Promare, Iron Blooded Orphans, and of course Unicorn... The 2010s were kind to mechas in terms of quality, though not quantity. And I'm okay with that.
@@CarronBarboza True, modern anime fans want 5 mediocre Isekai shows per season and that's what sells. There were some fantastic non-mecha shows this decade but they were seldom runaway hits. Standards of Western anime fans have plummeted with its rise in popularity. If mecha becomes the Film Noir of anime, a genre of high quality that doesn't produce many new entries, that's okay. Respect for the profile picture but Promare was so boring I walked out early to catch a bus and Iron Blooded Orphans was so bad it made me go to a shady russian streaming site to try and give G no Reconguista another chance.
I started liking it more when I realized it was actually a Mecha in disguise. It’s still not as good as its popularity merits, the characters are pretty unlikeable and make very random decisions, the writing is quantifiably on the poor side and the generic titans are pretty embarrassing design-wise, but, for what it’s worth, it does have a very unique/interesting plot and strong visuals. It also really seemed to get way better in season 2 when characters got *way* less abrasive and stopped yelling at each other constantly for no reason or just generally being dickish. I chalk the overwhelming popularity up to that line in Jurassic Park “look at all the blood!” People are fascinated with the edginess of it, strung along by the inherent mystery in the plot and mistake that for “good, mature writing” meanwhile it has a near total lack of fanservice so people don’t get insecure and squeamish. It’s a decent show, but much closer to a 6 than a 9.
The fall of mecha is making “mecha” a genre. Mecha is best as a vehicle to tell a story as opposed to just being the story. All of the defining mecha series were about something other than the robots.
There's truth in that, but at the same time, you have to find story concepts that work better using mechs as a plot device than something else. This does naturally set up genre conventions as you need to do things to maintain verisimilitude and ask yourself things like "could I tell this story better using magic instead of mecha?" The problem is more that mecha, as a genre has moved from being like action and fantasy genres and become more like the ecchi genre.
Yeah so what's wrong with modern Mecha? They're far removed from even mentioning how important the Mecha is. Gundam is full of instances where it emphasized the importance of the machine
Gurren Lagann is my top pick for that kind of story. They used mechas as a chrysalis for the characters' development (namely Simon), and it was fucking BADASS.
Yea mecha literally goes with everything, we had mecha romance, high school, western, idols, sports, virtual reality, magic, horror etc., anything can happen.
@Black Chandelier Mirage Of course it's popular in Japan, but my comment was aimed more towards this video rather than making a statement over where something is successful. Also, when a Gundam series is released in the West, it does amazing.
@Waifu Kun gundam has found its prefered gameplay style in the form of the vs series(which, pretty much made the arena fighter sub genre that xenoverse and games of the like used) as well as the tactics with sd gundam and giren's greed(which hopefully have the next ones comeout in the west). all it needs is a good fps/tps. let arc sys develop for other franchises which may make better use like a true high quality jump fighter.

Not so minor when its literally shoved in your face. The grimey and “realistic” aspects of war and politics fit the world of Gundam much better because that is where it began and what developed its legacy and distinction of shows like power rangers and other mecha, video games, toys, and furries are the exact opposite of what the original intended.
In that show you could feel the love of the main character for technology in general and especially for mechs. He achieved every victory because he was dedicated to become as good as possible. Also he never forgot his friends.
@@imnackeredsirnackered948 To be fair it might be possible, but keep in mind that a lot of designs are either stolen from Macross, or licensed from another two classic mecha anime. So that could be a major copyright stumbling block. Never mind that the BattleTech IP's copyrights are a mess. Part of it is owned by Wizards of the Coast, part by Catalyst Game Labs, and part by Microsoft. That's at the very least.
Iron Blooded Orphans was great, especially for someone who has never watched Gundam before. First season is just fantastic. Made me feel sick when Tekkadan was charging across the bridge and getting slaughtered. Even tho they were no-names, their deaths were pretty brutal + being child soldiers made it really gut-wrenching. It hits even harder when you see Shino get demolished by Graze Ein(even tho he ended up living). "The Shoals" and "Funeral Rites" were also a fantastic pair of episodes to end the first half of that season. I think IBO really appeals to western scifi lovers. It's more grounded than other Gundam series in terms of combat and the setting should feel very familiar to any BattleTech/MechWarrior fans. Or if you watch/read The Expanse.

If the mecha are scaled down to human size, does that count at all? Because I see a lot of similar transhuman themes in games like Halo, Crysis and Warframe. From a strictly visual standpoint, TONS of franchises have embraced the concept of power armor (often for the sake of imitating Iron Man and Master Chief).

