My CABIN PROJECT (Roof Framing 1) - Wk 5
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.พ. 2025
- This week I have gotten a good start on framing the roof system. The winters are long and the days are short here in the interior of Alaska. There are several months when the sun does not rise very high in the sky before going down again. In order to capture all possible sunlight, I am building south-facing, clerestory windows that will flood the full length of the cabin with natural light.
For the past two weeks the weather has been wonderful, but the forecast this week is for colder weather again, and there is a call for snow this Friday. I may have to get my warm hat out again.
As a side note, I am working on my website and should have it opened within a couple of weeks. It should make it easier to communicate with everyone. I will be posting my cost, notes and sketches for this project as I go along. I think the information will be interesting and useful for many people.
As always, thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful week my friends.
If only I could have met a man like you many years ago. An intelligent, brave, strong, caring, gentle and good looking. A caring man who is there for his family and his dog Stella who loves him dearly. Break time enjoying Stella with kisses, hugs and treats. God Bless you and Family and as you say PEACE!
Good evening from Alaska my friend. You are so complimentary and kind. I thank you for that. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment as well. It is no small thing but I read every comment and respond to as many as possible. So please continue reaching out. Peace to you tonight. Gale
Saludos está quedando super bien 👍👌
Thank you so much.
Mate, hurry up and get building so i can watch another amazing video haha 👍🏻.
The past 5 parts have been an absolute pleasure to watch, thank you.
Andy from NorthWest England
Thank you Andy. I will get to it my friend. There is certainly enough to keep me busy. See you soon.
@@ThisIsMyAlaska youre welcome brother. I look forward to it. Thank you.
Greetings, my friend! I wish you health and good luck!).
Beautiful work building your cabin.like your dog stella😉
Thank you very much Marie!
Thanks for video 👍👍👍
You are certainly welcome my friend.
One man work must be very careful, no no accident, clear the walk path is very important
Amazing job, beautiful dog 👍
Thank you so much. Stella is a Standard Poodle.
You must be a multi-millionaire to be building with lumber right now. Just kidding , cabin looks great brother. SOLID. Best wishes from Theresa & Jason.
Hello my friends. Lumber prices are extremely high, I agree. I enjoy the challenge of trying to build and hold the cost in line with my budget. I do a lot of horse trading for sure. I plan to post my cost for the project on my website because I think it will be useful to those interested in building a similar cabin. Of course, I do not have any labor expenses. I will be doing all my own mechanical and electrical, septic, water well and service entrance in addition to the carpentry aspect. There is a lot of saving on the labor side of the project.
Love this no nonsense challenge. Nice work sir.
I mean channel 🤪
Thank you Linda. It is great to have you keep my company while I work. Have a wonderful week.
great video.....hang on Stella!! 😁
brother, before going to work, I wanted to see chapter number 5 and I really liked the project, you are doing very well, it is being super happy day we will talk to each other tomorrow super super greetings sergio
Thank you very much for sharing, here we are in the middle of the torrid Indian summer and May they call the month of the god of fire Agni JAJAJJA, is okay, we have electricity and air conditioning, a pleasure to see you with what conscience to work, you take your blessed coffees accompanied by the pretty dog.
I am sorry for my English but I am of Spanish nationality.
A warm hug full of gratitude.
Aww,,, Good morning my dear friend. I just love your comment. Don't ever apologize for your wonderful English (It is far better than my Spanish). I looked up the God of Fire Agni, and spent some time reading. It is fascinating to be sure. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write as well. Have a blessed (and cooler) week Uma. Talk to you soon.
It all looks professional.
And i like the patience you have.
Gerat job!
Ron Amsterdam Holland
Good evening Ron. Thank you so much for watching from the City of Canals! Greeting to you from Alaska my friend.
Que avance!!,quedará muy bonita tu cabaña!😉👍🇦🇷
Your abilities to do all this alone is just amazing. You are a gifted man. Your family is quite blessed. It's so sweet when your dog and grandkids come hang out. ❤️❤️. The cabin is looking great.
