- VOICES OF HOPE | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (December 8, 2024)
We are on the Second Sunday of Advent; and in today’s gospel reading, we hear of John the Baptist. According to Saint Luke, John ministered in the Jordan, proclaiming “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” He did this to prepare the people and the way of the Lord.
Interestingly, Saint Luke situates the ministry of John in the middle of political and religious events at the time. It was the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, with Pontius Pilate as governor of Judea. It was also the time of the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas. This invites us to consider world events as signs that the coming of the Lord is near, and we need to be attentive to the “voice of one crying out in the desert,” exhorting us to repent of our sins while encouraging us to hope for the salvation that God promised.
How do we read the social, political and religious events unfolding before us, brothers and sisters? Let us be attentive to the message of hope preparing the way of the Lord.

My dear brothers and sisters please do not hope for anything else . What shall be done now is to discard old tradition especially offerings to the lord like what the Jews did in the temple of Jerusalem making the house of god a market place .We shall discard offerings to the lord including Sinulog
It is difficult to see how this gospel can be a voice of hope when it points to mountains, valleys gorges etc.that should be levelled to prepare the way of the lord.I rather see this as an exhortation to discard old ways of life
