i had some rly bad takes when i got my only DUI almost 10 years ago. blamed everyone but myself. it wasnt until i attended the required MADD "class" that my perspective changed. it was brutal. listening to these people who have had their family stolen, or have been the one to murder a car full of strangers. it changed me. i think everyone should have to sit through those speeches. it made it real, and not just something im reading online or hearing about. I think a lot less people would consider it an option to drink and drive if they experienced something like that.

Luckily, you have a heart and conscience and were able to change and for that I am immensely proud of you. There's someone from around where I live who is infamous for driving drunk because he's gotten in not one but TWO serious car accidents where he made it out unscathed but everyone in the cars died. He was drunk driving both times and much like you did at the time he didn't care that he literally murdered people because he was drunk (not saying you hurt anyone, just that you didn't care at the time about driving drunk). He had his license revoked but has still been seen driving WHILE drinking alcohol. It just infuriates me that he has so little of a heart that he's totally fine with the fact he's killed multiple people, two or three of which were children, and continues to drink and drive as if it's no issue.
TL;DR Thank you for having a change of heart and accepting responsibility because some people never will.

The egocentric people aren't going to admit they couldn't give a shit about drunk driving because they know it's illegal, so they'd escape it. Not only that, you think people who do the right thing are in the majority. You're wrong. A surprising number of people are egocentric and selfish, and even more aren't, but think to themselves "oh it's just one time, it won't do any harm" - and maybe 9 times out of 10 it won't do any harm, but it only takes that one time for a catastrophic collision to take out multiple people. You won't get PTSD from listening to people share stories about how drunk driving affected their lives, and they always give out therapy cards afterwards anyway in case you're deeply affected by something someone said.

Appreciate you bringing up this incident and being so straight with it Charlie. Here in Ontario, many community members of the Greater Toronto Area are still haunted by a terrible drunk driving incident from 2015 that involved a super-wealthy construction company heir crashing his vehicle into a car with three children (all under the age of 10) and their grandfather. The father of the children died last year, supposedly from taking his own life due to the unimaginable grief that the event caused to him and his family. The mother of the children, Jennifer Neville-Lake, is now completely alone. The punishment that the driver, Marco Muzzo, received was a slap on the wrist compared to the harm that he inflicted. His name continues to be present in local parks and in hospital wards due to his family's great wealth in the construction industry, and now he lives a quiet life outside prison. These kinds of people who actively decide to endanger others on the road like this are absolutely unforgivable. Best the rest of us can do is never forget, and never allow them to live it down.

There was a girl that couldn't be older than 20, who had her leg severed in the accident. She told my dad that she couldn't feel it, but to keep her calm, my dad asked her where she was headed home from... "Dance class." Was her answer.
It took 5 of the police officers on scene to keep him from straight up killing the bastard who couldn't put down the bottle... who just so happened to be perfectly fine, by the way.

but for the life of me i can't see why it's any different than drinking it at mass and then driving home, and why the mass scenario is presumably ok? i couldn't really tell what charlie's stance on that point was but it seemed like he felt mass situation was okay while bobby situation is not ok.
also note im really not trying to debate anyone or be a debate-bro or whatever; i'm genuinely asking for an explanation and don't plan to argue about it. if i really think about it, the best answer i can come up with is that drinking wine in mass is guaranteed to be only one sip, whereas swigging a bottle while driving can easily and often lead to more than just one swig. am i right, is that it?
also i agree what bobby did was wrong and i'm not completely sure he was sober and that was actually his first sip of the night. throughout my comment i'm not referring to bobby, but a hypothetical man who was sober and truly took his first sip of the night in the car vs a random guy in mass.

Once I had some and drove because I felt sober. It wasn't until I was five minutes in when the intoxicant REALLY hit me. I pulled over and cried harder than I have for almost my entire adult life, because I knew that I could have hurt someone with no bad intention on my part. I was almost sober when I started driving, but the intoxicant hit WAY harder than I thought when I started driving. Much love to everyone, please. I was taught more about fractions in second grade than I was about the nuances of driving while intoxicated. It blows my mind how casual our culture acts towards drink driving but how extremely we act against paedophiles and it doesn't make sense to me. Both are as evil as each other and should be condemned to the limits but because everyone drinks we pretend like it's not a problem. I imagine back when paedophilia was legal everyone pretended like it was fine too because everyone did it which shows how we convince ourselves through culture and measure our morality with mass appeal and personal values and not on truth and actuality.
Picture this for a second: A drink driver can hit a car, kill both of a child's parents in the most visually and mentally traumatising way you could imagine by literally tearing them into shreds and then leave that child paralysed and physically disabled for the rest of their lives. Paedophiles do the same thing, now let that sink in.

Charlie is indirectly helping to ruin this man’s career because Charlie was bored and had to make a video on it.

Just going to write an essay: If the majority of people truly feel this way about his decision to drink here, then it is about time you people have your voice heard and you take action to remove all BAC legal limit laws because you are contributing to an ambiguous legal state in America. If any amount is wreck less then why is there a legal limit at all? There is something referred to as the passage of time rule where driving near the legal limit (0.07) is reason enough to arrest for dui. If any at all is bad then there would not be so much legislation around this legal limit. Drinking a small amount and driving is not as bad as being smashed and driving and the current laws we have in place reflect that sentiment. Punching someone in the face once will net you a battery charge, punching someone in the face 25 times will net you an attempted murder charge. That's the way sips of alcohol and driving mostly are. 1 sip not so bad, 25 sips you're probably a threat to the people around you, and again the presence of a legal limit communicates this idea. Surely this streamer thought, "there is a legal limit right," before he took that sip. Unfortunately nobody was there to tell him that some people online are against legal limit laws and truly believe that any drinking at all while driving is just as immoral as being blacked out when driving. If your BAC is below 0.08 and are of legal drinking age you have a strong defense against DUI even if the officer decided to arrest you. Why is that? Because driving barely drunk and smashed are two different things. And btw Open container by itself is rarely an arrestable offense indicating a societal view that open containers are far less serious as well.

It's a stupid thing to do, and even more stupid to stream. I can't imagine how someone who has been personally affected by drunk driving would feel seeing this. Still, comparing him to actual drunk drivers is out of proportion.

It's about the visuals. Seeing someone drink while driving sends a very bad message to viewers, especially the younger audience, in itself. No matter if he was really drunk or not, the message "drinking and driving is okay, even cool, sometimes" relativises driving and drinking in a way that in the end may cause serious harm/injury to others.

Thank you Charlie for speaking on this. I have never understood drinking and driving myself, and how much we tolerate it in the US… It is a miracle both my parents are with me today, as they were hit head on by a drunk driver in December of 2021, after attending a late night Mass to go get some items from their home they were moving out of. The drunk driver that hit my parents, did not get any injuries, and even though he had been caught drinking and driving before, since it was his first caused accident, they let him chose when to serve his jail time…. And I sadly think he did not learn his lesson, and is going to continue his actions, until it gets someone killed… we really need to strengthen the laws in the US on this. Make it very harsh like Japan.

Given that impairment from ethanol was not a factor here, I consider streaming while driving to be a far greater risk than taking a swig of wine. Aside from the presumed 'open container' violation and any "message" that one imagines is being conveyed, this is exactly analogous to opening and taking a swig of a soft drink. It's funny how opinions and judgements cloud perceptions to create a difference where there is none.

My brother described him as a a popular, and kind guy who would help those who were struggling with the gym. One evening, he was walking by himself and was struck by a drunk driver, died at the moment. The coward fled but was later arrested. His mom set up a GoFund me for the funeral expenses.