Thank you Brenda. I appreciate you watching and am humbled that you enjoy my work. I am spending this weekend with my eight-year-old grandson up in the mountains, working on a new building project. I will be showing you that video this next week. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.
It's an absolute pleasure to watch you building this log cabin step by step. Your content is decompression for the mind and soul. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you Stephen. I am so glad you are enjoying my channel. Welcome to Alaska my friend.
very well said
Thank you for responding to my message. I was very surprised to have a response. I thought they removed my message because it wasn't good enough to send. I felt bad about it. I live in NYC and it's not the greatest live here. More crime and lots of noise. In my youth I wanted see Alaska but never made it. Watching you work and looking at the sites makes my day. Thank you and be safe
Muy buen trabajo....esta quedando hermoso!!
Thank you my friend. I appreciate your encouragement. See you next week.
Looking Good! Look forward every week to the progress. Thanks again
Thanks so much Elizabeth. I appreciate the encouragement. With the warmer weather I should pick up some speed. See you next week.
Hi friend my name is John, I recently started watching your videos, watching your videos with the pandemic makes it easier to carry out the confinement, I subscribed to receive notifications as soon as you upload them, I send you a big hug from Monterrey Mexico.
What a good carpenter you are, just be careful friend!
Good morning John. Greetings from Alaska. I am glad you are here on my channel. Let me know if you have any questions. Take care.
Hallo du hast es super gebaut. PS. ALBER
Thank you so much my friend. Warm greetings from Alaska
I like what your adding, south-facing, clerestory windows
Hello Kevin. Yes, this cabin is down in the flats close to the river so the trees around it tend to block out the winter sun (the little we do get). The high windows will provide a lot of natural lighting the full length of the cabin.
BEAUTIFUL JOB, GREAT ROOF LINE‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Thank you. I think it will compliment this cabin well. I appreciate you watching the build.
I love your dog he is so beautiful
Thank you my friend. Stella's about to get her spring haircut. You will be surprised at how little she actually is under that shaggy mess she's wearing. I love her curls, but they are getting too hot for her now so it's about time.
You had me with the plywood on the ridge beam for awhile. Great work.
Plenty of overhang on the rafters. Which I like a lot.
Thanks so much Clint. I am glad you are enjoying the build. I think you will like the finished roof design. It will really open up the interior of this relatively small place. See you soon my friend.
This is impressive. 1 man building a log cabin with high ceilings and details. Very Cool
Thanks so much Scott. I am glad you are enjoying the cabin build. I certainly enjoy making the videos and having the opportunity to meet and talk with so many wonderful folks. I enjoy it very much. Have a great week and feel free to ask questions too. I love to talk about building projects.
How far is this cabin from the other one?
Sq ft size, how much bigger will this one be?
And lastly will this become your permanent cabin...guess I should call it a home and company and family use the other one on holidays? Thank you.
Love the south facing lights for natural interior lighting, won't be long now before you're dry in hopefully Mother Nature won't be too fickle this week !!! Your craftsmanship is A+ my friend have a great weekend !!
Good morning Arlene. Mother nature was in a bad mood last night. It snowed all night. Today should be interesting for sure. Have a wonderful week.
I look forward to see how this is going to turn out. Great job love the dog beautiful 😍 ❤
Thank you for the video. Take care of yourself. Alone building a house .... not joke.
Thank you. I will take care. I appreciate the kind words.
Hi there. I must say it would probably help a lot if I read you descriptions about what you’re doing before watching because I was confused about the plywood up there. Live and learn lol. Really like the windows up there.
As I watched I thought how great it would be if everyone had your work ethics, and skills I must say. This is looking amazing already. Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video.
Have a great weekend 👍🏾❤️💯. Hugz
Good morning Tonniece. I do appreciate you following me along through this project. The weather turned colder this week and today I woke up to snow everywhere again. I though I had seen the last of it for this winter. Oh well! I guess I need to get my warm hat out again. Have a wonderful week my friend.
Thanks for sharing a very nice video!
You are welcome my friend. I appreciate you watching my work. Take care and see you next week.
That open fire is awfully close to that nicely piled wood !
