The most memorable performance was the 2000 MD Festival where Vinnie declared his faith and rocked the house with his band! I knew he has a deep intellectual mind, but also a deep faith as well. So pleased to be the first to comment. I have followed this man all my Drumming Life (40yrs). Hearing Vinnie play for the first time on the "Zildjian Day In New York Video" totally captured me to the point of transfixia, I could not take my eyes off the man & neither did I want to. The video begins with that Mesmerising Iconic Word "Zildjian" Vinnie & Tim fade in with the medium tempo Intro, I found this Intro to be Instantaneously Addictive to the point of being Infectious. Vinnie plays a simple groove then every once in a while he'd reach for the Bell of his Ride followed by a Snare Back Beat, To hear this Tranquil Chill Out Fill was so pretty it's almost as if the Bell was literally being played on the moon. Then Vinnie's tuning talent takes me by surprise, a 10" Tom with a dipping pitch bend, Simply Gorgeous. Then the Funk Tune again with Tim on Bass, The Rocky Number, Vinnie's Solo's, all of which is priceless. To choose a Tutor based on you being interested in learning what they're about then Vinnie will keep you on your toes all your life. I'm not a religious person but if I were I'd say that Vinnie's Level of Mastery & Greatness has taught me a great deal so far, For the learning will never be over. So in the words of the Accappella Band "Take 6", If we ever, a needed, the Lord before, we sure do need him now, we need him every day & every hour. Thanks for the God Cast Interview. If you do an interview with Vinnie, you're lucky if you get 5 questions out during the time you are with him. He's always in stream of consciousness mode. He loves to talk if the questions aren't stupid. The first time I saw Vinnie play was with the Dave Boruff band at the Flying Jib in Encino CA in 1982 with Barnaby Finch, Michael Fisher, Pat Kelley, and Neil Stubenhaus. They played regularly there for a year or two. How time flies. They were an unbelievable jazz group but everybody raved about Vinnie the most.
I saw VINNIE at the flying jib gig many many times it was down the street from where I lived in 1982 that’s where I got to know Vinny a little bit. I was always disappointed with Vinny was sending a sub because he was doing a session the night of the flying Jib gigs. But when Vinny was on the gig, it was pure magic! Also saw it was Jeff Berlin at Dantes around the same time he was still playing a Tama drum set then!

Vinnie is so talented, he has rhetoric, he's cool and calm. This musician has an exceptional background and I believe that through his talent he brings people to God.
I appreciate Vinnie talking about his faith in Jesus and need to defend them if they arise. As a Hindu American, I can relate to this attitude. Being a micro religious minority in the US, I've been asked many times to accept Jesus as my personal lord and savior. Of course, I do not subscribe to Christian doctrine/theology and decline this invitation. Often times, I am told I am going to hell as a result and that I will be prayed for as a means to scare me. Hindus generally don't go around attempting to convert others but will defend their beliefs if the fundamental principle of "mutual respect" is violated. Great interview with one of the world's best.
In the Catholic tradition vocal prayer consists of speaking, singing and playing music. With the right intentionality and internal dispositions I could see Vinnie's drumming as a prayerful expression: logos...
I love Coliauta's perspective on the necessity to observe music with spiritual eyes, as he said. To treat the art of music removed from mysticism is to then disregard the music of our past and the qualities it contained motivated by higher power concepts and then also to limit future musical invention to strict humanistic conventions that are inconsiderate of hope and ideals born from imaginative minds thus reducing songs to either exclusively market or industry based values or just as terrible inverted and narcissistic self oriented based song creations! A spiritual musician plays with an audible transcendental joy, the other void of such. Tell me I am wrong and with an example.
Hard to imagine the life as someone as talented and successful as Vinnie. An unreal life of success. The best playing with the greatest musicians in the world. Almost a life too good …there has to be some disconnect… I rarely understand anything he says…

I consider Vinnie a great drummer. But such a big surprise to find he is a faithful man. I used to be one as well ' till l found Carl Sagan 's book COSMOS. Music is an art that delivers freedom and wisdom. ' just can't imagine Hendrix, Miles or Trane following the Christian faith.

I remember a video "Drummer for jesus 2004" Vinnie said that during a festival, that he had specifically thanks jesus loud and clear in the microphone and that finally those who made the edit for the video cut out the part where Vinnie was thanking Jesus.
I think that was at the MD festival 2000 the final edit , edited out his praise of JESUS. I have a DAT of the unedited version. Eventhough the Van Horns publishers of MD were Christians????

Vinnie has to have the most misspelt & mispronounced surname in drumming. I remember seeing his name misspelled in a Simple Minds album sleeve that he sessioned on in the 90's. But we know Vinny has a good sense of humour.
First blush take on 'low information music' is that, well, just bare information *amount* seems like a secondary observation relative to what we want from music - how we measure goodness. Many of my favorite songs can be typed out on the piano with one finger. OK, you can say there's more info there, but then what? Good song = lots of info? I think maybe I don't get it..:-)
I also live in Akron Ohio now(i’m a transfer from Los Angeles California)! in the treetop complex, I came here to fly the Goodyear Blimp and I ended up out of work. That’s the life of MUSICIAN for you.
