You give the Congress critters too much credit. They don't care one bit about national security. I'm 100% convinced they are being bribed, not campaign contributions, I mean straight bribed, to eliminate competition. The US drone makers suck, and instead of not sucking they want to ban the competition. I'd love a US drone, but won't buy one until they don't suck, regardless of what they get banned.

Currently GovTrack gives HR 2468 a 1% chance of making it to legislation. Additionally, every Federal Agency that uses DJI Drones has waivers to use their drones. Includes DOD, DOI, Secret Service. The big impact which has not been realized is the use by 1st Responders, Police, and Small Business's. I know I'm preaching to the choir here - but: If the federal government is so worried about Chinese hacking (which is a legit fear) there are better options than punitive outright bans.
    1. Cell companies like Verizon (who posted a $79B profit last year) could be tasked to improve network security to prevent data theft or whatever they are calling it.
    2. Make DJI (and Autel) sell drones with controllers that don't need to be hooked up to a phone - IE the RC2 - the only reason I ever connect my RC2 to the internet is for firmware updates.
    3. The government could also mandate and fund a US controlled intermediary for flight record data (and whatever other data goes to DJI) - filter out anything potentially harmful.
I'm sure I'm oversimplifying the problem here - but there are ways to prevent spying without banning these products outright.
I've already written to my representatives (twice) and made it clear that if they want to push this ridiculous issue into reality they should also be on the hook to reimburse American consumers for every penny we spent on drones they grounded, not to mention losses to small businesses that rely on this technology.
I also pointed out that when it comes to gun violence certain 'leaders' are very fond of saying 'bans don't work' - but when it comes to drones 'bans are the answer'? I swear, we keep electing dumber and dumber people each election cycle. (I'm not opposed to the 2A - just the hypocrisy of these proposed bans)
Okay - I'm climbing off my angry soap box now .

Russ, great video! I like format change for this, it fits. I too have written my representatives. Our lawmakers plan to make changes like this based on sound bites without any deep dive into the issue to really understand, IS IT AN ISSUE. My complaint to FAA has been the FAA needs to do more to educate lawmakers on drones and the differences between sUAS and larger drones, how drones operate, and how drones are used. I recently talked to a lawmaker in my state about changing a law for registration and the response in part was, "we don't like drones they create dangerous situations. Our drones can collect a lot about flight information, including nice videos and photos but how can that be used for any effective means for china flying since the drone flies at or below 400' agl. Plus we cannot get close enough to US military installations to gather any data. Chinese airlines fly into the US and they would have more ability to capture information about, whatever is on the ground as they fly over. Chinese components as well as total products made in China, are all over. Electronics in our cars, internet routers, lots of security cams made in China, cameras, phones to name only a few. It is absolutely ridiculous to call out DJI drones without calling out the other products previously mentioned. If the FCC, or our lawmakers are so worried about this, the best place to start are internet routers. China already knows a lot about US, through everything we bought, Made in China. So lawmakers, put your DJI red flag back in the closet and send out the real security experts find communication and other vulnerabilities from China.

DJI would just drop the price of their drones to put the comp out of business. It happens back in 2015 with 3DR.. I built a DJI drone back in 2014 when the only way you could get a drone was to build it yourself. When 3DR came out with the Solo in 2015 it was worlds above the DJI ability. DJI dropped the price of the Phantom and put 3DR out of business.

Hello Russ, I am in Ireland, We say here, America gets a cold and Ireland gets the Flu, such is the symbiotic relationship between the two. When USA banned Huawei, so did most of Europe, to such that they cannot be purchased here. So I'm sure the same would follow in DJI's case. But if a customer spends €$£3000 on a DJI Mavic 3 Pro Combo and was legal at the time of Purchase, Then is not the case that, that customer really ethically entitled to fly it for it's life's duration. Eventually that tech will be surpassed in any case and you will buy the next one be it from whoever make the best kit then.

First, I am a (multiple) drone owner. Now, DJI drones connect automatically to the internet any time they are in operation, unlike other companies' drones. Of course the owner can opt out of this feature, but how many know about this, or will take the time to opt out? Therefore, we now have a vast array of drones, all of which are capable of downloading any video or photo taken, along with its GPS location to the internet to be perused by the Chinese. What are the chances that some operators might fly near military installations, or industrial parks, or any other sensitive areas? Pretty good from what I've seen while watching some drone pilots. Yeah, there are lots of other Chinese companies that connect to the internet, but none of them have a ready-made aerial spy fleet operated by a population of unwitting pilots. I, for one, am not going to be ANY help to the Chinese in collecting whatever data they want in my country.

@@willia3r because they have the legal authority to control federal money. They have less if any authority to tell people where they can spend theirs. Also, this bill has been around for years and it always goes nowhere. The reason the other bill passed is because of massive lobbying by Skydio. They moved away from the consumer space and moving into corporate and enterprise. This means potential massive government contracts. They hired a lot of really powerful ex-government people with deep ties within government and congress. This has been known and was the suspected reason for a few years. They have lobbied massively for this and they finally got their way. Skydio have zero interest in the US consumer market, so there is no real effort outside of a handful in congress to go any further.
There is literally no US drone maker of note in the consumer side. What is here is concentrated on the enterprise/government area. There is one company that isn't very good but claim to be American. Their drones are still made in China, it's just they are based in the US.
Again... there is no interest in killing the consumer/pro-sumer drone industry in the US. What has happened is procedure where it will end up on the shelf like the last one.