You have won the game of life my friend! I look forward to each every video you publish. Your love of the simple things in life is what I enjoy the most. You're a skilled builder with a keen imagination for what you want. Although not the wilds you live in, I grew up in rural Maine, and I admired the many craftsmen who had similar talents to you in my youth. Love the affection you and your dog have for one another; truly attached at the hip! God Bless You and your family, and I look forward to watching your cabin build progress. Cheers!
Thank you so much for your comments. One day I would love to visit Maine and Acadia National Park. I would love to see that beautiful coastline I have read about. Also, I could spend a lot of time looking at the architecture and craftsmanship of that area. Thank you for writing my friend. See you next week.
Jeez man, you get a lot done for a bloke on his own. Good to see you have time for the dog too.
Good morning Simon! Thanks so much for watching. It is coming along for sure. I hope to get this roof on before the spring rains start. The weather this next week looks great. See you soon.
Saludos está quedando super bien 👌👍
I was gonna say! I think the difference is that The Outsider and My Self Reliance etc source and mill their own lumber, whereas I think this guy buys his. That’s not a read btw! Neither way is right or better, just different. And it’s really nice in this instance cause BAM the structure is almost complete already!
But tbh I could be talking rubbish!
You sir…are a one man crew…nice job!
Thank you, friend. Peace to you.
A beautiful location for a cabin.
Thank you Lona. It is tucked back into the big evergreens. I don't really want to clear any away but I will have to cut a few in the end I think.
Wao...how much it remains belt now.. amazing views..👍👍💐💐🌹🌹
I like the way you working. Nice job.
Thank you very much my friend. See you next week.
We’ve been watching you and I mentioned, jokingly, “I wonder if he ever goes to the gym”.... My nephew he IS THE GYM. So now we all call you Jim. I especially enjoy watching you work. I’ve presumed that both cabins are yours. At first I thought the cabin near the trees was a job you were doing for someone else. But seeing your Corp yard so close I now imagine it is yours especially with the grandkids coming by as they do. I built one house by myself and wish I could do as you are doing. Am getting long in the tooth at this point.
Is your sweet dog a doodle type or a poodle? Our Bernice Mountain dog was killed by a truck last year at 6 years of age. Miss her largely and enjoy seeing your interactions with your companion.
You look and sound like a great grandpa as you interact with the grandkids. Cheers. I enjoy the building vids but also enjoy the fishing trips etc. I haven’t caught a fish in 60 years and don’t think they even live in the water anymore. I always look longingly at the rivers etc when we go up to Oregon. Etc. We watch from Eureka, CA. Was wondering what lake you were near where you run materials out with your snowmobile in the winter? I saw that UHMW type sled you use to slide over the snow advertised here. Makes a lot of sense.
I enjoy your ability to do everything from wood to elec to plumbing and camping as well as igloo building etc.... I was a boatwright for years before becoming an RN. Working on boats I was able to do anything related to them which was very satisfying. I assume you are a contractor up there. Spent some time in Alaska in the Coast Guard so I understand it’s beauty somewhat.
Take care Jim (Gym)....
Good evening Tim. Your comments made me chuckle. You are never too old to have an adventure. I advise you to jump right in. Stella is a purebred Standard Poodle. She is hands-down the best dog I have ever known; pure joy. You've got to do some fishing my friend. Life has a way of going away (especially at our age). Grab a grandkid and head to the lake. I love reading about boat building and have a small collection of books about boat building, mostly sailing boats. I was a contractor here if many years, but have worked for the State of Alaska for the past 18 years, building and renovating remote school facilities. I am nearing retirement. Thanks for writing. Peace to you my friend. - Jim.
@@ThisIsMyAlaska Thanks for your response. Your signature “Jim” gave me a chuckle too. My wife needs me with her due to disabilities and dementia so no fishing for now. Someday an adventure hopefully. Happy days my friends Stella and Gail (sp?). Tim
I really love watching your videos!! I get a little bummed though when it ends. Can't wait for the next one. Stella is beautiful and so sweet. Thanks for sharing all of your hard work.
You are welcome my dear friend. I am glad you are following me though this cabin project. I am enjoying it tremendously.
