couldn't of gone to a better, expert groomer like our girl,Vanessa. She works wonders. Thanks to the owners for all they do for this gorgeous pup.👍👍👏👏 Get well soon,Vanessa ❤ Yep,Vanessa IS the best. Memories of Max .
I can't believe people are traveling 100's of miles to take their dog to one particular groomer! There are good, patient groomers in every city. Vanessa is absolutely great, but she isn't the only groomer in Canada and the US who can handle a difficult or scared dog. The owners aren't going to be able to travel so far every time their dog needs a trim, so I don't know how this is that beneficial. I think it has more to do with getting their dog on camera and groomed by a famous groomer than anything, which I get. It would be an experience they will never forget! But as for really helping the dog long-term, it isn't a solution. They still have to find a groomer in their area who can handle a scared dog. They need to ask around in their local area, ask the vet, etc., for recommendations. I guess the argument is that somehow Vanessa can "teach" other groomers how to handle that particular dog, but there are plenty of groomers with decades of experience who don't need to be taught how to groom a challenging dog.
I think the owners made the best choice they felt they could. If there were groomers near them that has TH-cam videos, they could have more choices. To my understanding, groomers don't allow for owners to be allowed to be around at a grooming. Would you let your kid be taken from you during a doctor appointment? I would hope not. So how do you judge a groomers attitude and whether they will take the necessary time to work with a difficult dog? I have watched a lot of groomers on TH-cam and Vanessa is by far the most patient and soothing. She would be a best choice for a first groom. Someone screwed up this dog. Vanessa had the patience to figure out the problems. Now the owners have hope of finding a nearby groomer. They can even show the video of Vanessa. If the new groomer is too proud to take advice, they are not a good choice.
@susycavaleiro1265 Let’s be careful not to idealize color, that’s how many poorly bred doodles come into the world. They’re sold on color, as are most doodles and backyard bred dogs. Beware of things like so-called “rare” or “exotic” or “unique” colors, most often they’re just incorrect to the breed bc the genetics are crap and they’re mixed with random other dogs.
He's really a good looking dog! He tried hard to stay calm, and I'm sure your firm but gentle approach really helped. He was probably thinking yes, I am a good boy!
Bumpy did well for his 1st spa appointment. I wonder if it is the sound, the vibration, or both that causes him to be reactive to the clippers. He's adorable.
I think you did a wonderful job! I still love his face that you did! I feel you were a little judgmental on yourself with his face. It was very nicely shaped especially when you have a dog who has little triggers. The owner was so very grateful when she saw the results. You also watched carefully how to adapt to his triggers and quickly corrected the situation. Good job!!! 😊
I love that you work with dog you have, not the one you wish for, and accommodate his quirks while still getting the job done! Hats off to you and your compassion. I'm sure they'll respond to your insights since they were willing to drive 7 hours for a groom!
because of watching you, I was able to learn to groom my puppy very early in life. I started out with scissors and trimming her nails. At 18 months old , she is now a pro at grooming that loves her special time. We graduated to clippers, but still do her feet mostly with the scissors.

