DISCLAIMER: THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE FLIGHT INSTRUCTION. SERIOUSLY. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO FLY, DON'T WATCH TH-cam; GO SEE A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR. CERTAIN SAFETY STEPS, LIKE THE PREFLIGHT INSPECTION, WERE COMPLETED BUT OMITTED FROM THE FINAL VIDEO BECAUSE WALKING AROUND A PLANE DOES NOT MAKE GOOD VIDEO CONTENT.
Recently I made a flight down to Huntsville, Alabama to see my good friend Alex Schon. We grab some of the best barbecue I've ever had at Melvin's Pit Barbecue (shout out to Melvin himself for serving us even though we arrived about 30 minutes before they actually opened), and then headed over to the US Space and Rocket Center. I had been here once before in 8th grade, but seeing it again as an adult added a completely new level of appreciation at the accomplishment of going to space!
Trips like this one are really what general aviation is all about. Huntsville is a 3 hour drive from my house. That would be a REALLY long day to drive for lunch and rockets. But hopping in the Cessna 210 made it a 55ish minute flight. General aviation really broadens the things you are able to do. You can't beat the flexibility either. Thanks for following along on my flying adventures!!

I'll have to check out that bbq place sometime. Also, they had some pretty incredible fireworks at the rocket last night for the 4th!

Got my units mixed up on that F-1 engine fact - 20 tons of fuel a second, about a million gallons of fuel in total, and 7.5 million pounds of thrust - still bananas! That’s a swimming pool a minute

Almost went with our second intro there but it lacked the confusion over the restaurant, which was a real high point of the video!

I wish I could ride in a plain like. I might get over my fear of hights if I do.

How does the door to door time compare? 3 hours drive vs 50 minute flight but what about drive to airport, preflight, travel at other end. I know wha which is more fun...

So this trip was about 120 nautical miles. The door to door time was probably about an hour and 45 minutes...so honestly maybe an hour-ish saved over driving. That ratio improves the longer the distance obviously with the real sweet spot being around 200-800 miles. Beyond that and commercial becomes more viable. No doubt the flying was more fun!

You don't need that much flaps, on such a light plane, on such a long runway.

The FBO was on the touchdown end of the runway so landing short helped there. Why on earth would I want to land longer or any faster? It was a greased landing and I was easily stopped within 1000 feet with virtually no use of brakes.