In the next week or so I am going to add some variety and introduce you to my daughter-in-law Marcie. She is an interesting girl. I have been working on a video of her and I am excited to share it. Let me know what you think.
@@ThisIsMyAlaska Sounds fantastic! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I'm looking forward to meet Marcie and the continued progress of your cabin. Have a great weekend.
You my friend are a beast,
Bet you sleep well,Be safe and love, love your vids. From Florida God Bless.
Thanks a bunch Sydney. I am glad you are enjoying my channel all the way from the Sunshine State. Warm greetings from Alaska.
Wow genial estar en un lugar tranquilo ☺️,y en compañía de un hermoso perro!!
Thank you for commenting my friend. Stella is a pure-bred Standard Poodle. She is the smartest dog I have ever known. I love her so much.
Thanks for another enjoyable video! Your children are very blessed to have all that knowledge from you passing on to them.
GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER YOU ARE A 1 MAN GANG!!!.I HOPE YOU CAN SHARE YOUR EXTREME TALENTS WITH THE YOUNG ONES.!!!!!!
Thank you Juan. I appreciate the blessing. I do love working with my children and grandchildren any chance I get. I am looking forward to a great summer with them.
@@ThisIsMyAlaska SIR I WISH YOU AND ALL OF YOUR FAMILY NOTHING BUT THE BEST. YOU ARE A CREDIT TO MANKIND AND THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF ALL THE GOOD THAT GOD EXPECTS FROM HIS CHILDREN.RESPECTFULY SUBMITTED YOUR BROTHER IN CHRIST.
The cabin is on the way up and boom. Your friend Yusef from Libya
Thank you Yusef. This is awesome, I now have a friend in Libya!
Looking real good I like the way your building your cabin no talk and all work.
Thanks Jeff. I enjoy this style of filming so much. I like the natural sounds and much prefer them to my voice. Thank you for the encouragement.
Awesome work ! I can see the love between dog n man .
Thank you Cristina. Stella is such a great friend. I do adore that rascal!
amazing skills bro so nice to watch how you fix it wow
Thank for watching my dear friend. It is great to have your company here.
It's really looking good. Awesome job sir!!! Stella looks good.
Thank you my friend. Stella is getting her spring haircut very soon. It always makes me smile when I see how small she looks without all that hair. It seems to double her size.
I find myself tapping the screen to see how much longer I still have left to thoroughly enjoy each video that you post !! Your channel quickly became one of my favorites to watch ! And I watch several channels ! Lol. Going to be an absolutely beautiful cabin and always a pleasure seeing Stella ! Have a great week and take care 😁
Hello Tony. I don't know what to say. I am honored by your compliments for sure. My intent for the channel is to broaden out in my content this summer. I want to show you (and all my viewers) Alaska as I experience it. It want to share the summer activities I enjoy so much, including our annual salmon fishing, trips to Valdez, Hooligan fishing, visits to several historic gold mines and perhaps a fall moose hunt. I also want to introduce you all to my large family (it will take a while). They are an interesting bunch. I would like your feedback to all this. Would that type of content be interesting to you or are you more interested in the building/project style of videos only?
I really enjoy the building aspects of your channel for sure but I’m sure we’d all enjoy any other parts of your life you share with us ! Family. Adventures. All of it. I think that’s the beauty of having so many different channels to watch on TH-cam is the varied content from each person. Have a great day ! And hey ... what’s your first name ? Haven’t seen it any of the comments. Lol
I must say that this is an interesting build. Half way through the video and I can’t figure it out. I am sure the finished product will be gorgeous. Nice to see the snow finally melting. Have a great weekend
Same, not getting what that plywood is for... I'm guessing there's a good reason.
Good evening Tom. This is a clerestory roof. The sunlight in the winter is very limited and I want as much natural light in the cabin as possible. These clerestory windows are south facing and will provide natural light the full length of the cabin. I think you will like the finished roof line. It is not your typical cabin look.
Hello Sir.
It was wonderful raising long timber last week .And this week, you have been making roof for yourself too.
I think always, your preparation is good, your working spot is clean, and you can use many vehicles perfectly.