Even working dogs have been groomed on this channel but if you want a gold star for speaking up then here you go ⭐️
I respect you so much for your patience and understanding with this dog. Definitely worth a seven hour drive.
Poor baby! They did the right thing. ❤ Before we adopted our Goldendoodle I searched and found your channel. I immediately made an appointment for him at the groomer. Luckily he was wonderful and now has a monthly appointment with his groomer. I am addicted to watching your videos!
My what beautiful teeth you have there, grandma, Red Riding Hood said to the wolf.
I hope his family had an enjoyable time in Toronto and that they had a good drive home. They have shown their love and consideration for Bumpy.
Thank you for being a responsible doodle owner with the monthly grooms! 🐾❤
Some get these pups as not meant to cast hair? They don’t realize they need clipped and groomed regularly. Many of these breeds end up with messy coats and neglected it’s sad.Owner of this dog is obviously very caring to drive seven hours to get him clipped.x
Yep, I totally agree, I'm addicted to watching these videos because they're so good and very informative!
That’s heartbreaking. I hope that person/people never got another pet
@@elizabethhayman-oldham5151 Me too! But we don’t know whether he even had an owner because the adoption agency was so shady. He clearly was street smart and knew what a trash can was
That breaks my heart! 💔😢 thank you for giving him the best life he deserved
Poor guy 😞
Vanessa giving out life lessons on temper tantrums. If she ever decides to become a mother, she'll be an excellent one.
That’s so sad, they’re naturally very happy dogs. Our 8 month old is always happy and excited about everything, humans can ruin dogs, and save them
I have my dog on Prozac and recently added the supplement L-Theanine to help my dog's everyday anxiety.
Unfortunately, since most if not all doodles are brought into this world for money and moneey alone, a stable temperament isn't a priority. The same thing happens with byb German Shepherds and Huskies where you have dogs with poor temperaments or behavioral issues caused by their conflicting instincts. It's so sad, the dogs don't deserve this.😢
Have you tried playing calming music to the pup and/or using calming essential oils on him?
but you're now giving him the best life you can and loving him regardless of his start in life.
Poodles often have itchy eyes and hate their front legs being touched. They can also be emotional and drama queens. But they're so kind hearted ❤️
True !! dogs in general don’t like their paws being touched and the noise of clippers scares them like no other !
It drives me nuts that backyard breeders mix poodles with everything now, and people buy them without understanding that the dog needs training and structure to be great. Then the poor dogs get dumped because they’re not cute puppies anymore and have developed bad behaviors. It’s so unfair to the dogs.
Someone needs to design silent clippers
@@trishblakely3476We need to bring back mutts. They’re generally healthier. Than these overbred dogs around these days. I wonder what happened to stray dogs here in the US. They are very rare to see.
....TOTALLY AGREE...although ANY mixing sucks...
Aww... She was so grateful. You did a wonderful job.
I don’t even have a dog but find your channel most interesting.
We just got a miniature poodle in February…we have her groomed every 6 weeks…and she LOVES it! She walks around like the cock of the walk when she comes home as if to say “oh everyone just look at me!”
To see the owner cry brought tears to my eyes too.
He's just very scared, he'll come around with practice, patience, and consistency. Fantastic job!!
Ah that reunion at the end was adorable 😊 Hes clearly a lovely dog underneath his trust issues ❤ hope you feel better soon Vanessa!
I'm so glad he was adopted by people willing to bring him to you, especially traveling 7 hours!
And you're an angel for grooming him even tho you're sick! Feel better soon hon!
Much love from the states ❤
Vanessa’s calm, professional demeanor makes all the difference.😊
He obviously is in good hands with that owner. It would be lovely to see his progress for grooming now that he's had such a good start.
His face is absolutely adorable. You did a great job.
The owners reaction was worth a Million Dollars !! Well Done.
What an adorable boy. Hes so nervous.
Love the owners' reactions❤
Thank you to the owners for adopting him as an older puppy. I also thank you for taking the time to work with him on his terms. I hope he feels so much better after his spa treatment.
I had tears in my eyes listening to his mom! She was happy and he was so excited to see her! Great video!
You may have trained to be a Licensed Beautician, but your calling is definitely with our fur and feathered friends! God given talent!
Feathered friends? Does she deal in birds too?
@@felixhenson9926 She has done a duck in the past, from what I've seen!
I really think it's fantastic how much patience you have. You don't give up, even when you're sick. You've done a great job again! chapeau! 👍
Greetings from Belgium! 🇧🇪
Still a clever boy to keep his mouth shut and tongue inside when you mentioned, “and I don’t want to clip your tongue…” 😜
As a groomer, I appreciate your videos that show pet owners what we actually do! I also like your compassionate approach and wish more groomers had such patience. I would love to work with you!
'You're the best!" You definitely are the best, Vanessa!!!
💯 I wish there was a groomer like Vanessa where I live!
Such cuuute eyes. Thanks for being so chill so you can help these animals.
@@jenniesmythe8188 that’s pure luck then, it’s highly recommended to start their grooming at 3 or 4 months
I have groomed many doodles just like this guy. I wish more owners of all dog breeds would begin their dogs grooming at as young an age as possible to hopefully prevent issues like this dog has.
@@b.r.v.8609 Agreed. Not a supporter of doodle breeding in any way.
Those owners love him very much. What sweet and caring people who just want what’s best for their boy.
when I was little our family dentist called the drills he used on cavities Mr Bumpy and Mr Whistle so kids wouldn't be as scared. oddly enough, some of lil Bump's whimpers are just as high-pitched as those drills. this doggy is a dental tool and I love him.
Even though he gets upset, you're still very kind to him. I love that!
OMG he looks so cute. Great job. He seemed so proud when his owners came to pick him up.
So sweet to see mom's reaction to his groom. Overall, a huge success! As he gets used to the grooming process, I'd love to see him in a slightly longer clip. He's really adorable.
He's a good boy. I'm so glad he has new owners who care about him!
Brilliant job on Bumpy. He was so scared he was shaking. I think each groom he will be better. Vanessa you are amazing so sweet to Bumpy.♥️🐾
He has the most adorable eyes!
it's honestly incredible every time watching these types of anxious dogs calm down a bit as you figure out and avoid their triggers. you can see him settle a bit after you stop using the clippers on his legs and feet in particular. poor dude. hopefully the owners continue to work with him at home and regular grooming becomes a nonissue for him in the future!

