    The climactic “gather all the nations to him” is one of the best Tabernacle Choir moments. Period.

      +Susan Cluff This is the proper way to celebrate Christmas! These days there is too much materialism and distraction to the true and only meaning of Christmas, ie celebrating the birth of our one True God, Jesus Christ!

    1 Angels we have heard on high
    Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
    And the mountains in reply
    Echoing their joyous strains.
    [Chorus]
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.
    2. Shepherds, why this jubilee?
    Why your joyous strains prolong?
    What the gladsome tidings be
    Which inspire your heav’nly song?
    Chorus]
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.
    3. Come to Bethlehem and see
    Him whose birth the angels sing;
    Come, adore on bended knee
    Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
    Chorus]
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.
    Gloria in excelsis Deo.

    I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (December 15), I filled in at a local Presbyterian Church. I played this as the Hymn of Dedication. However, it was to the tune, REGENT SQUARE, composed by Henry Thomas Smart.

    The words are from 'Angels from the Realms of Glory'. The tune is mostly from Angels We Have Heard on High; that's how Mack Wilberg arranged it. Also, this is only part of the full song, which has all four verses of 'Realms of Glory'. This song was shortened in order to fit within the broadcast time of Music and the Spoken Word, since the whole program has to fit under a half hour.

    Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
    Watching o'er your flocks by night,
    God with man is now residing,
    Yonder shines the infant light:
    [Chorus:]
    Gloria in excelsis deo 1
    Gloria in excelsis deo
    Sages, leave your contemplations,
    Brighter visions beam afar;
    Seek the great desire of nations,
    Ye have seen His natal star;
    [Chorus]
    Saints before the altar bending,
    Watching long in hope and fear,
    Suddenly the Lord, descending,
    In His temple shall appear:
    Though an Infant now we view Him,
    He shall fill His Father’s throne,
    Gather all the nations to Him;
    Every knee shall then bow down:
    [Chorus]
    Gloria Deo.

    I have always wished that "the provbial they" would just let him sing in his natural register ... it was his "very clean" looks which gave him the popularity ... He deserves to be respected for his serious musical performance which i truly believe he has. My ears tell me he is a true baritone. Bless him!

    Angels, from the Realms of Glory. . . On Christmas Eve, 1816, the Sheffield Iris contained a fine Christmas poem entitled Angels, from the Realms of glory. The subscribers noted that the author of the poem was James Montgomery, editor of the Iris. They were not surprised that such a fine poem had been penned by the editor of their newspaper, for Montgomery had already distinguished himself as being one of the best sacred poets of England. Lord Byron once described him as being "a man of considerable genius", and Prof. Wilson predicted in the Blackwood's Magazine that his poems would live. Quoting Wilson's statement: "His poetry will live for he has a heart and imagination profound. .. It is as sincere as it is beautiful". That the prediction was well founded, is proved by the fact that over one hundred of Montgomery's hymns are still in use.
    James Montgomery was educated for the ministry, but he resisted the thought of becoming a minister. He drifted into journalism and soon became editor of The Sheffield Iris, a liberal journal. Montgomery was himself a vigorous liberal,being twice imprisoned for his views. In 1789 (the year of the outbreak of the French Revolution) he was sentenced to prison for three months for having printed a poem, The Bastille, surmounted by a woodcut representing Liberty and the British Lion.
    The inspiring melody for Montgomery's Christmas hymn was composed by Henry T. Smart, member of a family which had for three generations been prominent in the musical life of England. It was composed in 1867 during the latter part of his life, when he was so blind that the composition had to be committed to paper through dictation.
    Written by: James Montgomery, 1816
    Composed by: Henry Smart, 1867
    Merry Christmas to All!

      No, it's the song. It's just arranged differently and it starts on the second verse and ends with the third. Still pretty, though. You can always google the lyrics to the song and follow along like I did because I too thought it was Angels We Have Heard on High. They use the UK version and tune.

    • @dwzobell
      @dwzobell 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But the text is the text of "Angels from the Realm of Glory." "Angels from the Realm of Glory set to the melody of Angels We Have Heard on High" is too long of a track title for a CD.

    • @taliaabbott5499
      @taliaabbott5499 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They use a different version. This is what I found when I looked on wikipedia. "Before 1928, the hymn was sung to a variety of tunes, including "Regent Square", "Lewes" by John Randall, and "Wildersmouth" or "Feniton Court" by Edward Hopkins. In the United States, the hymn is today most commonly sung to the tune of "Regent Square" by Henry Smart. In the United Kingdom, however, the hymn came to be sung to the French carol tune "Iris" (Les anges dans nos campagnes, the tune used for "Angels We Have Heard on High") after this setting was published in the Oxford Book of Carols. Sometimes the "Gloria in excelsis Deo" refrain is sung in place of Montgomery's original lyric: "Come and worship Christ the new-born King". On A Christmas Cornucopia, Annie Lennox sings this song but substitutes "Gloria in excelsis Deo" for the "Come and worship Christ the new-born King" refrain." ---In other words, the tune was only set in the 1920s in America and even then, it's different in the UK. They also substitute "Gloria in excelsis Deo" for the chorus/refrain. Apparently, Annie Lennox started this and she seems to be from the UK. Hope this helps and that you can still enjoy the song^^