I have started to repairing my motor scooter, left over one year, mainly generator.
Say hello to miss Stella. She is very
even and loving you.
Please don't injure yourself. Take care.
Thank you so much my kind friend. I am glad you are enjoying my cabin project. Let me know how the progress goes on your scooter. I love working on motorcycles and snowmobiles too. See you next week.
I am sorry, I mistook to use a ward "even".
I mean "Stella is mild character".
Please don't be upset.
Wall looks good.
Thank you Terry. Have a great week my friend.
I am glad that you uploaded it earlier this week .I was looking for something interesting to watch this evening. Nice to see your roof taking shape .
Have a great weekend!
You are welcome Nay. It's always great to hear from you. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Talk to you soon my friend.
Hello from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thanks for sharing your great video’s please keep them coming.

Thank you Brenda. Have a wonderful evening.
Hi, my friend. I like your job🤗🤗🤗
Great progress!
Thanks so much Michael!
Good Afternoon Gale - I was intrigued all the way thru this video. It was really cool to see the way the roof was coming together. You accomplished a lot with your video this week. Great entertainment and amazing work. Have a great week end. Regards, Randy in Arizona
Good afternoon Randy. I always enjoy reading your comments. So encouraging. The weather looks good for the next week and I think i can almost complete the roof framing in that timeframe. It will be interesting work. I enjoy it very much. Have a great week my friend.
wonderful ,exceptional❤👍
Thank you so much my friend. See you next week.
Thank you for the info on Dry creek mill
Any time!
Every video to this point is amazing.. you are blessed with multiple skills.. I like the natural sounds on your videos.. I can't wait the finished cabin..
Thank you, Thank you my friend👍
Thank you for keeping me company as I build this project my friend. You are more than welcome to ask questions about this project or Alaska in general and I will do my best to answer them. Have a great evening.
It's amazing what one man can do.
Good morning my friend. I love the work though. Being alone in the woods is a wonderful experience.
Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super Super gebaut Super Qualität super Qualität top danke für deine Videos. Ps Albert aus Deutschland

Good morning. Yes, Stella is a dear friend. She always makes me smile.
Thanks again for the awesome videos. They're a pleasure to watch.
You are so welcome my friend. I love creating them for you. See you soon.
Wow! All the snow is GONE! I hope you enjoyed that Alaskan warm up :)
Yes I do. It was one of the fastest warm ups on record. We were all worried about potential flooding but so far so good.
Awesome job.The log cabin luck very good.Thank you for enjoyable video.
You are so welcome for the video my friend. Thanks for sending me your comments too.
Awesome progress!! Along with your furry buddy❤ Did I see I glimpse of another project in the background 🙌 exciting. Keep up the great work.
Good evening my friend. This piece of property is located along a small airstrip. I am getting ready to clear a road back to the airstrip and build a second cabin back there. It will be a few months before I start though, I have my hands full here at the moment.
Such hard work. It looks lovely and I just dare for the wind to find a crack to get through. 😏
Thanks Nancy! Yes, I agree. It is going to be snug. See you next week my friend.
Loving the progress from week to week. Exciting to see the final build.
Thanks for following me on this build Greg. It is always a pleasure to hear from you.
I stumbled upon these videos and enjoy watching the build. The best part is seeing a Standard Poodle in such a different environment from where I live with my Poodle. We're in Florida and it seems like such a world away but mine would probably love snow if I gave her the chance to play in it.
Good morning Ashley. Thanks for watching from the Sunshine State. Yes, turns out poodles do love to play in the snow. Stella does not like to be out for long periods of time in very cold weather though. I watch her closely and make her wear a coat and boots when it below zero.
U no how to build a cabin u a master builder
Thanks so much my friend.
OHhhhhh we got a little peek at the nearby water! I can't wait to see what that reveals itself to be :D I don't ask questions (here) because I certainly ask plenty while watching and then in time they are answered. I am truly enjoying the mystery of the process. Thank you for sharing!