Her reaction was everything. You did such a great job.
Well, THAT got me teary-eyed. Her reaction was priceless. What a beautiful job!

I am incredibly impressed. You’re not feeling well and you’re grooming mr difficult. I honestly can’t think of anyone else who would be this kind and patient, especially when you’re not well. This was stressful for poor puppy but he just couldn’t have been in better hands. ❤

ÑhN
@mygirldarby but this was the first professional groom and the dog needed a good experience.
Great job Vanessa, that was tense! The owner's reaction was amazing. Get well soon!
Sad to see traumatized, or neglected pups. It is so difficult and time consuming to remedy. You do great work.
Bumpy did well for his 1st spa appointment. I wonder if it is the sound, the vibration, or both that causes him to be reactive to the clippers. He's adorable.
Is so very nice to see your dogs learn to trust you and then the comfort for them that comes along with that process. Lovely...
You’re a saint for being able to show so much patience while sick! There’s definitely a reason people drive for hours to bring their dogs to you! ❤
Good job!!! 😊

You were so patient and gentle with him. Wonderful job!
Aw he has very kind eyes and you can tell he doesn’t want to be feisty ❤
because of watching you, I was able to learn to groom my puppy very early in life. I started out with scissors and trimming her nails. At 18 months old , she is now a pro at grooming that loves her special time. We graduated to clippers, but still do her feet mostly with the scissors.
I think he looked distinguished when you were done. You are admirably patient with your clients, and you definitely have a gift when it comes to “difficult” animals.
Way to be compassionate and assertive! It's no wonder people travel from all over to see you!

That owner’s reaction was the best!!! You show compassion and firmness and a huge dose of patience! I’m not a groomer but he looked fabulous! It’s hard to get that trust back after having been through whatever. I’d say it’s definitely worth the seven hour drive! I bet Vanessa will invent the first noiseless clippers! I am always awestruck when you read the pet so well and get the very best out of them with the minimum of stress. No wonder people drive for hours to have you do the grooming. You are such a star.
Poor furry darling, I am so glad he lives with other people now. They fortunately take good care of him, he was so happy when he saw his owner. You trimmed him beautifully and he is nice and clean and fresh again. If you keep repeating the trimming and he gets a little older I think it will get better and better.
