Paul Pierce - Phenomenal Footwork/Old Man Game (Late Career Highlights)

  • Paul Pierce. The Truth. NBA Champion. 2008 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player. 10x NBA All-Star. 2009 All-NBA Second Team. 3x All-NBA Third Team. 2010 Three Point Shooting Champ. The Boston Celtics SECOND All-Time leading scorer. His #34 was retired by the Celtics in 2018.
Paul Pierce’s arsenal had always had aspects of the old man game, even dating back to his time in Kansas. It begins, as everything does, with the footwork. Pierce hardly puts a foot wrong offensively. Paul’s pump fakes can pierce any undisciplined defender. He punished punier defenders on the back down. He out-quicked bigger defenders. He had face ups and stepbacks and stepthroughs galore. He had a great ability to read defenses and had comfort creating his shot just about everywhere on the court. He’ll bump and nudge and lean to get the angle he wants and there wasn’t very much anyone could really do. Paul was strong and ran through guys when given the chance. His old man game lulled some into believing he didn’t have just a little bit of bounce. His jumper was sweet - certainly not as sweet as HE thinks it is, but sweet nonetheless.
Something that has always impressed me about Pierce was his durability FOLLOWING a life treating incident. From 2000 to 2006, here are the number of games he played each season: 82-82-79-80-82-79.
Pierce spent the first FIFTEEN (15) years of his career in Boston but then played for the Brooklyn Nets, the Washington Wizards, and the Los Angeles Clippers after that. He would eventually sign a contract with the C’s so he could retire as a Celtic, but he had a few stops in between. This video is largely about what happened in those post-Boston days, but there are a few C’s highlights here and there. The clips here are past Paul Pierce’s prime. The oldest highlights available here are from 2008, when he was 30-31 EXCEPT the ones with the compressed screen - those are from 06.
I’ll be honest with you - I almost didn’t make this video because while “The Truth” is Paul’s nickname, the things he says sometimes as an “analyst” are the furthest things from it. In his mind and on Game of Zones, he'll be the GOAT, but only ever in those places.
The clips are from just about everywhere. Shout out to @FreeDawkins from the Dawk Ins days and @GD's Latest Highlights back before going big time.
Before you ask, yes, it's 9 minutes and 34 SECONDS intentionally. That's the truth.

Paul Pierce had an aesthetically pleasing game man. His spins, misdirections, fakes, and jumper were awesome to watch. He’s absolutely underrated by many casual fans who know him as the crazy commentator guy

He also got to the rim well, using those moves. He had game all the way from the rim out to the perimeter. One of my fave players and very underrated as you said. I actually don't find his Dwayne Wade comparison that ridiculous. Wade had a better career but I'm pretty sure if you switched their teams then Pierce would have been as successful.

I'll be honest, I feel like I've waited my whole life as a Celtics fan for this. Film breakdown of what everyone who watched Pierce play understood, but that I could only ever describe as 'old man game' and 'clutch'. The way he keeps his base, how he's always in a position to gather, always able to put his strength behind a shot if there's contact, able to create just enough space from pretty much any angle - the *skills* he developed after his recovery are all-timer stuff. I've never, ever wanted any player with the game on the line more than Paul. Not any sport.
This is a great video, thank you for it.

Please make more of these old man game videos. Not just with Paul pierce but with other players as well that primarily score off the dribble and not just post ups. I’m a hooper that’s never been athletic. I’ve always analyzed and studied guys in the nba who were good at getting buckets and not the quickest or jumped the highest. Thank you so much for this video. Really made my day.

Awesome description as always, Evin. I 100% agree with you in having respect for his game. A guaranteed bucket of 25+ easy in his heyday, but far from “The Truth” as a talking head for ESPN.
I personally think he’s paid to spew that nonsense to gain ratings. His 🏀 IQ is too high for him to really believe some of the 💩 he says.

Ok now his wide open 3 pointer always looked different than his regular jumpshot... but THIS SHOT WAS LIKE HIS SHOT EXAGGERATED FOR COMEDIC EFFECT.
EXCEPT IT WAS REALLY PAUL THAT DID IT, IT WAS IN A REAL GAME AFTER A COLD ASS PUMP FAKE BTW AND DAT B WENT INNNN

I still truly believe that had the Clippers acquired him instead of the Wizards they would've probably made it to the WCF. That was the only thing those teams were missing a SG/SF who could score especially down the stretch.

    • @EvinGualberto
      @EvinGualberto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah but a meltdown against the Rockets was the only thing that stopped them from making the WCF.
Plus, Golden State had a pretty good record against the Clips that year...they had a pretty good record against just about everyone that year.
I agree with you about them missing that key scoring wing, but that collapse against the Rockets wasn't a lack of scoring. It seemed more mental than anything else.

@@EvinGualberto that's where his experience and leadership would've came into effect. I think he prescence would've help some of the internal problems they were having.

This man whole highlight real is about him doing whatever he wants, whether his moved worker or not. This man pump faked, tried to draw a foul and it didn’t work but still made the 3 🤣🤣🤣