Hello Ginger! This little cabin is located on the side of a private airstrip that is bordered on one side by a seasonal slough. The slough fills in the spring and has wild ducks and other waterfowl on it, the slowly dries up toward fall. It is a wonderful wetland area. I will show you more at summer approaches. Take care my friend.
what talent you have, great job
Que hermoso todo lo que haces en Soledad, te felicito ,,no puedo creer ,eres increíble y muy guapo jaja un abrazo desde Argentina!!!!
Thank you my friend. You are so kind. I am glad to have your company while I build. Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them. Warmest hugs from Alaska.
Wonderful workmanship!
Thank you Chui! I am so pleased you are keeping me company as I build. Let me know if you have any questions for me. Have a wonderful week.
A master build by a master builder. Going up and up, your place is going to look awesome.
Thank you Marty. I appreciate your comments a lot. I think you will like the finished roof line. I should be almost done with it next video. We will see,,, Have a great week my friend.
Beautiful continuation of the work also this week. Curiosity is for when it will install skylights, because as I could see in your previous videos, the snow is in impressive quantities and I was thinking about when it melts and the subsequent drip.. I'm sure you'il be able to make up for it and I want to see how. Anyway, with nothing to take away from you and your hard work, Stella is the star of the videos. 🐶 It's of disarming sweetness, and funny when it jumps into the snow inside the beautiful final sunset. Thank you so much for offering us these spectacular corners of the world. A warm greeting from Italy 🤗🇮🇹😊
Thank you my friend. It is so good to hear from you. You are correct, we do get a lot of snow here. The clerestory windows will have to have the snow shoveled away from them a couple of times each winter to prevent the snow from blocking the sunlight. It should take me about 30 minutes each time to accomplish. It's just a fact of life up here and I am used to it. The windows will be plenty watertight though, I will make sure of that. Have a wonderful week my friend. Warmest wishes from Alaska.
watching your video so relaxing specially this pandemic .all negative news around. thank you for you for sharing your hard work 👊💪🏘️ GOD BLESS 🙏🙏
Great job
Thank you my friend.
YOU KNOW HOW TO WORK! GOOD MAN!
Great job, no doubt! That is put a couple of balls to the life!! Greetings sir. Congratullations

Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words. Take care my friend.
Excelente casa hiciste ,mis felicitaciones!!!
Thank you so much my friend. Have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you so much Tracy.
You are inspiration! Your cabin is perfect. I can't wait to see it finished. Excellent work. Thanks for sharing these videos.
You are welcome my friend. Please let me know if I can answer any questions you may have. I love the discussion.
Really appreciate your hard work and dedication. Love to watching your vlogs. It gives so much relaxation and happiness . God bless you and your family ❤️
You are welcome Rajani. I am glad you are following along. TH-cam is such a new experience for me but I find that I enjoy it very much, especially the conversations with folk all around the world. It is just the greatest hobby. Have a wonderful week.
Hi my friend I hope you are fine , this house looks bigger and larger I can't wait to see how its will turn out and I can picture it as a beautiful cozy comfortable place , well done my friend I keep going we are all with you till the end of the building
Thank you my friend. I think this place will look larger than it is because of the high ceilings perhaps. It is 385 sf inside so its fairly small by most standards. It will be super cozy and cute inside though.
Parabéns ao construtor dessa cabana que está ficando maravilhosa a cada dia gostaria de ter uma cabana neste modelo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hallo du hast es super gebaut und so schön ist das Haus
Thanks so much Albert, and good morning from Alaska. It looks like a great day outside (a little overcast though).
Jestem oczarowana tym, co Pan robi. Pozdrowienia z Polski🇵🇱🙂
what
Always like looking at you build. Hope to see more .
Perfect timing! I was looking for something to watch this evening and your video popped up. Fascinating to see the roof starting to take shape. I’m already looking forward to cabin building week 6! Enjoy your week creating another beautiful building.
Aww,,, I am so glad to know you are enjoying the cabin build. It means the world to me. See you shortly my friend.
That stream is lovely. Stella didn't look too thrilled with the snow, she'd rather lay by the fire. :) Great job, looking really good.
Haha! Yes, I think she broke though the ice layer there for a minute. She kind of hopped through it. She is a rascal.
