I'm in Florida where it's hot. I talked to you a few months ago about my ac .it was not coming on .no power to thermostat come to find out it was the float crazy. Had power in the air handler but no power at thermostat and just had ac man here a week ago. Because of you I have learned to do it your self. The ac man told me everything looks good and that will be 157 bucks lol a week later I fixed it me self .i love your channel thank you

That happens often to me in Florida. Condensate pan under the evaporator coil in the air handler needs to drain out of the house, if not it shuts down the control power to the system.
      Keep those drains open!

As a builder with 40 years of experience I get fairly tired explaining sump pumps to people .... a basement is like a swimming pool with a roof ... any hydro-static pressure building in the ground water table around it will force it's way in the path of least resistance ... most small pumps can handle seasonal ground water tables building under slabs ... but for my own houses I install 1or 2 large pumps on dedicated circuits that can handle a sustained deluge for a few days and run 2 separate 2 in lines 60 ft away from the house heading downhill ... all sounds good until you loose power, without an automatic whole house generator or manually set up one you're screwed ... had a wall street millionaire client who installed 2 redundant generators as backup in his mansion, smart guy (and handy) he had 4 sump pumps ... bad storm knocked out power and both brand new and expensive Generac's failed to fire, it poured cats and dogs all night, he had 6 in of water in the basement .... I showed up the next day for something else and he was absolutely livid ... the installer showed up and got his ass reamed ... Generac tech showed up and both control boards were fried with no explanation from the tech ? ... my other favorite sump pump failure is one that's simply not plugged in to the outlet ... that's a pretty easy diagnosis ... like here, blocked floats are another

I have had my share of flooding nightmares due to either a failed sump pump, too much rain for the sump pump to keep up, or power loss. After each incident, I learned something and implemented something new. Keep in mind, the majority of water coming into my house comes from 2 places. A gutter downspout in the back that went straight into the ground and a 40 degree yard incline in my backyard. All that rainwater just flows down the hill, pools on my back patio, and eventually ends up in my sump well. So...
When my original pump failed due to the float arm rusting and falling off and flooded my basement, I had a new 1/3hp installed.
When I had a horrid downpour, the new 1/3hp pump couldnt keep up and flooded my basement, so I put a 1/4hp submersible in there on its own float switch.
When I had a 3 day power outage during a bad winter, I bought a 9000watt gas generator. We had a power outage during a rainstorm that spring, and the generator came in handy preventing another flood, but that only works when youre home. So I got a 2000watt inverter with a auto transfer switch and a couple 100ah marine batteries for the pumps just in case the power goes out when im not home. That came in handy a couple times.
The next year, another horrid downpour and the pumps couldnt keep up. Luckily no flood thanks to my quick use of a shop vac.
This time I decided to stop effin around. So....
I dug a 25ft long trench in my backyard at the base of the hill and installed a french drain. I then rerouted the downspout and french drain into a 3ft deep dry well that i dug out along the side of my house. I then got a 1HP sump pump and installed that next to my 1/3HP pump, with the 1/4hp as a backup.
No flooding so far and the incoming water to the sump well has reduced significantly since i dug the trench and dry well.

Installed power to a customer for 2 sump pumps. One in new basement and other in 4 car garage. Told him to make sure plumber Installs identical pumps with same length of pipe to union and to purchase a pipe wrench to swap them out. By second year basement pump failed and when he went to swap out pumps one pump had pipe a foot longer and he could not remove pipe with cheap slip joint pliers he purchased. Also told him to have a battery back up sump pump installed in basement but waited until a lot of things got damaged from several inches of water. Can't fix stupudity. Always told people to run clean water thru sump pumps every 3 months and test them before major storms.

You seen those backup sump kits that tie into your water distribution system and when electric gets shut off and no backup generator the thing automaticslly opens a valve and it uses the water pressure to make a venturi and it sucks the water out then keeps the drain going with syphon action.. pretty fancy stuff.. worth a look.. only bitch about it is you have to tie your sump pump into your water system so gotta have pipe by the pump, although i guess you could use a hose..

Putting those valves on with the bleeder is a waste of time and money, and also creates a leak hazard. Just put a regular gate valve in or better yet a ball valve. When preparing for winter, shut the shut off valve off and open the sill all the way, the water inside will evaporate long before the winter freeze comes and if the is any stray water left in the sill, which there shouldn’t be, it will expand out the open sil. Been doing this forever and was taught this from my grandfather and never once had a broken frozen pipe.

In what part of the world do you live in ! For the part of where I live and Steve lives , winter is late most of the time and I myself don't turn off the outside water supply until just about winter and it's never good to let water stand in copper pipe rather it is pressurized or not, ice expands that copper pipe even if leave the outside faucet in the open position plus the damage it causes to the inside of the faucet from the ice expansion it's always a good idea to install a shut off valve with a back drain and in most parts of the United States it is Code for outside faucets. My experience with many failures of the Zorllerr pumps is that many times? Just a simple vibration of the pump or the PVC pipe will start a frozen pump to begin pumping. I think that's what you see in several of your pump failures. I think the most reliable solution is not to replace the pump or replace the switch with another switch, but instead change to the optional electronic only switch for the m53, the LN type switch. It is a piggyback switch where you have to directly plug in the pump and it always on condition into the cord for the electronic switch. The reliability is far far far far better than the mechanical switch!

If the guy lives on a hill why not ditch the sump pump all together and just run a 3 inch drain pipe downhill to somewhere from the bottom of the pit. water rushes in and immediately drains away with no issues or electricity. This has been done in my house over 70 yeas ago, the 4 inch cast iron line was put in in the pit in basement at the same time as the foundation was poured. it runs underground to a nearby ditch that goes to a lake. I sometimes go to check and and the water is pouring into the pit and it rushes down the hole. I once plugged it with a stopper and let the entire basement fill up with two feet of water. I used that to scrub down all the dirt from the floor and walls and then I unplugged it and a huge whirlpool formed and it was a unsatisfying sight to see it drain away, almost like a humongous tub draining, I checked trough the window and I could see the ditch about 50 meters away bubbling

Nothing worse than water in your basement, unless it's sewage water. When they built my house in 98 my builder asked if I wanted to pay for stone under the foundation for water drainage, I had already spent every dime I had saved just to get that far. But, I gave them the money they wanted and I've never had water in my basement to date. My neighbor had to put in French drains, a couple pumps with battery backup and a generator (BIG MONEY) so I guess a few loads of stone was the right choice... I think your customer may have had a leak from the gate valve bleeder being off and the snow melting at the same time, maybe the one pump couldn't keep up and the other ones float couldn't trip with a garden hose jammed in it? Homeowners often create their own problems, I've created many myself...

  • @davenz000
    @davenz000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The guy was more distraught about lost stuff. Lesson, don't store important things in a basement (as someone else said) an empty swimming pool with a roof, certainly not under water lines and keep stuff up as high as possible. Consider having a backup gasoline pump (to use outside) and / or a backup (not installed) electric pump and gas generator / high capacity battery backup pack.

Steve, since you were kinda wondering what "woke" even means, the definition is actually pretty simple.
These days woke is mainly used by Fox News viewers and conservative news readers, and it means "stuff that annoys conservatives." That's it. So as you guys move on from one carefully designed, media-created outrage to the next, the thing that is "woke" will change accordingly. Pay attention when you're watching Fox if you don't believe me, and keep putting out the great content that we all love. :)