When a guy in the street unable to offer customers what they need, but he wants all customers not to buy from other people who do provide what customers really need and love to have, then that guy would go to the mafia or the kingpin to pressure or coerce customers never to buy from others so that he could make all the money he thought he has the monopoly on. Yet the truth of the matter is that the guy just wasn't doing his bit to improve his own product. Well, customers are blessed when the glory of the mafia and kingpin shines on them! Skydio is that guy and the mafia is the US government and US congress.

If the supposed threat is data mining, why do we not have a U.S. Certified Safe DJIFly app? I have asked on the DJI Forum as well as sending this suggestion directly to the Government relations department at DJI but to this point nothing but silence.
I totally agree with what you said, there needs to be give and take and I think DJI could go a long way by establishing a U.S. based team that certifies their software or by an American company creating a Litchi or Mavin type alternate client to Fly the DJI products with.
To the point of a U.S. Based drone company... That will be driven by the economy and the market potential for someone to make a profit. I don't think it will take an Elon Musk type investment, but someone will have to come up with several million to do the engineering and initial set-up to get started. Most people are not willing to make that investment unless they can see the actual path to profit model.
I think that trying to regulate your way into a market is the wrong answer. If your going to ban a country's products you have to ban them all or none.

Drones are now an integral part of our way of life. Let's not bury our heads in the sand and wish for some fear-based loss of serenity. With proper legislation, training and support, drones can contribute to a better future.

Stefanik is my "representative", a loosely-applied honorific when it comes to her, and she's been a genuinely awful political opportunist for years, even before she was elected to public office. It's been FIVE YEARS since she held an open meeting with constituents, she has a hilarious habit of taking credit for federal dollars brought into NY21 she voted against, she's directed attacks toward community leaders leading to death threats, and so much more. Unfortunately, she's a lock because of the letter after her name in a +15 district. It's no surprise that she's spearheading this effort with guidance from a slick grifter like Singleton, because it catches eyeballs, sounds pressing, and can be used for political advantage.

They had a golden opportunity to be the American-made leader of consumer drones, but they left us all hanging last year to make more money with government contracts, I hope you are right in that somebody will take DJI's place, I'd love to see a US company like GoPro or even our Canadian Friends at Canon come up with an aerial solution for us filmmakers and consumers that is not sending our information to the PRC, but in the mean time we have to rely on DJI to get our art and work done.

Could it be DJI only, due to their geo-fencing this alerts DJI directly (as you have to get the geo-fence disabled to fly) to when someone is a "sensitive" air zone which then could provide DJI the opportunity to "pick up" information which may be of value to the PRC. Just a thought.

Are you prepared to accept the cost?
It's highly likely that manufacturing your product in the United States will incur higher expenses. Primarily, this is due to labor costs, which have been extensively documented to be significantly lower in countries such as China, Mexico, and elsewhere compared to the United States. Also, the legal requirement for products to bear the 'American made' label is actually non-existent. Despite numerous companies asserting their products are American-made, this doesn't guarantee their manufacturing transpired within the United States. Instead, many companies opt to outsource production to countries offering lower labor costs.

Sadly, our representatives are under educated on the topics (drone and most other things), and more over so in the pockets of companies with the only purpose to make more money, proper and solid decsions are never made. IMO it’s all about greed and nothing more.
DJI is an inovator, it will take years for an american company to meet or exceed not only the technology but the price point. I contacted Skydio for a drone that would fill the needs I have (which are not the highest end) and I could buy 10+ DJI drones for the cost of that one drone, it still could not spec out video and photo as good as my DJI, the form factor was much larger, the necessary equipment was much more costly, and overall a terrible investment for my company at this time. Can you imagine crashing an over $10k drone, when you could be flying a sub $1K drone to do the same work? It would put me out of business.

China did not develop this technology themselves. Long ago, greedy American manufacturers took the technology offshore to use cheap labor to line their pockets.
It has been leading to America becoming a second or third place nation in technology advancement.
We as a nation only worry about cost and will buy whatever is cheaper regardless of where it comes from.
Sadly, for some reason , American drone manufacturers seem to be either unable or unwilling to compete with DJI.
We , as a nation, need to step up and start supporting American companies that manufacture IN America. But, we also need to require they produce the BEST products.
I bought a Mini 3, then a Mini 3Pro because of their capabilities. I fully intended it to be my only drone purchase unless I go commercial.
If there is true concern about National Security then all social media platforms should be removed. There is far more information spred through the Social Media platforms then will ever be broadcast via a drone.

DJI would be wise to move their manufacturing facilities to the US, South Korea, or Japan under the watchful eye of the US and reincorporate in the US where the FCC can insure that there is no feeding of harmful data to China. The US market accounts for 86% of world revenues for DJI, so the sooner they rebrand and come here, the sooner this will all be just a bad memory…
