Sorry about the music. Unfortunately at time of recording the microphone was GoPro internal. The audio did not do this motor justice. I will try a follow up video with my new mic... stay tuned!
My dad has a couple of Suzukis, and he loves his. I am considering a 20 like yours. I have the Alaskan on a 14’, a 1994 split seat, and it is such a good boat. The rating is for a 40hp! That baby would fly. This 20ho should be a good match. Thanks for creating and sharing this video!
Nice vid! Our local lake limit is 20hp so I just bought a new 2022 Suzuki 20 with electric start and trim. I'm running a 1989 Alumacraft 16.5ft and I take 270 lbs of 2 big dogs out with me so my rig, gear, dogs and I easily clear 1000lbs. I get on plane but peak out just under 15 mph (24 Kmh). I ordered a an 8 pitch prop to try and I'm adding a hydrofoil but it could just be the physics of power to weight that has me maxed out. It's a great motor.
Good review Brian. I am trying to decide on a 20 HP 0r 30HP Suzuki for my 14' Livingston (fiberglass catamaran) - 350 pound boat plus people and gear. About the same weight as yours. The 30hp is 163 pounds 3 cylinder electric tilt 489 cc / 29 ci $4625 USD. - compared to the 20hp @ 96 pounds 2 cylinder manual tilt 327 cc / 20 ci and you are running 40.1 kph (25 mph) $3125 USD. My thought is do I really need that much more engine (30hp) and for what purpose? Top end speed? I think about initial cost, maintenance, efficiency, weight etc. in my comparison. Note: The only difference between the 25hp and the 30hp is the way the electronic fuel injection is set up. I am beginning to lean toward the 20HP for all the comparisons listed above. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Tim
Power tilt and trim would be nice. The year I bought mine... 25hp and up only. And an extra 10hp May be useful... but is it worth the extra $$$. With three men (600-700lbs) mine will slowly go on plane and higher throttles are required. For me, not a problem. Typically it’s me alone or with one other angler.
@@bgqc31 I have decided on the 30 as we cover some great distances and run off shore in the Pacific on flat days. The Straits of Juan de Fuca can get as rough as the ocean so after much consideration I need the go power to get home should the weather change quickly. In addition running a larger engine @ 75% is more efficient than running a smaller engine full throttle. The engine will have a longer life as well. Thanks for your input.
I just ordered a 25hp Suzuki for my new Alaskan 15 and I'm wondering does the non power tilt model have the shallow drive option like the new Yamaha where you can partially tilt the motor for shallow operation? BTW how do you like your Alaskan 15? Thanks
I've watched many reviews trying to get ideas for prop pitch for a couple of my outboard applications and that detail always seems to be missing from the reviews.
I have a boat similar 13.8 ft with 15 hp. With 2 batteries , 6 gallon fuel, trolling motor, myself with fishing gear. Max speed..13 mph.... something wrong? My max rpm is 3600-3800
I gotcha pal, I took mine back to the dealer and was told that the motor was fine ! Soon as you come off idle it feels like a vibration like a DA sander under my feet! I don't like it ! Burned 3 gallon of fuel and it set for a couple months now it overheating! I take care of my things and it was flushed out after every use ! I'll never buy another Suzuki because of this!
@@coldspring624 I sold it this morning and not happy with this motor! Easy on fuel smooth idle but as soon as it comes off idle it vibrates! I take care of my things but when plugged in the computer it only had 15 hours on.it
I got this exact motor on a carolina skiff j12 12 footer. And it won't catch a plane and goes slow and the front end stays up, idk what's wrong came to TH-cam for help tho. Saw this and this is how I feel like boat should be.
Thanks for watching. To be fair, the results are a little skewed by the overall weight in each test. The Mercury test included an additional passenger. It was my wife so for the sake of my marriage I won’t give an estimate of the weight difference. Trim angle, load distribution and water conditions will also have a direct effect on maximum speed.
If I get a chance I will shoot a short video with the same load as the Merc! You are probably right. I find no difference in power between a carbureted motor and EFI.
In theory the EFI should run more reliably, require less maintenance (no carbs to clean), and get a little better fuel economy. Also, it does open the door for tuning the power curves to some effect such as improving mid-range torque. At the top end, I doubt you will see much difference.
Here is the link to my latest video - Suzuki Speed Test #2 (same weight as Mercury test) The results may surprise you! th-cam.com/video/nLF0vfu-erA/w-d-xo.html
zekerduzzz I've got a 3.1 meter rib with Mercury 30hp two stroke, good for 36 knots one up or 33 knots two up. 36kts is around 68kph. It's not a boat you lend to people.
I was a little surprised, I figure that 20 hp Suzuki would of pushed that boat closer to a max speed of 30 mph. 40.1 kilo converted is 24.9 mph. That Smokercraft must be quite heavy boat. I have a 2016 1436 Alumacraft jon boat with a 1994 9.9 Johnson two-stroke outboard and with just me in the boat and all my gear plus front mounted trolling motor it will do 20 mph according to my GPS.
NLINE7 - you are correct... my Smokercraft is probably 2 times the weight of your Jonny. And Performance between two and four stoke has been discussed to death. Let us remember... these are not speed boats. 40km/h on flat water with no passengers is as fast as I really want to go. Add some chop and I am sure to throttle down. Be safe and fish on!
@@bgqc31 I agree 24-25 mph is still scooting along pretty good on the water for your Smokercraft. My 17 ft Tracker Deep V with a 1992 60hp Johnson will max out around 31-32 mph with two people in the boat and it's plenty fast for us. I like you 25-30 mph is fast enough for what I need.
From my own experience the beam of the boat is also a big factor in top speed. I have a Polarkraft DK1470L which is a 70" beam, I was really surprised at the power needed to get on the plane compared to narrower and flatter bottomed boats. I'm at altitude too so probably not going to go much over 20mph with a 20hp, still trying to get the best propeller pitch. Jon boats are flat bottomed and generally lighter. Your boat is 80lbs lighter than mine, 15" narrower, that makes a big difference regarding motor power. I have a 9.9 Evinrude I use on an inflatable the fact it's so much lighter than a 20hp 4 stroke engine, probably close to half, is also a big factor in not weighing the stern down so much.
20hp Suzuki 2021 not worth a pinch of puppyshit vibrates and after 3gallons of fuel overheating! Been flushed good and after a couple months of not using now overheating
Oh like we all wanted the speed in kilometers.. Oh yea were all brittish. 25 mph is quite slow for a 20 hp motor on a light boat like that. My 10 hp 1963 evinrude sportwin 2 stroke will push that boat around that speed. 20hp should of did at least 30 to 35 mph. On a Light v bottom .
Sorry you had to do a simple conversion to mph. And I think you may be overestimating your unproven speeds from a 10hp motor. Less comments from you and more videos proving your claims. But thanks non the less from a CANADIAN!
@@bgqc31 ohhh your from canada.. Ok i understand why it was not in mph. My speed is tested at 18 mph with evinrude 10 hp. 24.9 mph for my fellow Americans.
You can shut the motor off by pressing and holding the red kill switch button.
Yes! But as a fisherman, the first thing I do after I hit the honey hole is detach!

the way he has the kill cord attached to him is the most safest way to operate the boat, as the kill cord will cut the engine if he goes overboard.