Portable Awesome It's an Isekai joke, practically there was one popular Isekai in which the protagonist got rolled over by a truck to end the show. It was a shock and an unprecedented approach. And that started a bit of a trend, getting Isekai protagonists killed, bonus points for getting them rolled over by a truck. Over time that became a bit of an inside joke about Isekai. In this context, it means everyone started making Isekai anime.
I disagree with the Iron Blooded Orphans part. It was different from your average Gundam show and more hardcore in a sense. I would always recommend people to watch it regardless of if you're a mecha/Gundam fan or not.
IBO is great, but i think it depends on the type of person, seed is probably the most sure fire way to bring new people, as it was the series that basically revived the franchise from the dead, but instead of either, i would actually point towards thunderbolt(S1). its beyond solid, its incredibly short(making it easy to recomend to people without the commitment) but best of all, it is a great looker, with great soundtrack and characters. after that, like i said, it depends on the person, IBO, SEED, 00 and Zeta are probably the best for begginers(with zeta being really old as a caveat).
@@AssaultRider555 yes and no, yeah its a sequel, but its also standalone enough to not require knowledge to understand. zeta was develop like that on purpose. if you have watched, or know, the original gundam it only enhances the series, but its definitely NOT mandatory. i would even go as far as to say, its more begginer friendly than the original.
@@AssaultRider555 no, it REALLY isnt. alot of people make the mistake of saying "start at the original". dont get me wrong, i love the original, but its NOT begginer friendly, even IF alot of people did start there. from the original big 3, only ZZ requires watching the ealier series, zeta is set 5 years after the original for a reason. the original series did not age well, hell, even when it came out it failed HARD because of how cheaply it was made. and back then, it wasnt that lower than most other mech animes. nowadays? even the original getter aged better.
For millions of years, gods were on vacation until this one fucking planet invented trucks. And then bam, one country just kept sending reincarnated solos after an other to the heavens.
@CooCooWizard No it was not! The entire season 2 of IBO was a giant wreck. Painfully forced plot device(banned weapon that has no reason to be banned), gary stu(mr democracy) enemy that suffers no setbacks, mary sue(you know the pilot im talking about) that suffers no setbacks. Forced "bittersweet" happy ending. Oh everything is better now. Fuck that!
Only one thing sat badly with me at the end of IBO; Rustal Elion not being punished for his crimes I wouldn't have minded him winning if he didn't do 3 things - faked a war crime so he could justify using the rail gun weapons in the fight around earth - denied orga his surrender because he needed to set an example by killing everyone in tekkaden - using the rail guns on the gundams, justifying it as they were demons rather than human. I would of been happier if it came across as a more Pyrrhic victory for him but he actually looks like he ends up with more power, without even having the paranoia of looking for Ride since he looks like he's done after killing Nobliss.
@CooCooWizard IBO is a masterpiece? You have to be kidding. For the first season they can't decide what they want to do with their characters.First, they set up the "revolutionary narrative" - as if Cudelia was some big leader, the mass manifestations turning into bloodbaths, most of elite opposing the liberation of Mars etc. Then it goes nowhere. I watched it a long time ago so I probably messed something up, I could forget something. But 1 season wasn't good and second was bad enough to drop it halfway.
I´m not a life long Gundam fan, as a matter of fact, I haven't watched the "original" timeline series, but I have watched 00, Tekketsu no Orphans, and Seed/Destiny. All of those are self-contained stories and very good by themselves because they still are able to communicate the main message of Gundam: basically, war sucks and there is no evil and good side.

Andrew Keck thats your opinion and actually alot of people enjoy it.
Its got a rating of 9.1 out 10
I started liking it more when I realized it was actually a Mecha in disguise.
Gundam's really just war stories with robots, and Patlabor is a police procedural/slice of life with robots
There's truth in that, but at the same time, you have to find story concepts that work better using mechs as a plot device than something else. This does naturally set up genre conventions as you need to do things to maintain verisimilitude and ask yourself things like "could I tell this story better using magic instead of mecha?"
The problem is more that mecha, as a genre has moved from being like action and fantasy genres and become more like the ecchi genre.
Yet Gundam is still more profitable than even Dragon Ball...
its all because hardcore gunpla fans spending entire salaries on model kits and accessories
@Black Chandelier Mirage Still doesn't change the fact that Gundam is the 15th most profitable franchise in the world right now.
@Black Chandelier Mirage Of course it's popular in Japan, but my comment was aimed more towards this video rather than making a statement over where something is successful.
Also, when a Gundam series is released in the West, it does amazing.
This comment just made me imagine a Gundam Battle Assault revival by Arc System Works.
Any takers?
@Waifu Kun gundam has found its prefered gameplay style in the form of the vs series(which, pretty much made the arena fighter sub genre that xenoverse and games of the like used) as well as the tactics with sd gundam and giren's greed(which hopefully have the next ones comeout in the west).
all it needs is a good fps/tps. let arc sys develop for other franchises which may make better use like a true high quality jump fighter.

It's an Isekai joke, practically there was one popular Isekai in which the protagonist got rolled over by a truck to end the show. It was a shock and an unprecedented approach.

@CooCooWizard IBO is a masterpiece? You have to be kidding. Does 3.0+1.0 have the potential for this though ?
Can it reinvent the genre? I mean it's the end of the rebuild of a series...
@@efhi As long as they explain what the fuck is happening this time there shouldn't be any problems.
2025: *Gigguk makes a sequel to his Evabridged*
I’m not going to get my hopes to high. 3.0 was not very good. I mean I have liked the trailers for 3.0+1.0 so far, but we just can’t really say for sure if it is good or bad.
I know this is late, but it's kinda funny Garnt says his favorite *original* mecha anime of the 2010s was Gridman despite the fact that SSSS.Gridman is a sequel to a tokusatsu series from the 90s.
,,And get's Goblin Slayer'd."
Damn Gigguk. Didn't see that fantasy reference coming in a video about mechas.
"I only watch mecha animes that I've already seen before."
-mecha anime fans of 2019
10:18 "If you're gonna resurrect the old beloved cast to carry the franchise into the future, you're blazing into a problem."
Disney's Star Wars in a nutshell.
So accurate
You think Star Wars is bad about that? Heh, D.C. comics. I rest my case.
Clearly Gigguk doesn't believe in Getter
maybe Gigguk is Dinosaur Empire Spy
